Taking a box-stock Losi 22S No Prep Drag Car - what gearing works the best for the car?
I bought a whole slew of pinions (from stock all the way up through 39T!), plus a smaller spur gear just to see what would happen.
As I stepped up in gearing, the performance changed for sure...but it is possible to go too far on the stock electronics. Overheating and cogging quickly become a factor. To improve this, new electronics would certainly be required.
Test pinions:
- group 1: amzn.to/3ijIB3F
- group 2: amzn.to/3ihvekw
Losi 76T spur gear: amzn.to/3hL92zU
Have you been testing gearing on your Losi 22S? Where have you ended up at, and at what speeds?

I learn this from others youtubers, the higher the gear ratio you force the motor and esc to heat more faster, put more stress and heat, to prevent that you need a much better esc can handle the tires size and gear ratio

At my local track with Porta Tree timing system, regeared 22S Drag cars with legal (2S) batteries typically run low 2.7's, high 2.6's around 48 mph. Chasing gearing with the GNSS is difficult because of their accuracy. It's also been my experience that to find the absolute best gearing for a particular car/motor, you need to let the motor completely cool and use a fresh off the charger batter each time. Otherwise, you're gonna find on subsequent passes that it losses a tenth or more after the initial run with the "perfect" gearing.
@RoadsideRC
@RoadsideRC 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips! I did fully charge the battery between runs, and gave the motor/esc around 5-10min to cool. Still not completely cool by any chance - especially with how hot it was. Folks seem to continue to talk about these mid-2 second runs with this car, and for some reason I can't seem to get anywhere near it.

Just came across this video, and you just mentioned one of your thoughts on being geared too high. I had the same experience with the esc cutting out before the finish line with 23/84 gearing, and I was using a brand new freshly, fully charged 8000mah 100c continuous (with 200c burst) battery. First 3 passes cut out before 132ft. I know it wasn’t too hot. The week before I used a 21/84, with a 5200mah 50c continuous (100c burst) battery, and I was able to get complete runs, without the esc cutting out before 132ft. I thought I would bump up to 23/84, with the more powerful battery, the next weekend, but the esc couldn’t handle it. I programmed the esc to give me the 5th level of punch (the highest), and the 8th level of timing, (the highest), and then I re calibrated the throttle, neutral, brake, (I guess they call that calibrating the transmitter/esc). I changed the pinion back down to 13/84, and tried it out on just a storage charge, (3.8 volt per cell). It did not cut out, battery was not fully charged, but got 2.84 46mph. Tomorrow the battery will be charged all the way. Tires will be sauced, wish me luck. But yeah, I think that stock esc, and motor, cannot handle that much torque, or too tall of gearing, for sure.
@RoadsideRC
@RoadsideRC 2 жыл бұрын
I agree 100% - I think the stock ESC just can't handle that much load. Good luck with your testing! I hope you find a few more tenths to knock off! :)

Hey I’m a new subscriber to the channel , your content is awesome, I just bought the Losi 22s roller kit , thats how I stumbled onto your videos looking up what I can do to make this thing better , my question is , do you think I should go with the electronics that the car comes stock with ? Or should I go with something different, I wish I was able to get the rtr but my funds at the time weren’t great lol
@RoadsideRC
@RoadsideRC 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, you did the right thing by getting the roller. The RTR is not setup for any class. Doesn't fit in 13.5, and too slow for Outlaw. You need to see what classes are run near you, and pick one to go with. That will dictate what electronics you go with.

Amazing what I find when I actually read the comments. I happen to subscribe to both of your channels. I should have read your comments first, coach d, before just writing roadside rc, pretty much what you just said. Lol….I agree it does cog, but not so much with a freshly charged battery. But I think roadside rc experienced the same “ esc cutting out”, as I did, being geared too high. My stuff was definitely not too hot, it happened to me on my first 3 runs, at 6:00am, and I check the temps on everything.

That is the exact same gearing I am trying tomorrow morning. I am using reactions, on split six beadlocks, no foams, tires cleaned and conditioned, (sticky kicks), and I just programmed the esc to #5 setting on punch, and #8 on timing. Tried this set up in front of my house, but battery was only on a storage charge (3.8volts per cell) and I got 2.84 46mph. I suspect I’ll get the same as yours an a full charge, if your esc settings where the same.

DR rc’s, just got 2.71 50mph, with the same gearing, 19/84, first run on a fresh battery, of coarse. I had to replace the stock spur gear, and slipper pads with a new one, and I also lightly sanded (220grit) the sheen off the metal plates that sandwich the slipper pads.

So your results are specific to your motor, correct? If I have a 4.5T motor, which the manufacturer suggest a gearing ratio of 7.5:1 to 8.2:1, what size pinion should I be using?
@RoadsideRC
@RoadsideRC 2 жыл бұрын
Yes - my results are for my motor/esc - total setup. There is no "right" pinion. You will need to get a set of pinions like I did, and test it for your specific situation.

im new to this hobby. ive had my car for a week. stock slipper piled and have an 84 on order. was able to put an 87 tooth in the car with the stock 16t pinion. the car launces way better and seems way faster. but seems to go against all the information ive been reading. everyone says go up bigger on the pinion. would anyone be able to offer me some insight
@RoadsideRC
@RoadsideRC 10 ай бұрын
Getting a performance analyzer - like the GNSS unit is KEY for drag racing. The spur gear swap was only 3 teeth = 3% total change (3/87). It would be an unnoticeable change. As an example, a single tooth on the pinion would be a (1/16) 6% change in gearing.

I was running better that that on stock.. r u doing burnouts? I don’t understand..and I was only using a 75c battery… 2.910 at 47 mph.. not I put a 21 in and I haven’t tried it yet.. also removed my cover cause of the axel.. if u can get it dialed in so it’s running straight instead of doing a lot of steering input that would help.. I also use a floor mat out of my car to do a burn out on.. I will try and run it this weekend and let u know how it does..
