Hello Tony. Just an idea that I use in my garden and I absolutely love them... I use old window blinds, the metal or plastic ones work equally well. You can write on them with a permanent marker which you can wash off at the end of the season so you can re - use them the following year. I cut them into 8 or 9 inch lengths with a point on one end. They seem to stand up to all kinds of weather. Now, I am sorry, I misunderstood what you were looking for, I thought you were talking about the actual "stake" marker. So, I use a sharpie for marking the short term crops. They usually last as long as needed, but for crops that last all season I have used childrens wax crayons, or, here in Canada, we have a marker that farmers use to mark their animal coats for identification, I think they are also wax based. We get them from any farm feed store or similar. Not sure if this has been any help to you. Take care and stay safe, Sandie from Ontario Canada. PS, I have used the printable labels in the past and really didn't care for them. Too small, too fiddly and not biodegradable.

Great video again Tony. I number my seed packets. If they are tomatoes1, 2,3 etc. If it is brassicas 1,2,3 etc. Repeating for squashes and root crops. I can tell the difference between a tomato and a brassica which I am sure every one else can. I then take a photo using my phone of each packet. It then means I can carry the details with me. I then number my seed trays and plant pots. Starting from 1 every time means I can use the same pots as the season goes on. If you want you can then number your label accordingly and when you put the plants in and photo the label, you then have date and time which also means you have a record of the current and eventually the previous year’s planting. I hope this makes sense. The marker pen i use is 5* office. Cheers Martin

Hi Tony, I use a Chinagraph pencil. I'm ex F.R.S and we used these pencils in all weathers and they work very well on shinny surfaces (i.e plastic labels). The only draw backs are keeping it sharp, and cleaning the labels after use.

Hey Tony, after 30+ years of gardening, I am finally happy with my outdoor plant labeling! Wooden paint stir sticks written on with black paint pens. No fade all season. They look so good that for varieties I grow every year I should get several seasons out of them.

Great video and review of plant markers. I use wooden plant labels and a pencil which is my preference because the labels can decompose into the soil if they break and provide the soil with nutrients.

Hi Tony, I use a Brother label maker which does a partial cut as well as a complete cut, so you have a peal able tab. As you say laborious for annuals but a plannt collection of shrubs, brilliant. I hang the labels on the branches, just have to re tie and move the label up the plant as it grows. I colour code the plants with different coloured labels, according to hardiness, so I can take cuttings, or bring them in if in pots, should frost and snow be forcast. Veg labels, prefer pencils, I'll have to buy some 4Bs. At plant shows, black labels and white ink is eye catching and lasts from show to show. Entertaining as ever.

Hi Tony. Like you, I tried many things before I finally got fed up and went to the hardware store and got a paint pen. It's a little pricey but has lasted for 3 years so far. It still writes clear and strong so I guess it will last for another few years so well worth the money. It writes on anything and lasts the whole season, rain and sunshine.

I have been using a Sharpie on my labels with no problems. As a matter of fact, they can be buried in the dirt and when I find them later, they are still quite legible. Knowing myself however, I sometimes forget the markers on certain plantings. I keep a gardening journal that I make my notes in - date, plot number, what occurred (planting weeding, harvesting, etc.). It works fairly well for me.

Thanks Tony for this video- I’ve been hoping you’d do one like this. I agree with you about the label maker tape- I use mine only on my permanent plants and they last years. I’m going to try your pencil idea, I’m thinking the co op store sells those kinds for builders. Thanks for the good ideas.👍

The pencil always was the best for writing on labels, but in the last few years most labels have changed. Seed labels used to have one rough and one smooth side and pencils wrote so well on the rough side, and I could just scrub them all end of season to re use. Now most labels are super shiny as far as I can find, especially as I use so many and therefore buy in bulk. I use a Sharpie as they work for me indoors labeling seeds and small plants and although I do put the plant label in the soil outside at planting time I rarely reference to them because I know what a cabbage looks like. If I could find a supplier that still makes the seed labels of a few years ago and sold in bulk (rough and smooth sides) I would buy some and use pencils again...Steve...👍😃

I like the black T labels and the white twisting plastic (not the peeling paper) Grease pens. I also like to use flat black spray paint (to look like a chalkboard paint) on paint sticks to make larger markers and the white grease pen or a paint pen.

