I have NEVER seen such a tutorial as this. Very clear instructions with each step explained. Anyone who knows how to sew doesn’t need to see the instructor sewing. I’m impressed!!!

Hi, One day I was exposed to Covid but I was wearing an N95 and it saved me! I am a traveling nurse and I have traveled to three different hospitals since the epidemic started. I have tried different patterns with Halyard h600 fabric to replace some of the mask because of PPE shortages. Since I have gotten older and husband has pasted and children long gone and grown-up, I put my heart and soul into work. In my younger day, sewing and making my own patterns was a huge past time. But I have long retired my sewing machine that had many miles on it. As soon as the virus hit the United States, I knew what I had to do. So I pulled it out and dusted it off. I made patterns that worked very well but never as good as yours!!! Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to reconstruct this wonderful mask that I can give away to all my fellow nurses far and wide. So well needed. Thank you thank you! Thank you for the pattern it is excellent. I am 87 years old. And my hands are not very good so I allowed a little more seam allowance to make it easier for me . I have almost finished making 4 and am very pleased with the result and as I am not a seamstress I keep on checking the video as I am working . Jenny Wren

Great tutorial. One of the best. Thank you. The only 2 things I will do differently is: Replace the batting with an extra layer of cotton instead, for anyone with asthma. 2. Measure the binding pieces 2.5 x 4 or 5” to create channels so the cord or elastic can be changed as it gets worn, or if the wearer prefers elastic, ribbon or paracord with cord stopper to tie at the back. This allows this great pattern design to become more versatile for people that work in different situations. Thanks again.

This is the easiest to make and most comfortable mask I have found. You can wear the mask and talk without the mask sliding down exposing your nose. It minimizes fogging glasses and is so comfortable my husband said he could wear it all day with no problem. I made these some time ago and I need to make more now. This is the only mask my husband is happy to wear. Does not fog his glasses, no gaps around his face, comfortable. He loves the aluminum for his nose and he can both breathe and speak clearly. We both love that they have filters that are washable with the mask and are made from quality quilting fabric. This is a great pattern. I've made five already and these will replace all my old masks. No more glasses fogging up - I can't believe it! This may be due to the aluminum strips I finally purchased but the pattern is part of it, too. It is so much more comfortable to not have fabric right on my nose and mouth.

I'd like to say thanks so much for this pattern! I made these masks for my husband and myself, and we used them while we were in Seattle last week. (I had surgery at Virginia Mason Hospital there. I was required to wear a mask outside my hospital room, and my husband was required to wear one no matter where he was in the hospital, although the staff was pretty relaxed about whether he wore one 100% of the time when it was just the two of us.) I received compliments on our masks from everyone. I was very happy with the care at VM, and to thank them I will be making more masks (as soon as I can move around a bit better; I currently have an 8-inch scar from just above my belly button just below my breast bone, and am pretty sore!). I appreciate how easy this pattern is -- once I made the first one, successive masks went really quickly. I enjoy seeing them come together so quickly! Again, thanks so much!!

I made one! Such great explanation! This video is one of the best I have seen so far. I made the mask and it came out sooo good. I love how spacious it is between the mouth and the fabric. I can breathe a lot better than the other traditional masks. The traditional ones are almost always touching the mouth and provide no space between the mouth and the fabric. I hand sewed mine since I don't have a sewing machine and I am super happy with the results. I appreciate you taking your time and knowledge and showing us all how to make one of these. Bravo!

These are EXCELLENT masks! I've received spontaneous comments from multiple medical professionals - one was a complete stranger - about the fit and coverage of this mask. I made several during spring & summer 2020, and now it's spring 2021 and I'm creating more. I have made the following modifications: 1) I use non-woven interfacing instead of batting, partially because I had no batting on hand; 2) I changed the straps on some to go around the head (instead of behind the ears) - this is more secure & comfortable for longer term use (work, shopping, school), and doesn't interfere with my glasses. I also like having some around-the-ears masks on hand for quick use, like answering the door. For those who want to double mask, this mask makes an excellent cover mask for disposable masks of all kinds.

I am extremely impressed by how thorough you are in explaining all the steps in making this great mask. When I saw all the details at first, I thought it would be so hard and too many steps......I was wrong. You did a marvelous job!! Thank you so very much.

