42yr old man here, who has been a rev head since I was about 14. I've had a vl, ss, xr6t, au ute, etc. By far, the FUNNEST car I've had and nang around in today, is my manual Mazda2. Seriously, so much fun to drive, very spritely, handles very well, runs on an oily rag and super reliable. Fun fact, fold the seats down and you can squeeze 440kg of red gun firewood 😂

Got a 2009 Lancer VRX almost 10 years ago and even though I now have something newer I kept it basically because its a manual and fun to drive. Taken it on interstate road trips including to the NT and WA, fantastic car. But like any of this age it is needing some repairs like engine mounts and a slight leak in the sump which will be dealt with at the next service. But right now I'm in a position of getting them sorted and not just selling it as its only worth about $6k now.

I bought my girlfriend a one owner 2015 Ford Festa 1.5 litre petrol, 5 speed, 5 door in immaculate condition with 125,000 kms on it for $9500. It is an awesome little car. Proper gearbox, proper timing belt (not one of those stupid oil soaked things). It was such a good buy. We are very happy with it.

I’m very happy for you that you found a good one. Most likely because it is a manual! If it had been an automatic that is a totally different story. In almost all of these cases anything under $10k-$12 is always best to buy a manual if know how to drive one. Most of the autos tend to have more issues. I rarely ever see modern manual gearboxes breaking. Other than the typical wear & tare such as clutch & slave cylinder oh & occasionally flywheels.

I bought my first car in November last year, a 2007 Toyota Camry Sportivo with a 5 speed manual gearbox and could not be happier. I paid $5500 for it and it had 190,000kms. I've had no issues with it so far, and installed a reverse camera and new head unit which is pretty easy to do yourself and I highly recommend it. It took me a long time to find one with a manual though, it seems that 99% of 2006+ Camry's are autos unfortunately.

As an owner of the 9th generation Honda Civic, can agree, they are a fabulous motor car, but with one glaring issue, they are only around 45cm high! Though for a young person, no problem at all. Went from the superior civic hatch to a Yaris hatch because it was approximately 40 times more comfortable to get in and out of due to it's higher roof.

I'd argue that the bottom of the market cars shouldn't exist because they are a bad investment. A much better one is to buy the next class up when its 4-5 years old and already has the major depreciation and any build issues sorted out. That next better class of car is still likely to last longer and perform much better (and probably be safer too) than the cheapies. Here in the US, a Corolla, Civic, Kia of some sort or a Sentra 4-5 years old is a smart buy.

I have a 2015 yaris with the 1300 engine. Had it for 3 years. In 2022, drove it from Darwin to Perth, and back to Darwin via SA. 10,000km, not a single issue, average 900km a day (not non stop, was in Perth 6 months). Great car, a little under powered I guess and a bit thirsty, surprisingly. The wife has a 2013 swift from new. Drives fine but has cost thousands of dollars, 2x CV joints, brakes, suspension, too many issues to list, reslly. We both prefer the yaris. And now it's running bad again, techs say it needs a new ABS module and MAF sensor. Est$4,000. Needless to say, it will be going. Oh, and the hatch area is next to useless. NB, years back, I had a 2008 V6 Rav4. Great car. One of the best I've owned. Great power but thirsty.

How is the 2GR-FE less reliable than the 2AZ? 2AZ is famous for burning oil. Also Aurions aren’t that much thirstier than the Camry Petrols, obviously hybrid is more so but out of all the 6s around the Aurion is a gem.
@damilolaakanni
@damilolaakanni 2 ай бұрын
2GR-FE engines are allegedly known for overheating. I've not heard this issue happen to so many people though. Also, it's known to leak oil (plastic oil cooler lines from ~2005- ~2010). After 2010 they switched to metal oil cooler lines, so oil leaks are less common in those years. If you can spend the money, you can buy an older Camry V6 and change the plastic oil cooler lines for the newer metal ones.
@keno88
@keno88 2 ай бұрын
@@damilolaakanni Toyota Australia have been replacing the oil cooler line in the Aurions free of charge. It is a quick fix compared with the 2AZ-FE oil consumption having to use thicker oil to cover up this defect, with the actual fix being piston and ring replacement. Like any VVTI motor regular oil changes are required and those experiencing overheating have been due to lack of maintenance of the cooling system ie. water pump or air in the line. Compared with the 6s it was competing against its a beast in performance and efficiency. Strange it’s super reliable in the Kluger yet to be avoided with the Aurion 🤔

Another thing to consider is what ever your budget is, always try & find something with as many options on it as you can. Don’t just settle for a base spec. One with slightly more kilometres on the clock but a much high spec is always the better deal. Don’t be frightened of higher kilometres as long as it has been well maintained with paperwork to prove it.