Bought a cheap pack of labels from Wilko which came with a pencil. Brilliant. Write the label at home and put with the seed packet so no worries about damp hands. Gave up using them outside other than pots as most disappeared. Now write in a notebook which is great for reference. Cut up margarine pots make good labels and pencil doesn't fade on them.

Hi Tony, I’ve used OHP (overhead projector) pens they seem to be more resistant to the UV light and they are fine pointed too! . Also the medium seems to have an effect on the longevity of the inks. What works quite well is writing onto Vinyl labels and sticking them on to the angle T head labels and that works well too - they are pretty cheap to buy off eBay and come in a range of sizes. Thermal transfer printers are the way forward but unfortunately the cost of a set up is too expensive for most. My set up about 6 years ago was well over £1800.00 for the printer, software and the consumables etc. It is by far the best for smaller runs of labels without having to buy labels in from floramedja etc. A bit cheaper option is laserplas labels For printing half decent semi professional labels at home on a laser printer but it takes ages to get the label set up on a word document and creating a template for them, but they do work extremely well. If you want any advice about plant labelling Tony give me a shout as I’ve been down this route and researched the hell out of it and in the process I’ve spent a small fortune and I could pass on some advice if you want. John

I use all kinds. Thin, cheapie yellow plastic labels with a sharpie last me several seasons for things i plant every year. Thicker white labels with a rough side work with a pencil and are easily cleaned and last forever. I also use wooden coffee stirrers and an ultra fine sharpie. They're narrow so neat penmanship helps. The ink soaks into the wood and lasts all season and they compost. You can't read them at a distance. Popsicle sticks work as well but the stirrers are $12US for 1,000. Mostly I use a spreadsheet. I adjusted the cells in Excel to be squares, mapped out my raised beds with each square at 6", drew the boxes and I fill them in each spring. The layout only needs to be done once. My garden is at home so I'm 100' from it so it's easy to adjust on the fly. I've made expanded boxes for my more intensely planted beds so it's legible. It's fiddly at first but once it's done it's easy to fill. It also has the advantage to save each layout year to year. We're under snow for 3 months and it (mostly) keeps me out of trouble. That being said, I plant entirely too closely, don't prune or tie up plants as I should so by this time of year I need a machete to get through the tomatoes so reading a label is not possible, and there are always a few mystery trips in there anyway. Love my jungle.

Sharpies, or more like the Target store brand permanent marker, has worked great for me. Rarely do the fade. At the end of growing seasons I sort the labels by plant type and reuse them next time, with the same writing on them. I live in one of the rainiest cities in the US. Just like you I have tried everything, not just how I write the label but the label itself. Plastic, bamboo, wooden, copper.... tried all the labels and sadly I find the plastic ones are the best, my only redemption for using plastic is I do keep them, clean them, and reuse them.. writing the labels I also have tried everything, eventually settled on a “pencil”. I use the builders pencils as I find they are the right softness and just work first time every time.

Dawn Garlick I have always used hand gel the alcohol just wipes any writing off. Same for when I used various markers. I really wish I could find an alternative to plastic plant markers but I literally have tried everything, the bamboo ones were okay but the weather takes its toil and they ended up in recycling. So you have to question the need to replace them each year or so against reusing the plastic ones for a couple of years.

@@debrariley2057 Thank you for your comments, that is really helpful. I purchased some of the plastic strip markers (last year) that Tony shows in this video and they have perished and cracked apart already, so definitely not good quality ones. I inherited several old coloured plastic markers in the greenhouse on our allotment, and they must be years old, but are as sturdy as anything. If only knew where they were bought from...... We have also repurposed a (large lancashire) yoghurt pot to use as markers, they did keep the marker pen on, but not very solid if putting in the ground, only in pots.