I have made about 30 of these masks for all my friends, family, and neighbors and everyone loves them. It is so much easier to talk in this mask than most others. No one seems to like the fabric right up against their mouth and this pattern seems to give you just that little extra room to speak and breathe. I did find the batting to be quite heavy and hot, so I substituted batting with a featherweight stabilizer. I wasn't sure how that was going to work out, but it did just fine and still allows the mask to hold its shape, which is great! Many thanks for teaching this tutorial and allowing me to download the pattern for it. So many people are benefiting from your kindness and generosity and I just wanted you to know.

I've made several different masks in lockdown. This one is definitely the best, People love the coverage, the comfort and the style. I have recently discovered that the masks i made for people to help themselves to for a donation to a local hospice, have found their way around the local community and to whole families!! well done Dora Cary!! this is a great design. I've made several different types of masks from KZfaq videos and like how this one is a really good fit, and once familiar with it, it can be done quite quickly in batches. very much appreciate your time and trouble. I'm using Pellon Shir Tailor non-woven fusible interface lining instead of the batting one or two layers depending on how much body you prefer, plus plastic coered metal coffee ties that come with self adhesive on , and i just iron an extra piece of interface over them to give some padding over the nose bridge. I also use a craft bead on the elastic and make it a bit longer at 10" to allow for friends and family to adjust elastic to fit. after our General Practice confirmed today that anyone going for a Doctors' appointment or to collect a prescription of have blood tests etc must wear a mask, it will be very handy to have such a good fitting mask. I have made dozens of these masks for my family and friends. This is the best pattern I have tried over the pandemic. Only change I make is I stitch two pieces of fabric together so that the front and back of the masks are different fabrics and I use a non woven n95 mask like material instead of the batting. My mom hated masks until I made her a set of these to match her wardrobe, thank you so much for this pattern and tutorial!!

I have made a lot of masks but this is my favorite. I've made over 60 so far and give them away. Everyone loves the roominess and comfort of them. I add an extra layer of cotton fabric instead of the batting. I also add a small button hole on the inside to insert the 3.5" aluminum metal strip (which I buy on Amazon) for the nose bridge so the metal strip can be removed before machine washing or if it needs replacing.

I got the 10 mask kit from her and made them for my whole family. I made 2 changes: I use coffee bag ties that I ordered from Amazon for the nose piece so that it is longer. I also use fabric glue to glue the binding on with the elastic rather than stitching the edges just for ease. I can wear these masks all day with a good seal, wear my glasses, wear lipstick without it getting on the mask, and can breathe really well.

I'm a beginning sewer teaching myself as I sew masks. This is the third and most complex mask I've made. That said, even a newbie like me was able to successfully complete this. This is the most comfortable, and well fitting mask. Thank you so very much for the tutorial and pattern! xoxox

Thank you so much for this wonderful video! The way you presented the various steps by telling us what to do next and then holding up the mask with that step already done was so very professional! No wasted time, no confusion--it was absolutely wonderful! I can't wait to try this because not only do my glasses fog up with the mask I currently have, I also feel like I can't get enough oxygen when I breathe. At my doctor's office yesterday, my oxygen saturation level read 97--without a mask it's 99 or 100, proof positive that I really wasn't getting enough oxygen. Again, thank you!

I love this pattern and have been going crazy making these. Everyone loves them! I've found that I can easily get two masks out of a fat quarter, as long as the fabric doesn't have a pattern in the wrong direction. Also, I hate pins and I don't pin at all with this. For the nose, I purchase self-adhesive bridges from Amazon! No pinning! I just chalk the lines around to know where to sew. For the ear loops, I use scotch tape to hold them! No pins! I just love the pattern and how beautiful they turn out. I probably have had the most trouble with the binding, and I think that's just me. Thank you so much!

This is an EXCELLENT tutorial. I am not a super experienced sewer, and I struggle with 3-d spaces. This was the perfect tutorial for my favorite mask.

It has taken DAYS to find a legitimate and useful mask pattern and instructions. No seam down the center...YAY! Thank you so much for your creative and on-point video instruction!