Suzuki Jatco CVTs are different from Nissan Jatco CVTs. Jatco is a transmission holding company of the merger of the Suzuki, Nissan, and Mitsubishi transmission development departments. That’s why within Jatco, Nissan Xtronic CVTs were horrendous while Mitsubishi INVECS III CVTs and Suzuki CVTs were basically problem free. Jatco is just the broad company name that builds many types of transmissions for many automakers. Suzuki, Mitsubishi, and Nissan develop their own CVT designs within Jatco. So technically, Nissan’s Jatco CVT failures have nothing to do with Mitsubishi Jatco CVTs or Suzuki Jatco CVTs. Just some tid bit of tribute for you guys.

great video fellas - have this issue on my radar now. Back when I was a kid, your first car was pretty much expected to be a total banger that rarely cost over a grand, no-one cared if bits were hanging off, the tyres were retreads or the last owner drove it through a river. Nowadays, you're considered an irresponsible parent if you let your kid get into anything that doesn't feature (almost) all the latest safety doodads. Which usually means a budget of $15k or over. (For the record, my first car in 1986 was a 1973 Corolla I bought for $50 - from my mum ...)

I have seen too many needing repairs and the prices for parts are ridiculous for a small car. And the boot on them is non existent. Right now, I have my eye on the CRV, RAV4, or CX-5 (2018, 2019, or 2020). I am so excited to discover the perfect option for me!

So, this week: Best first cars... everything Japanese and a couple of Korean cars at a pinch. Next week: Worst first cars..."Come and join as we visit all corners of Europe, the UK, the USA and China to discover why bicycles, trams and trains are what you should be considering if you can't afford a Japanese or maybe, a well serviced Korean car". By the way, I loved your Wipertech commercial. Do we find out next week if they'll remove the tears from the windscreen of a P-plater's used Audi or Mercedes? I'll look forward to finding out. Thanks for the content.

Yep, love my 2020 Ignis to tears. Sits very high, right up there with CX-3s etc. My Ignis is crammed tonight for a 1200km trip. A bit like Tetris, but it fits heaps on the odd occasion you need to max load. Suzuki made it slow & no fun in corners bcoz it wants you to cruise! As an actual car it's unbeatable imho. Great choice.

A well maintained Lexus is a great choice, but please remember that Lexus engines are tuned to run on premium/high octane gas compared to their Toyota siblings. The 3rd generation RX350 is an amazing car if it has been maintained well. Super comfortable with great leather if you can find one that has been babied. My aunt bought a 07 RX 350 new and she has over 200k miles on it with no major issues. She lives in an area with ice and snow but she makes sure the underside is washed after going through salted roads. The Toyota 2GR-FE engine is one of the best and longest running engines ever. They aren't the best on MPG (typically 15-25 mpg depending on the model it's in) and they can be a pain to work on in car platforms originally intended for smaller 4 cylinders. I absolutely adore my 2010 Toyota Avalon Limited. That being said, the engine bay was designed for the Camry's 4 cylinder so the engine doesn't need work very often but when it does it's certainly annoying. The 6 speed is better than the older 5 speed in the 3rd gen Avalons/Camrys which is why I picked a later model 2010 example. Good luck shopping for your first cars!

Not my First car but I got a Pajero NW last year, cost $25k from a dealer, one owner with full service history (which I have all the recites) And apart from some seized suspension bolts which cost too much to replace. Have taken it on an 11k km road trip last year and doing another soon, just ticked over 250k with many more left. Unless daddy is buying this its not a first car. Now back when I got my license it was at 16, by 17y3m I had my full manual license. My first car was a 79 Leyland Moke which cost $1000 back in 1987.

Suzuki Alto is a good car for people who live alone. But when you fill it up with stuff or people it crawls due to the small engine. Mazda 2 is also good but the second generation (DE) from 2007-2014 had a rampant issue of the torsion beam cracking and even snapping in half.

The 10th generation Civics also have a 2.0 N/A 4 cylinder engine, depending on market. If your country gets that engine, that's the one to go for. You'll get the best balance of power, reliability and fuel economy. There's a reason Honda wants to replace the 1.5 turbo in the Civic with a hybrid.

There is plenty of decent cars for cheap. Not all of them need to be from japan like your both suggesting. I know plenty of guys pretty much all of them want Holden commodores and Ford Falcons 😅 and give credit where its due. They can be very reliable. For me my first was a V8 AWD Holden Adventra, i still have it but its not driven as much being that it loves to drink lots of petrol. I have never had any major issues. But now my daily is a Honda Accord Euro which has plenty of potential for a fun sporty car. The decision to buy this was because of the review video that was made on this channel. Definitely a sleeper.
