We used pedals back in the 80s like delay echo reverb and even a sampling pedal along with the Dr Rhythm drum machine. Malo and IAmSight have taken the pedals to the next level

I do a similar thing with the Rytm and an OTO boum. The Rytm has really good analog compression and distortion out of the mains but I can split the low end parts out separate and process in the Boum. It's an amazing sound. I also agree with printing the reverb and delays from a pedal or from the Rytm in my case, since I can control the Rytm Fx in the parameter locks and thats super powerful imo. Its like the basic track is done in a standalone box and I love that. Keeps things simple for my mind.

23:51 same same! This whole video was something else. Its kinda like it brought peace even though i may not understand or what pedals is as much as you guys but just the conversation and topics you guys touched base was like a healthy meal for me. Yea its nice watching videos of you guys sampling a sound and or making a beat but its also nice just listening to topics about music just like this video. My respect to you both💯 im now gonna do more research on pedals😅😂

Yo this was a dope video! So happy to see other people embracing the MPC Live 2. I love mine, and its totally changed my workflow for the better! However I wanna say that having an outboard mixer to control pedal sends and returns / EQ can be super helpful. My current setup is that my MPC controls all the midi timing including Ableton and then I use Ableton to do in the box effects or route out per channel to my outboard gear when jamming. Then I flip things around once ive found a loop by recording through the board intro Ableton. From there I arrange and do effects / additions in Ableton. The hub of the whole scenario is a 90's Mackie board and I love the EQs because it can make anything sound phat, besides glueing the instruments together.

What an inspiring conversation! Always nice to see producers interact with each other, since it adds so many side-topics which probably wouldn't come up otherwise. I began with FX, and pedals in particular, fairly recently, and thus started with quite a basic but extensive digital MultiFX pedal (compressor, distortion, amp sim, cab sim, EQ, modulation, delay, reverb). Not aiming at using it in a high-end production (as, of course, the individual FX in a MultiFX aren't _that_ high-end), but rather to get a general feeling for which kind of FX I might eventually go for in a more high-class / stand-alone version. Anyways, based on my limited experience, I just have to agree that pedals add so many sound texturing abilities without the rabbit hole of a DAW.

Lumidee ‘Uh Oh’ - YES this groove! Re: video topic, feeling this discussion a lot. Shifting into production from DJing, I have my MPC One permanently connected to an Allen & Heath Xone 96. 6 outs with analog EQs, 2 flexible filters w distortion and they sound SO buttery. Def makes my drums knock way harder. It’s so easy to mix as you go, and even perform the track, bringing elements in/out live using faders etc. It’s an expensive unit though, probably tough to justify just for production. In combo with the Analog Heat mk2, this is enough sound design to keep me occupied for a while :)

I’ve been getting really into guitar pedals with my MPC Live as well. I recently got an SSL Big Six and it’s “forced” me into controller mode - outboard sources just sound so much better tracked through its converters. Plus it gives me a few compressors to play with (if anyone has suggestions for the LMC let me know, I haven’t used it yet!). Gives me some mono channels, stereo channels and a nice clean analog chain. I also have a reamp box to do some parallel processing with my pedals and it gives me more headroom (or at least that’s what I perceive based on my experience running pedals w/ line level sources)

Empress Zoia! Essentially you can craft or download nearly anything you can dream up it is essentially a modular setup in pedal form also it can either be 2 mono inputs or stereo, same on the way out. and also can be controlled by midi or cv and has midi in and out it can also be made into a sequencer sampler looper synth with a ton of utility and effects… pretty much modular setups are how all pedals are made so you can combine multiple custom effects to create new pedals that haven’t been done… it’s really amazing. Multiple versions of of empresses reverbs delays distortions oscillation granular you name it! Look into it for real.

Great way to jump straight into the conversation..... I can't say I've got a extensive background in mixing but I definitely understand how it can take away from the creative process and get you stuck in another realm... Even using the MPCX in controller mode and constantly getting vsts (free ones especially) .... Sometimes I feel like it sucks the life out of my music.,. Sometimes. Lol Good sh*t though..!

Funnily enough I entered the beat making world after be in bands for decades so I had already had an extensive array of pedals and first starting using them with my MPC 1000 which is amazing. I feel there was a perceived division between the band and production worlds and along with gatekeeping from the band side which is now dissolving thanks to open minded people like yourself and Malo Beats. Pedals are tangible and are not going to disappear if you forget a product code, they are also very immediate workflow wise, saying that I do like to automate my plug ins during mixing in Ableton. Some to look into for reverb especially is the Source Audio “True Spring” or my favorite the Surry Bear Reverb which had a real spring, works best parallel but gets and amazing nasty distortion when you saturate to signal going straight in, Strymon “El Capistan” is excellent with delay, reverb, wow-flutter and drive.

If we're talking distortion, the gnarliest is Liverpool Pedals Hungry Beaver, and for a distortion with bonkers envelope following its gotta be the Montreal Assembly PURPLL. For stereo 'making everything sound better' tho, its the Neon Egg Planetarium 2 - a chorus and reverb feeding into a delay which then feeds into a compressor with external sidechain in and thru... Its beautiful, makes everything sound amazingly wiiiiiiiiide.
@tb80038
@tb80038 2 жыл бұрын
For delay check out the new Boss Space Echo RE-202, Strymon Volante or delay/verb the Specular Tempus by GFI System. For straight reverb the Empress Reverb is the top of the list for sure.

I'm surprised you say that the MPC's Air Reverb sounds good. It's the Achilles heel of the MPC to me and the reason why I'm so easily dazzled by other synths. Really, the synth plug-ins all sound great, but the reverb is lackluster. If they fix that, I would have a lot more fun on the MPC. My workaround is to use the MPC in controller mode and replacing the reverbs with Valhalla SuperMassive when in the final stages of mixing.

most people who learn an instrument or beatmaking reach a point where they get frustrated about their sound, and that point is where they know their skills and instrument isn't the issue. enters the world of mixing, mastering, room treatment, which is indeed infinite... and one can easily loose themselves in that world and stop really making music. Entering that world comes with using alot FX, and realizing that a little goes a long way, and that comp and eq are core things, and (wrongfully) think that phasers and flangers or other effects aren't good things anymore thus looking down on limited guitar pedals... "if a simple SSL buss comp cost a couple grands, how could a pedal worth barely 100$ help with a mix?" is the thought, mostly. But they're wrong, of course
