Acrylic Pouring

You know I love my Polycrylic. I talk about it all the time, and I even wrote an article some time back about why it is my favorite finish for acrylic paintings. But there are always more finishes to try and today I’ll give a couple of spray finishes a try.

I'm a nail tech now for 20 + years. High shine nail products need some tooth to hang on to. So a very light buff with a nail file block pink or orange may solve this 2nd and 3rd coat problem. Smooth surfaces just don't stick together well. Great info.... thank you

I read an article from Golden Artist colors (www.justpaint.org/understanding-the-techniques-of-pouring-acrylics/ ) and the author said... "At this point in time we do not endorse the use of silicone oil in painting mixtures that are expected to last. There are many reasons for this stance. Most silicone oils do not evaporate out of the paint, therefore they stay within the matrix of the paint and could potentially cause film formation issues. At the very least, the silicone oil will impede the intercoat adhesion between the surface of the pour and subsequent product layers, such as mediums and varnish. As an artist, you are free to do what you want to to make your artwork, but until we gather enough evidence that there isn’t any long term issues, we won’t suggest artists add silicone into paint." - Mike Townsend So yes, it was most likely that it is your use of silicon that caused the problems with the varnish.

That's also very helpful. I just saw a pouring tutorial that used W&N paints and their gloss medium, then water until the right consistency was reached. The cells were incredible. Thanks for sharing that link.

I'm confident that it wasn't anything silicone related. I did trial the conservation varnish again after this video on a piece that had no oils at all and it did exactly the same thing. It seems that a really thin coat is OK, but when you add a second coat and do it just a little thicker to get a nice smooth gloss finish, it separates as if there were silicone. Like it repels itself! I'll keep experimenting :-)

Putting on spray paint Thick will cause dimpling. Lots of light coats do a great job and they take no time to dry. But since I hate repetition, I use Krylon Triple Thick so I only have to use 2 to 4 light coats.

I would guess that the ones that are made for paintings don't expect more than one coat (or very thin coats) to be applied, since they don't want them as glossy as we like our pours. I was using the Rustoleum 2x gloss sealer, and it looked good, but I had to add lots of layers to get a really deep look to the finish. I've since tried Liquitex Gloss Varnish and I really like it. I can even use it a little like resin, in that I can tape up the sides and pour a coat to fill in the craters that I have on some of my pours.

Debbie, I am in Australia and I have been using White Knight Acrylic spray. It being a solvent based Acrylic, I figured that Silicone would not effect it. So i sprayed one of my paintings (with no pre cleaning) that had quite a lot of Silicone in it.There is no sign of Silicone. You may like to try the solvent spray (with no cleaning) and then maybe the waterbased gloss over.

On those sprays you should do a very light mist coat get a little closer than can says as the particles dry very fast and at times the overlapping spray dries before it hits the surface. After 15 minutes do a heavier coat..Wait about an hour before doing the next coat. if you wait more than an hour to do the next coat wait a full 72 hours for best results then again start with a light coat.Then the heavier coat. I use Krylon Triple thick crystal clear glaze in a spray can. local hobby shops sell it from $7.99-9.99 however Walmart carries it for $3.47 best place to get it.Hobby shops are selling it at a huge mark up..

This reminds me, I've been meaning to ask you if you ever found a finish for tiles to use as coasters or trivets. Cuz I'm actually going to try making some LOL You should ALWAYS put UV protection on art acrylics & oils as they shouldn't be put behind glass. I use Liquitex UV protecting finish in matte, satin or gloss on acrylics (don't put acrylic on top of oils). Then if I want it super shiny I use 2 to 4 coats of Krylon Triple Thick.

A lot of people are using Rustoleum Specialty High Heat Sealer, that they found at an auto parts store if their local DYI place didn't carry it. They have also tried engine enamel, because it can withstand heat up to 550 degrees. I haven't used either because I haven't poured on tiles, but that info is from the pouring group that I belong to.

Hi Debbie, thanks for trying those out, really useful stuff. From what you said, I'm getting the idea that, with the polycrylic, if it's left to dry for a month it can be used for coasters? Does it lose that 'hot mug' tacky feeling after that time?

I would still say no. Maybe if the coats were very thin, but I like thick coats to get a thick glossy shine, and it sents or marks if you use it with a hot coffee mug, I think primarily because of the thickness.

