Like most fuel containers today, Rotopax is forced to ship their product with an EPA approved spout. However, is the EPA spout Rotopax uses really the best option? We also take a look at the claim that the Rotopax Vented spout is only for water containers and not for fuel containers. Let's take a look.

20 years ago made a bracket on my motorcycle for an one gallon Acerbis spare fuell can. Those white ones that were originally mounted on the forks at the front of the motorcycle. They came with a very small 30 cm hose connected at the dop. For re-pressuring when the temps change. I have carried it for more then 16 years on several motorcycles. Always made sure i got a Hepco & Becker pannier rack. So i could fit my selfmade bracket to it. And man, they got some beating. And when along with me where it was freezing and to the Middle East where is was 48 degrees Celsius. Guided the pressure adapt hose so it stayed a bit upwards. Worked flawlessly. And then one day i bought Kriega softbags. The sales dude told me about those Rotopax feulcannisters. And i though ok ? They must be very sturdy and well tested. So i bought the one gallon Rotopax. After riding 2 hours i took a break. And then i saw standing next to the bike. While having a smoke. The Rotopax almost came of. It was under a extreme pressure from getting warmer. It looked that it could burst at anytime. So i turned it open to release the pressure. I had to do that constantly. The whole fucking day. After one week it also got leaking. And it became useless on my trip. Stopped with using one liter. So to stop spoiling fuel. Could not completely stop that because going offroad means bumping around. Due to not sealing i did not have to re-pressurise it constantly anymore. But man i became frusstrated about that. And not only that. I needed that extra fuel. In the middle of knowhere even one gallon was not enough spare fuell. Tried several o-rings that i bought here and there but coukd not find anything with a good fit. A few months later back home i did throw it away and also the mounting. Went in the shack and created myself a new bracket. But this time made a bracket so i could carry two Acerbis One Gallon cannisters next to each other. And as before they did their job perfectly. They are white colored. So as cool as possible in the sun. I think you can not buy such Acerbis cannister anymore. Luckily 20 years ago i bought two of them secondhand. More then enough because i know that they will never break or burst. Completely indestructible. Having spare fuel gives me a reasured feeling while riding in a remote place. But those cannisters have to be incredible sturdy because they have to endure a lot. This will be no different when using them with Jeep i think. It still baffles me that a manyfacturer sell such crap. So i know what you feel sir. I got even baffled more. I did go to the Acerbis site and searched for it. They still sell them !!🙈🙈 And the even got a 5 liter option !!! Please beleive me. They are really indestructable. They will never leak or burst.

FYI fuel cans in Australia are generally sold with only the self-venting "water spout" 🙂

I tossed the spout, kept the plug and just carry and old water bottle that I cut the top off of and use it as a funnel. If it breaks I grab another from the side of the road. Great video though!

It’s not just for water tank, as all the older tanks (no more than 6 yrs old). For context I live in Canada.

@@EmbarkWithMark I see a lot of bad reviews on Amazon on the seals on the yellow ones going bad and leaking but I think I’ll still get one and give it a try and maybe just don’t store it in the can just get one and use them for all three of my cans. Install when gasing up.

The rotopax water spout or the yellow spout is slightly smaller diameter than the fuel pack themselves making them prone to leaking and ripping gaskets if not properly centered and tightened down too hard.

I’m going to try the one from Tractor Supply. I bought the vented one from rotopax, but it leaks big time. The one that came with my rotopax sucks! I hate ALL EPA style vents. Seems like they never work and you end up spilling gas all over the place. Thanks for the tip Mark…
@EmbarkWithMark

I could not have said it better myself. The only EPA spout I kind of like is the one from the Midwest can. But that is only because it's tolerable. Most EPA style spouts are just awful. Glad you found the video useful!

The stock fuel spots from rotopax are awful. I use them as back up fuel. I pull them off and cylcle the fuel 5-6x a year. Every 45-60 days. We should😅not need to practice on using a fuel spout. Anyone claiming they have no issues is not being honest or must interact with them on a weekly basis.

On the Tractor Supply spout I think you can just remove the red button and it will still work, which saves you from having to use only one hand to pour.

I don’t get it. The yellow self venting cap was apparently designed for water. It has a vent and rubber seal. If it works for water and seals, then why wouldn’t you use it on the fuel can. Seems like there’s a lot of over thinking put into this. Phew!!!

My application is on my KTM 1290 motorcycle. Therefore, a fixed spout is really a detriment because one is filling a horizontal fuel tank opening. So a flexible spout would help prevent spilling fuel all over the tank. The no vent situation wouldn't be so great however. Still looking! Did you do any poor tests to see how long it takes to empty contents of the Rotopax? It seems like the stock spout would take forever and a day.
@EmbarkWithMark
@EmbarkWithMark 2 жыл бұрын
I could see a fixed spout on any bike being a bad solution. I've used these enough tot ell you that the stock spout is indeed very slow. Painfully slow. However, I should do a pour test, so we can see just how faster, or slow, these things flow. Great idea, thank you!

I just got a 3 gallon Rotopax and bought their yellow spout. What a joke. My can has filter/screen in it that is too shallow. So I cut about 3" off the end to get it to fit. Problem, that sides of that screen are tapered so the more you push to get the spout in, the harder it is. Which makes it VERY tough to get out. Basically flushed away the $$$ for that useless spout.
@EmbarkWithMark

That sounds new. None of my rotopax have a screen in the tank. Strange.

@EmbarkWithMark My fuel rotopax came with the screen also. Its some sort of government mandated flame guard. Unfortunately, as it stands, the screen prevents me from keeping the can mounted and using a siphon hose directly to the fuel tank.

Spout design is for epa and dot fuel transportation laws. Wondering what the fine is on highway and blm land violations? Especially during fire bans transporting fuel in an improper container…. Federal fines are usually triple the amount of usual road infractions! Be careful with the advice you share.