Once the label has been printed give it a little fold enough to split the sticky part, then peel from the middle not the ends??? Another way if you want to write them out, do it before you go to the allotment that way you just put them in the ground and you are done. Try writing on lolly pop sticks or better still wooden paint stirrers which are wider than lolly pop sticks. Stay Safe, Barry (Wirral)

Hi Tony, I have been using pencils for the past 40 years. I have always used HB pencils, being a good middle ground between hard and soft lead. The 'standard' pencil works fine on all plastic labels, even the modern shiny modern offerings. I recently bought a pack of pencils from Home Bargains under the Staedtler brand. I have always bought branded pencils for this use as the cheaper ones can vary so much in quality. These pencils are labelled "170 HB2" and are plain yellow in colour. They are useless! It turns out that the lead is "super-bonded" (whatever that means) and gives it a soft feel to write with. It also skids over the smooth plastic surface of modern labels. Further investigation resulted in discovering Steadler produce another version of pencil marketed as the 'tradition' range (Coloured black and red) these have what feel like 'standard' graphite lead and work well on all my labels, including the shiny plastic ones. On another note, I find the modern cheap labels go brittle in sunlight very quickly. Mine have become brittle from using them from new this season... I need to investigate further. Do you find yours are doing the same? Ralph.

I've been using pencils for years, just wash the soil off and use a rubber to get rid of pencil marks. I just have to remember to do it before I need them again.😄

Does the rubber work better than using scourer,? will have to try... 😁 Sometimes I wonder....!!! Why didn't I try that way before.

I always use pencil and when I want to use again I use a washing up sponge with the rough side just dampened and it scrubs off perfectly

I do as well but it seems to take a lot of elbow work and not always clear after 🤔 do you use anything else with the scourer?

@@dawngarlick7926 A little bit of cream cleaner, the sort you use on saucepans work wonders and removes the pencil in no time.

Vikki Elliott Yes I have used cream cleaner if it's being stubborn but generally the rough sponge is enough after the label has been in the ground

Very late to this conversation! I know I've tried Sharpie (R) markers and I've tried "china markers" which are a wax-based product---I think that they are, anyway. Neither of those lasts in the weather no matter what the weather is and the "china marker" which is such a bear to get off china or clothing didn't last as long out of doors as the Sharpie did: honest-to-goodness, less than one week before it was *gone.* Some thought has been given to making "generic" markers, e.g., broccoli, kale, collards, beetroot and perhaps some additional identifying information such as broccoli, Waltham; kale, Premier; collards,GA Southern (or, "Creole"); beetroot, Golden, only making them out of lightweight material such as soda *cans,* which means essentially embossing the information onto the label (which is supposed to be shaped, first, into a pleasing oblong or "oval" which won't be a true oval but that's all right.) Problem as I see it: you don't get to put a date on these labels unless you want to be making labels every season or every succession sowing and only whatever you grow regularly seems worth the trouble of making these---and they do take some time, each. On the plus side, they don't fade in the sun or wash out in the rain or wind so they seem to have some merit. I've tried maps of the garden, with crops numbered in their locations, and a key each year so I know what is what---in theory. *Mostly* I've relied on recall, knowing I planted cavolo nero *here* and recognizing it once it gets a few true leaves, or that I put in "Crapaudine" beetroot *there,* ditto, and so on. Haven't yet tried a 4B pencil, but I'll be searching one out this week. If they're successful, I'll be searching out a packet. Thanks for that suggestion!😊

I use wide lolly sticks you can get 200 for like £3 and if I forget it then it’s fine there wood and that will rot with seeds I use a coffee stick like you get in posh coffee shops there free 😊 and for a pen you can’t beet a label marker like the ones you name up the kids uniform it soaks in the wood so stays there for the session or harvest

I cut up used milk bottles for free labels and then use a permanent marker to write on them, they work fine, I make them big so that I can write all the information on that I need, they don’t cost a penny and when I’m done they go into the recycle bin

Paul I also use recycled plastic bottles but I do find the window blinds have worked the best for me. I usually write on them with a "Sharpie" which lasts all season and is no problem to wash off for the next year. When they are no longer useful, like you I can pop them in the recycle bin. I am not trying to promote plastic use in the garden, however, the.y would be going in the recycle anyway , so we are just putting that day off to another time haha. Take care

Label maker :) And you can stick them all over the house like a nutter. Seriously though mine is great and probably cheaper than the total amount I've spent on crap marker pens that fade.