I've now made around 50 of these, and lots more coming! I've made a couple hundred of the 'surgical style' with pleats, but when I saw this video I had to try it! It absolutely fits better. I have a smaller face and make this pattern at 90-95% for me and smaller faces. On the smaller ones, I move the stitching line to 2" down from the top instead of 2.5". The original had the stitching line almost at my mouth and I wanted it closer to my nose tip. I am making them with a filter pocket: I use the front just as Dora has it, but instead of cutting that main piece on a fold, I cut one, plus ¼" seam allowance on top and bottom, and then I cut a 14" x 10" piece of a different fabric for the lining and fold it in half, and cut a 3" piece and fold that in half. The narrow strip (1.5" now folded) is sewn to the bottom of the front piece (3 layers of raw edges with right sides together), and the larger piece (now 7") is sewn to the top. They overlap at the bottom of the mask. This gives me 3 layers of cotton with a pocket for a removable HEPA filter so I don't use the batting. With the stitching line across the front, the mask still holds it shape just fine. (but don't stitch that stitching line through the lining or you won't be able to get a filter into the pocket). You can also make the lining a single layer for the hot weather, but will lose some protection. Also, if your sewing machine can't handle all the layers, a single layer lining might work for you. For me, I find the original pattern pushes down a bit too hard on my nose. With a metal nose bridge it just doesn't need to be that tight. So I adjusted the angle cut out of the top corners leaving the top edge of the mask a ½" longer and this fixed it for me. The final adjustment I have made was to make the binding strips channels so I can run a cord through them instead of the elastic ear loops (ouch). Dora, I can't thank you enough! This is an amazing pattern.

As a health care worker, I love everything about the design except the batting. I wear the thin medical procedural masks for 13 hours, and struggle to breath through them. I can't imaging trying to breathe through the batting. I would like to try this pattern, but will use a very light interfacing instead! I do love this design, and after watching the very well made video, I'm happy to say that the pattern isn't as difficult as the finished product appears. Thank you so much for the free pattern! I love the details on how your instructions gives fabric amount and number of mask, no waste fabric!. Also how to adjust the print settings for a smaller size. Sewing in the nose wire, no fiddling. I have tried other mask patterns, this is NOW my favorite design and construction I did it in 15 minutes!

This was a great tutorial. I made one with bias tape ties instead of elastic. For the nose piece I used the bendy thing off a bag of coffee beans. That worked really well. The extra length of that bendy piece gives a lot of structure to the top half of the mask and keeps it against my face so my glasses don't fog up. I've made one mask and am currently working on a second.

Thank you for the mask video and template! I’ve been making masks for a few months and this is the go to for my work team. It’s breathable and easy to make. My cashiers have to wear them all day and they are the most comfortable for them, for breathing and speaking. I modified it slightly with channels on the ends for the elastic so they can change it out when they need to.

I can't thank you enough for this speaking tutorial! I am a beginner sewer and visually impaired and thought you did a marvelous job and I am more than positive with you beside me and my sewing machine I will be able to get through my first mask! I love the finishing you did with your elastics. I do need a smaller size than normal and am wondering if you have any pattern sizing tips to pass along. My sister made me a couple of smaller masks and my elastic size was 4.25 - 4.5 inches if I remember correctly. These truly are the best and most comfortable masks to wear. And I was told that they do better than the blue pleated masks for protecting yourself and others! You are a wonderful instructor, many thanks again.

I just made six of these masks last night. The only modification I made was to add ties rather tan elastic ear loops. Thank you for the great design. Not only does it wrap around the face for added safety, it does not sit so close to the mouth as to muffle voices like some of the other patterns do. Thank you again for your efforts and design.

Excellent VIDEO...Throughly done and effective teaching tool. My Husband has Breathing problems and the Cotton Sheeting I used to make his masks are difficult to breath thru. The Article shared by a post below from U Chicago was very helpful. I have to sample fabrics again....and then try your mask. One thing I will share with everyone...my Son whom is very critical decided I had to use 2 long pieces of elastic to go around his head and the neck for the best fit for him at work. Often he has goggles on, Hat and with a mask makes a lot to wear for 8-12 hours. He also has trouble breathing thru the Cotton Sheeting that I used. My first masks also had the Nose wire and filter pocket.

This was so easy for me to follow. It looks so complex when finished, but amazingly easy with your style of instruction. And I finished this faster than the pleat style masks I've been making (even though I've been practicing those over the course of 20+ masks). I'm switching all my masks over to this pattern.

