We reviewed the Thompson Center Compass, Ruger American, Savage Axis, Remington 783, and Mossberg Patriot to see what the best inexpensive hunting rifle is. After shooting hundreds of rounds and doing in-depth testing for over 100 hours, this is our order of which is the best and worst gun in this price point.

Please do NOT take our accuracy tests as scientific. It was more of a "real world" test. The test had many uncontrolled variables such as shooter skill, the different optics each gun came with, caliber, ammunition, etc. I'd be happy with any of the top three rifles in this test. While two of the guns in the test did NOT perform well on the particular copy we received, at this price point the manufacturing tolerances may have been at fault. You may buy a Mossberg Patriot for example, and get GREAT results. Each copy of a gun can vary wildly in accuracy at this price point because of the wide manufacturing tolerances in this cheap price bracket. Also, many of you suggested we send the Mossberg Patriot back to the company. We're doing so now and will update this video to tell you how they dealt with us in the customer service department. Thank you all for your support. We're BLOWN AWAY by how fast this channel is growing. Thank you!

I worked at Cabelas and had a LOT of customers tell me that the Compass was by far the most accurate, in terms of people raving about accuracy. The Ruger is good, but I doubt as good on average as the Compass.
@ratedredneck96
@ratedredneck96 4 жыл бұрын
@@dannylandrum7899 i actually heard the opposite on the compass. I opted out of the compass because i heard that customer service was terrible and the tolerances were few and far between. I also read that they werent a very long lasting rifle before they started shooting bad and theres some pretty important pieces that are plastic in them. So i went with the savage axis in 6.5 creedmoor.

That’s right because they got it wrong on this gun. Possibly their rifle needed lapping or some other defect but the patriot out performs the axis and xpr in every way unless there is an actual factory defect. It happens. I recently saw a $1600 custom maple marlin 336 that wouldn’t hit a half sheet of plywood at 100 yards. Remington guys can’t make Marlins apparently. Or 783s for that matter. That said these guys did say many times they may have gotten a bad sample rifle. I believe that to be the case.

Great reviews. Some time ago, I bought the Remington 783. I installed an oversized bolt handle knob on it, and it had a surprising effect on the overall feel of the rifle. The best group I shot with it with handloads was 7/8" at 200 yards. It won't do it everytime, but it surely shoots better than I can hold. I would probably hold out for the Ruger American, being a big fan of Ruger in general, but the 783 was under $300, and I'm on a budget.

I have the ruger, savage and 783 I personally like the 783 and the stock is much beefier, magnum barrel instead of pencil profile and hands down better trigger. After I work the bolt 50ish times it's smooth as butter. These guys must be biased on the 783 cause alot of people including myself love them. I have a first gen savage also and I will say savage is lights out in the accuracy department for sure as they true every barrel they make. For me if I had one to pick and I have 4 of these rifles I'll take the 783 all day. I did have to trim a spot on the stock under the barrel to fully free float and that's it 1inch groups all day.

I've got a Mossberg Patriot chambered in 270 with a Vortex Crossfire 3-9 x 40 scope. When the barrel gets hot, groups open up very wide. Not sure if that's what you guys were experiencing. My first 3 rounds through my Patriot are always right at MOA at 100. If I don't let the barrel cool, groups widen significantly. That being said - I've shot at 9 deer with it, and killed all 9. Muley bucks at 370 yards and 250 yards. And 7 whitetails all 100 yards or closer. I shoot good ammo - Hornady Superformance GMX. I would not consider my Patriot a tack driver, but it definitely kills deer. I'll be upgrading in the next few years, but it's treated me well thus far. If you've got a few more bucks take a look at the Savage 110. I've got one, and several family members have them, and they are legit.

@@philipbrown7977 The crown is the end of the barrel. The crown protector is that ring they put at the end of the barrel. Most barrels don't have that inset at the end. If your new to this stuff, I suggest you take it to a gunsmith. It only costs about $75 to have them take it off and put in a 10 to 14 deg tapper.

I have the 783 in 3006, bought it from.a friend who bought it from a guy who won it at a gun show. He already had a Tikka and just wanted to dump it . Paid 295 bucks without a scope new in box. Put a bushnell trophy 3×9 on it and 3 shots after bore sighting it I was touching bullet holes .Could,nt believe how awesome the trigger was at 3 lbs. Never even considered adjusting it .That was 4 years ago and I still love it. Whitetails don t know what hit them .Don,t know what people mean by the bolt handles a joke, mines super stout and the bolt slides like my old 700 BDL , smooth as glass, It shoots MOA and with 150 gr hornandy handloads it's a tack driving deer slayer.I dont know what anyone expects for 400 bucks but I am totally happy with mine. Rememington appealed to the budget oriented class of hunters and the 783 is a very nice rifle for the price. I,d rather have a hinged floor plate but the DBM is a nice touch , great trigger , recessed crown muzzle and very fast lock time all combine for a accurate affordable rifle anyone can afford.

