John Skinner Fishing

John Skinner Fishing

3 жыл бұрын

We covered a lot of water to find a pile of big Summer Flounder! After catching our limit of Fluke to double digit weight on bucktails and Gulp, we switched to wreck fishing to catch codfish on the same gear. We made a long run this trip because the fishing in our usual waters slowed down as sometimes happens in the middle of summer. This video is available in 4K.

Hello John. I have found on occasion that I did hook up more if allowed my rig to scope out a little. I think because it puts the teaser closer to the bottom which might be where the majority of fluke prefer to stay. And why does Rick always look like he wants to high stick the fluke right from the bottom of the ocean and straight into the boat. Looks really awkward sometimes watching him fish.

Great trips like that sure make up for those tough ones! John, I see all you guys use different color combinations to determine what might be the hot color for the day. In your opinion does having different color tandem bucktails/colors of gulp on both the high & low produce better than having uniform colors on both? Does water depth determine the decision in using either or?

What’s your opinion of using live mud minnows / killies as opposed or in conjunction with gulp ? I’m in NJ and it’s out fishing gulp nearly 7:1 minnow to gulp. Granted the larger fluke are typically on 6” gulp w/ buck tail - the raw circle hook with mud minnow is absolutely unstoppable
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 3 жыл бұрын
30 years ago killies were a popular bait for fluke. I doubt you can buy them now, at least on LI. They are not necessary. Any comparisons we've done jigging Gulp against other baits, Gulp won. That said, if you have a convenient free supply of them, they'll catch plenty of fish. I'm glad you use circle hooks. One of the problems with bait is that it gut hooks a lot of fish.

Haven't seen action like that since my block island trip lol. I have a question if Skinner or anybody with anymore knowledge/time on the water a reply would be appreciated. In June I'm mostly fishing tight inshore or off jetties here in NJ. By July I'll still be fishing the jetties or a bit further off the shore by boat. By August I'm fishing the deeper wrecks in 60-90ft with mostly rigs due to depth and scope if I used bucktails. What I've noticed is that the tide matters more the tighter inshore you get but in August when I look deeper in those wrecks the tides seem to have a lesser effect. So I read through the forums and find that current has more effect on fish. I find the direction in which the current moves and won't you know it I find that the currents move water south from RI and MA and LI down through the Raritan even further down south into my neck of the woods off the jersey shore. So my question is if I have a SE wind moving south to north for example going into a current flowing southward does this create an ocean equivalent of wind against tide or does it not matter further offshore. And the opposite scenario as well. What if I have a NE wind flowing from the north in the same way the currents are moving does that create a faster drift making it hard to keep bottom or does it make for a good day? Sorry for the long comment I find myself trying to make fishing as much of a science and study the waters as thoroughly as possible. I'm somewhat new to fishing as I've been fishing seriously for about two years which is nothing compared to most people fishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Wind against current is wind against current regardless of the depth. This results in the worst scoping, even if the boat isn't moving much. A tricky thing about offshore is that sometimes the top and bottom currents move differently. On a trip we did Tuesday there was no wind but we still needed 6 ounces. As we dropped our rigs they initially went under the boat, but then scoped out away from the boat. This was 100 feet.

What a pile of fish ! John . I was curious the recharge juice you speak of for gulp . Is it a certain scent or just generic scent . In relation to the fluke .
