Hey guys this is Matt Tolbers! In this video I review what I think is one of the best garage or shop heaters you can buy for the price! The garage heater I have and review is the Mr Heater Big Maxx. This natural gas heater which can also be used with propane will heat up almost any garage, shop or workshop with ease whether you have insulation or not. The Mr Heater Big Maxx currently comes in three different BTU size, 50000, 80000 and 125000. The main competitor to this garage heater is the Modine Hot Dawg workshop heater. From research they seem very similar in parts used and warranty so not sure why someone would go with the Modine Hot Dawg over the Mr. Heater Big Maxx but that's up to you.
I also mention why I choose a forced air natural gas heater over an electric heater or an infrared heater. Electric heaters don't need an exhaust, but most require a 240v electrical outlet and can cost alot to run compared to natural gas. Infrared heaters also knows as radiant heaters can work well for certain people and situations, especially if you work directly under them. Radiant heaters take longer to warm the air because it first warms the ground and objects before they warm the air. As I stated in video I just leave my forced air heater on 24/7 because it runs so cheap that everything just stays warm.
Thanks for watching guys! If this helped you please leave a like, and consider subscribing for more home gym equipment reviews!

doug robertson, I had the same problem (frequent cycling). It turned out to be the heat anticipator in my very old 1980s mercury thermostat. It has a little sliding rotary adjustment that makes it come on longer or shorter cycles. There's more to it than that but just adjusting it fixed my problem.

If you ever have any trouble, first check the pressure switch, clean the hose and then at the exhaust motor port. It will plug up so run a drill bit or paper clip through to clean the port. If its plugged it won't close the pressure switch allowing the furnace to run. This seems to be a pretty common issue. I also just had to clean the flame sensor due to cutting out as soon as the ignitor stops clicking. I love my 80K Big Maxx

Nice job, everything looks well done and you didn't skimp on anything. The one things I would say that you should take care of is adding a drip leg to the gas line and the vent 9:44 termination must be a minimum of 4’ below or 4’ horizontally from any soffit vent or under-eave vent.

Did it all myself. My biggest pain in the ass is there are no videos to speak of about the wall thimble installations. But the rest of it was pretty straight forward. I did the hard line in the garage and CSST from the house out to the garage. Also on my plug in switch I installed a plug in ran by a switch. Because when heater isn’t running there is power being used at least I hear a humming from the heater. Plus that is a smaller garage. Is that a single stall garage?

Hey Matt merry Christmas, thanks for good detailed down to earth review. so it says minimum clearance from bottom of unit to floor is 8' I see yours isn't does that effect anything that you noticed? or is that more for safety so you don't hit things on it? i currently have an electric one and its not big enough and its expensive to run. anyways thanks for answering my questions when you do.
@MattTolbers
@MattTolbers 3 жыл бұрын
Hey David, Merry Christmas! I have mine at 7' and doesn't effect anything negatively. The height is just so you don't hit anything on it like a vehicle. Works amazing at heating the whole garage for cheap
@markbrinton6790
@markbrinton6790 2 жыл бұрын
@@MattTolbers wrong, the height requirement is to avoid combustible fumes which can settle on the floor level. I'm sure you're setup is just fine, but that is why any of these types of heaters mandate being up that high off the floor. Many garages and shops store things like gas cans, paint thinner, oil based paint, etc, which can produce these flammable fumes. Also, that first noise at startup is the exhaust fan clearing the vent pipe before it fires up. Lastly, that is a sweet heater you got. I had to go with a 7,500 watt electric because I don't have a natural gas line. Cheers.

Pretty good installation overall. The stack installation & gas piping looks better than most I see on KZfaq. And interesting technique of spiralling the cords around the allthread mounting, I wouldn't recommend it though. Hopefully any vibration won't wear thru the insulation. Probably would have been better to lightly zip tie them instead. Isn't there supposed to be a drip leg on the unit gas connector? It keeps moisture out of your gas valve, which is not good, especially with the line coming from above, no where to go. Was this inspected & passed?

Great video. I just installed one my self. I just want to verify something. Is it normal to experience the flames cycling on and off on a regular interval as the heat cycle is running?
@MattTolbers
@MattTolbers 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, you should hear it spark once to get the flames going but after that it should just keep running without resparking until it heats the room up to the temp you set on the thermostat. Then it will shut off until the temp drop a couple of degrees below your set temp and it will do it again. If it has to keep re sparking while running sounds like the natural gas isn't flowing like it should and loosing the flame.

@@MattTolbers My heating contractor is baffled. Everything checks out and there is no error codes, but the flames turn off for 30 seconds or so and then relight. The fan never shuts off and the cycle continues until the tstat stop calling for heat, and everything shuts down normally. The contractor is pretty sure the control board is bad some how. High limit sensor and flame sensor check out as normal.

A new digital house thermostat caused me a similar problem. it cycled frequently even with air conditioner in the summer. Turns out there was a non-adjustable setting called "span" which basically made it come on at 71.9 degrees and turn off at 72.1 degrees. (permanently set to 0.2 degree span). I bought a different thermostat and set it for 3° span and everything works normal. 20 minute cycle on typically. Also with my Big Maxx heater, I had the same problem at first. Problem turned out to be the old 1980s non-digital thermostat I was using. There's an adjustment for longer or shorter cycles on the inside, looks like a second thermostat. Adjusting that fixed my problem.

I went through 2 fan blades on that heater, they end up making alot of noise anyone else have those issues?

Dang bro sorry to hear that. Seems like the fan would be pretty easy to replace. I’ve run mine a ton in three winters I’ve had it and no issues yet.

Modine hot dawg is a better heater, thicker heat exchanger. Where is the wall thimble for the exhaust. Definitely not installed to code.

Yeah it has to be a little different for the much in price, but not worth it for most people when this works perfect for half the price. What’s awesome is I’ll be a pro on code after this video lol. Thanks for watching Dean

I can tell you your exhaust is wrong. You could get carbon monoxide that way. Heat/ exhaust fumes rise… just so you know and to be safe

It’s a forced exhaust heater, if it wasn’t then yes you would be correct.

I disagree I have a 35,000 btu and I am waiting for a control board for the second time in 5 years. That and all the other issues I’ve seen guys have online. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

That gas line is not even close to code.

I had it installed by the professionals when they built the house, but doesn’t surprise me. Not sure if code is different depending where you live. Either way I’ll get it up to code