And last week I took it out and had a quite good grouping with cheapo 150 grain fmj army surplus rounds. At about 100 and 250 yards. I would definitely recommend it. With the problem of accuracy you had with the mossberg patriot rifle, my first thought would be were the action screws torqued down properly. If the action is moving/shifting because the action screws are not tight, there's no way it would be able to shoot accurately. So I don't know if you checked the action screws or not, but that's the first thing I do when I buy a rifle is torque my action screws down to the correct ft lbs of torque.

I own 2 of the 5 rifles. The mossberg in 300WM and the Savage Axis in 6.5CM. The Mossberg broke the stock synthetic stock where the barrel lug meets the stock. Slapped it in a Boyds thumbhole, bedded with JB weld and it shoots the lights out. The trigger is amazing, the recoil is punishing!!! The savage axis without the accutrigger is HORRIBLE, but a 15 dollar home depot trigger job makes it more than acceptable. Both guns have taken Hogs at over 200 yards. The savage weaver scope on the axis is JUNK. Mounted an Athlon Argos BTR on sale for a few dollars more than the rifle. Bedded the action, filled the stock with construction adhesive and hamster bedding and it's an absolute tack driver.

I own a Mossberg - Maverick 270 Win. The Maverick line was best known for their M88 shotguns which were the cheapest shotguns you could buy at Walmart. The .270 Maverick did exactly the same thing your accuracy test showed until I dropped a cheap Limbsaver De-resonator on the end of the barrel about an inch back from the muzzle. Groups shrunk from a previous best of 4-5 inches to between 1/2 to 3/4 inch with cheap Federal Blue Box 130gr ammo. It now outshoots my 2 buddies' Tika T-3 and Weatherby Vanguard guaranteed MOA rifles with every ammo I try in it. My rifle/scope combo cost about 75% less than theirs and is a constant source of irritation at deer camp.

I purchased a T/C Compass in 6.5CM this past October on the used market here in the Houston area for $250 with no scope and I have been very pleased with mine. After 3 different brands of ammo I settled on the Remington 140gr Cor-Lokt PSP that consistently produced sub MOA 3 shot groups. I mounted a Pentax 4.5-14x42 scope. All groups shot better with the thread protector unscrewed from the barrel and in my pocket. Couple of things....the recoil pad is excellent. I found it soft and useful. The box magazine is difficult to load all 5 rounds at once. There is no problem loading 4 and if one opens the bolt while inserting the box, easy peasy. Who needs 5 rounds on a deer stand anyway? I am 74 years old and a very experienced shooter/hunter. My trigger pull is 4lbs. A previous owner may have adjusted that in someway but it is crisp and I like it. I painted the stock a camo pattern and that really helped the looks of the rifle. I love the 6.5 round. I have a custom 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser that was done for me in 2000. Your subscribers need to know that the 6.5 is not a long range "hunting" cartridge but it is an excellent whitetail cartridge under 400yds. My shots are always less than 150yds. I highly recommend the T/C Compass.

When I was young I purchased a 110E se cond hand. 5 inch plus grouping. So, lapped the bolt, then "worked the trigger tension spring hex nut". Change out wood stock to a fiberglass. All the while reloading 30/06 rnds , different brands ect. Finally 220 gr Speer soft tips. Compressed loads. That gave me cloverleafs and a 6 lb. Hunting rifle. In that process I also changed the recoil pad to a Browning decelerator ( shapeable) pad. It was awesome, and like a fool, I sold it to an idiot that did not appreciate it.

Awesome job gentleman. Just got a close friend of mine into hunting and wqnted to help him find a solid starter rifle. Im satisfied that either the axis or ruger would be a good place to start. And a threaded muzzle from the factory is AWESOME and im surprised you didnt touch more on that with the ruger. I intend to put him on some predators this year and a muzzle break or suprressor capability is great.

As a gunsmith I’ve worked on 3 of the 5 you guys reviewed. -The Remingtons seem to be a good value, but the bolt handles break off easily because of how they’re attached to the bolt body. -The Mossbergs... don’t like the barrels. The ones I’ve threaded I’ve had a hard time getting the bore to run true on my lathe because the path of the rifling is so out of true with the line of the barrel. -The Savage Axis has some cheaper parts (like the trigger), but out of the box has the best trigger (my opinion), and shoots the best. Also very easy to work on, accurize, and head space if you’re doing barrel work. I have no experience with Rugers or TC’s so I can’t speak to those. Just my opinions. Hope that helped