Great pattern! It has good face coverage and "seals" well. I can talk while wearing it without it moving around, something I was looking for because I have to teach this fall. I made one small change, however, to make the ear loops adjustable. I attached the top of each ear loop as indicated in the pattern, but left the bottom loose. I then sewed a small piece of elastic with a vertical slit at the bottom corners of the mask to create a "buckle." I cut each ear loop to 10 inches, and then threaded them through the elastic buckle. This allows the wearer to adjust the ear loops for a more individual fit.

I just want to say how much I like this mask. I have tried different ones but I have to say this is the best - the most comfortable by far with lots of breathing room. I will say that I had to adjust the tabs where the elastic is attached. Not everyone like elastic around the ears. But other than that this is a great mask - especially with the 3 layers. Thank you so much!

Just made your mask and it is the best! I’ve made several different types of masks, some are more comfortable than others but yours is the best. I live in Florida and it is hot everywhere you go. It is nice that this mask has room inside so you can talk without your mouth fighting the fabric. Now that they are slowly opening some of the outdoor venues here, we quickly realized that a comfortable, breathable mask is a must. I did eliminate the batting and replaced it with light weight interfacing...because it’s too hot for wearing outside when it’s 90 degrees. Plus we are not wearing them in a hospital setting. Thanks for the free pattern. I’m going to make them for all my family and friends...perfect for wearing to a Disney Park.

This is an amazing pattern. I have made A BUNCH of them over the last couple of months (maybe 200 or so). I have a couple of suggestions. In order to conserve expensive fabric, add a seam allowance at the top of the pattern and cut one of the decorative fabric and one of a tightly woven white or beige fabric then seam them together and press. Quilt backing fabric works beautifully. In addition, I use longer ear loops and use the plastic adjusters that you can find at Amazon or on EBAY. Since I'm really small, I printed the pattern at 85%, and it fits perfectly that way. My husband likes 100% and another friend prefers 90%. I had to experiment with it a bit, but now that sizes are established, everyone gets the size he/she wants. I've been using the stainless nose wires from Advanced Manufacturing because they are indestructable and hold up better than the aluminum (which I couldn't find around here). I have started using Pellon fusible interfacing instead of the batting, and that works too. (Again because when I started out, I was using materials on hand at the time). This pattern is a game changer. It keeps the mask out of your mouth and away from the nose so that it is only minimally uncomfortable. Thank you thank you thank you for this pattern.

Thank you! This is the first mask pattern (we've tried all of them I think!) that is comfortable for my husband with no huge gaps at the top. Also, we already had N95 masks for the extreme pollen here, but they have a vent - these fit over an N95, without crushing. Thank you again and again!

Going to try this mask today! During my mask research, I found a website that tested dozens of materials as mask filters. It ranked the product based on several factors such as protection, breathability, temperture, etc., and ironically, 100+ thread count cotton bed sheets were the best alternative to HEPA material! For disposable filters, good quality paper towels or shop towels ranked best!

I am so glad I found this video. I was getting ready to make an Olson mask, tonight. Decided to do this one instead. Bless you, You are a fantastic instructor, and made this so easy to do. Absolutely fantastic! I used iron-on interfacing rather than quilt batting for my mask and it was a huge success. I'm a teacher and have to talk for hours at a stretch and my standard masks kept getting wet and getting in my mouth. I love how this sits away from my face but still forms a seal around my mouth and nose. I'm off to make more! Thank you for sharing your pattern with us!

thank you for the tutorial... i followed 6 tutorials mask already and this is my favorite fit out of all.

I have been making masks and donating for a while using the surgical style pleats with some modifications (adding tucks under the chin, filter pockets, etc). But now I LOVE the fit of this mask! It really conforms much better to the wearer's face. I have adapted this pattern so the inside lining is a different color and has an overlapping slit for a removable filter (which I believe is more effective than the currently available washable interfacings). And I adapted the finishing binding pieces so I can run a single cord through them - making it more adjustable for different faces and avoiding the painful ear elastic problem. Thank you so much for sharing your pattern, Dora. It's much better than the other "3-D patterns" that are out there! Working on adapting for different sizes now.