Do you mean you aren't getting good results with the Poly? I wonder if you are using it too thin. I like to really get the brush wet, and get the canvas nice and wet too. Then the poly smooths and softens behind the brush, hiding any brush strokes and giving a really glossy finish. Maybe try adding a bit more and see if that helps.

I live in the Cayman Islands, much smaller than the DR. But I have to order almost all of my supplies from overseas. With the shipping and customs duties it costs a LOT more than the lucky folks in the US, but that's what we have to do if we live on a small island.

Are you sure you're looking at the water based sealer? Minwax also comes in a waterbased polycrylic with an oil modified formula, and in polyurethane, which is not water based.

When I applied the polycrylic in a thick coat, I got a ton of little cracks. That doesn't happen to you when you splash it on thick!?
@AcrylicPouring
@AcrylicPouring 7 жыл бұрын
Not at all, I've never had any cracks etc. But I do still brush it rather than pour and tilt, so I guess as with anything, there is a point where it works, and a point where it doesn't. It's still my favorite from all that I have tested.

I’ve been having the same problem with my acrylic pours! Do you use silicone? The only thing I can think of is maybe wiping or cleaning the painting to get rid of the silicone? I’ve been asking around and haven’t gotten an answer guess I’m gonna have to just clean em and see what happens

Where did you leave the conservatory one to dry.... it may be very similar to shellac paint that if not sprayed evenly it will cure more in some areas than others ... just a thought x

Deby at Acrylic Pouring... I have watched several vids re spray paint and they all seem to be like that.... but I did read that one lady sprayed the clear varnish and then a little silicone spray over the top and moved with her hand till level... they said that worked ... maybe you could try and let us know 😳🙂 xx

Have you tried a ultra fine grit wet & dry sandpaper between coatings?
@AcrylicPouring

I haven't . I can see that working on tiles, but I'm concerned about doing that on a canvas in case the rubbing stretches it.

Deby at Acrylic Pouring probably over complicated idea but what about using MDF sheet under canvas to support it? Also saw Sauvearts just use a small amount of varnish applied with a sponge which looked pretty good on the video & also kept the texture of the pour.

Would you say polyacrylic looks like resin shine?
@AcrylicPouring
@AcrylicPouring 6 жыл бұрын
Having used both, I would have to say that polycrylic is awesome but it doesn't give the 3d depth that you get with a resin coating. You would have to use a lot of coats to get the same effect as resin.

Hi Deby! I'm new to pour painting and, I have been following all your tutorials. I've done a few pours and, now i would like to finish them. I would like to add glitter to my finish. How should I go about doing it? Do I just add it to my clear gloss finish using a paint brush and, if I want to add glitter to my gloss, do I have to use a specific gloss finish? Thank you so much.
@AcrylicPouring
@AcrylicPouring 6 жыл бұрын
That is something I have never tried. I might think you would add your first layer of varnish and then while it is still wet, sprinkle on your glitter and let it dry into the first coat. Then add more coats of varnish over the top until all the glitter is covered and the finish is smooth. But as I say, I've never done it, so I'm just guessing. I suggest practicing first on an old piece you don't love in case it doesn't work out how you would like.

Hello! What type of brush do you use to apply the polyacrylic? I've used sever different brushes and I keep getting brush strokes. Thanks!
@AcrylicPouring
@AcrylicPouring 6 жыл бұрын
I use a varnish brush from the DIY store, nothing particularly special. The varnish should self level behind the brush and go glossy, so if it doesn't and you are seeing brush strokes, you may be using it too thinly. Try getting the brush and surface very wet, then brush off in two 90 degree directions and let any excess drip off the sides. Brush around the sides and you should be done.

Deby at Acrylic Pouring Thank you! How do you get the canvas wet without messing up the paint?
@AcrylicPouring
@AcrylicPouring 6 жыл бұрын
If your paint is fully cured, it wouldn't matter how much varnish you add, the paint shouldn't get messed up in any way. How long are you leaving the painting to dry? Ideally you should leave a month between painting and varnishing.
@iwillavenge3024
@iwillavenge3024 6 жыл бұрын
I tried lightly misting a painting with a squirt bottle and then I used a lot more of the polyacrylic than I was and that seemed to do the trick! I had no idea a month was needed. I usually wait about a week after painting to varnish.

your not spaying the clear coat wet enough on the 2nd one. the first coat should look like your 2nd coat. Then 2nd coat needs to be nice and wet. i.e. thicker 2nd coat. it will lvl out as well and you can wet sand it down the buff with a drill gun and a harbor freight little buffing pad, for perfect glass finish. Just saying.