It doesnt really surprise me when it comes to the Mossberg Patriot rifles having junk barrels. I remember picking one up and inspecting it at my local Dick's Sporting Goods and it was just screaming 'too good to be true!' At a deafening volume, LOL. real walnut stock, nice finish on the stock and all the metal on the rifles, not to mention a fluted bolt and fluted barrel for around $350. Yeah, unfortunately I was right from the get go and it is basically in the Webster's dictionary if you look up the phrase 'very nicely polished and fluted turd'. 💩 It doesnt really surprise me though, even with the shotguns that are popular, the Model 500's/590/835 all feel SOOOOOO insanely loose and sloppy they feel like they're going to just start falling apart in your hands when fired. Compare the Model 500 to the other big dog of pump shotguns....the wonderful Remington 870 and there is just no comparison in my opinion. I'll be the first to admit that the Mossberg shotguns ARE good reliable weapons I just cant get past the complete lack of ergonomics and loose sloppy tolerances when compared to the Rem 870, Browning BPS, any of the Winchester 1200/1300/SXP'S or even the old Ithaca Model 37's(2hich Ive never been a fan of) but IMO, in the pump shotgun world the Remington 870 is the Cadillac of that world while the Mossbergs are the Ford Explorers, LOL.

Anthony Ridge I agree with you about the rifles for sure. I do, however, feel that the receiver and bolt would be a great start on a bolt rifle build if you had some money to put into a rebarrel and blue print job. They’re very easy to head space, and have a good bolt design. I completely disagree about the shotguns though. I’ve shot and worked on both. I’m a Mossberg 500 guy all day long. I’ve had more business from parts breaking off of Remingtons (like the ejector) than I have Mossberg 500 series, and the Mossberg’s are much easier to disassemble and maintain. The 870 is a good shotie, don’t get me wrong. Just my opinion. I do agree that the Mossberg’s tend to feel a little looser though.

Probably don't have any experience with the Ruger rifles because they are all pretty much a guaranteed sub MOA rifle! Especially if you season the barrel with copper fouling and shoot it "dirty" only cleaning it occasionally with gun oil. Mine shoots 1/2 MOA or better with most Hornady factory ammo!

Terribly unfortunate about the Thompson Center Compass. I agree that the mags are awkward but they are easy to get used to. I can't imagine what caused that issue with the cartridges getting stuck inside them. I find my TC Compass to be a pleasure to shoot with a good muzzle break and the build quality quite good. Got mine for $300 and I couldn't be happier.

My son and I have many really nice rifles to choose from in our safes but lately we have been experimenting with entry level rifles. Between both of us we own all the models you have and sometimes multiples in different calibers. Long story short, our experience was about the same as yours with the Ruger and Savage, honorable mention go's to the T/C Compass. My son's is in 30/06 and it's a solid performer shooting just over 1 moa. We bought a Mossberg in 308 that also shot patterns but the standout was the Ruger and Savage. The Savage was in 270, bought used and abused, and after a deep cleaning and lube it was shooting sub moa with my handloads. The Ruger was also a standout shooting like yours in 7mm/08. We gave the top spot to the Savage Axis just because it shot moa and I just purchased one in 6.5 Creedmoor with a heavy barrel for $350 over Christmas after rebate that I swear from the first shot went VERY moa. The Ruger cost $150-$200 more and frankly, IMHO there isn't much difference between them. Buy the way, that catch on bolt opening with the Savage is because it cocks on opening and if I'm in the woods and it's slung on my shoulder, if a branch catches the bolt handle I would feel and hear that bolt unlocking if it got that far. Good review.

My wife has hunted deer and pronghorns for years with a Remington Mowhawk 600 in .243. Perfect for her. For years she tried to use a Winchester Model 70 featherweight for elk. Just a bit too much for her in weight and length. A few years ago we got her a Ruger American Compact in .308 for elk. The compact gives a bit of a kick but she is able to handle the weight and length quite well. Back to the topic, I have no problem with the Ruger American...a great little gun for the casual hunter.

Best advice is spend the money on a well built firearm, and scope (if you're going to use a scope). Pick a popular caliber you will be able to find rounds for anywhere. I have needed to buy rounds in small towns before, and you'll probably run into this one day. Lastly, know what you're planning on hunting, and the grain bullet you will prefer. The rifle twist rate is going to determine which bullets you can shoot accurately. 6.5 creedmore is a newer super popular round, although the twist rate on lots of these rifles could have issues stabilizing larger grain bullets. If you get a .243, .270, 7 mag, .308, 30-06, or .300 win mag you can find rounds anywhere.
@w4shep

I have a Mossberg Patriot in 270 that I won. I wouldn't have bought it on my own, not because of it being a Mossberg but because I don't have a use for a 270. But the extremely light weight, decent trigger, and the DBM made me decide to keep it. I put an old proven accurate Burris Signature scope I have had for years on it. I tried several different factory loads and all hovered around an inch MOA. I have taken a few Whitetails with it and it works just fine. It isn't my go to gun by any means, but I don't feel hindered by it if the distance to target is under 400 yds.
