This is my first time watching one of your videos. You might have already made an in depth video of your shower system. I like the idea of only needing 300 watts to heat up your water so a person can take a quick shower. Hopefully I will find a video explainging how your water tanks and solar power is setup. I'm trying to design a small lightweight travel trailer using a quad recumbent trike with an elecrtric battery and pedal assist. I got the idea from watching folks over in Europe using cargo boxes to deliver packages. I just want to be able to use mine as a camper with all the amenities. I want to be able to cook, shower and go anywhere I want without needing any fuel whatsoever except solar panles and a nice top quality generator like my Eocoflow to run my 72 watt heater and my small fridge. Thanks for posting your video. Have a wonderful day Dadz Van.

I am about to do this and I have 800w on the roof of the van and have found the same capacity hot water system, in a square shape. I will get silicone heating pads, slap them on the side of the tank, use my own thermal sensor and controller to regulate it, while keeping the AC guts all untouched. Enabling it to still be powered from the inverter or mains power as well as the lithium battery. But the best part is I will sense the voltage on the battery and when the battery is showing it is in the topping off stage I will enable the hot water system to charge from the solar coming in. I will also have a bypass that will let me choose to heat the water when the battery is at any voltage.

Instant vs stored is the question - with a tank you can heat hot water with "spare" solar and use it on demand. With instant you might use solar during the day and at night it will be straight from the batteries. Weight wise - I guess it is the weight of the tank filled with water vs some additional batteries. Instant does seem to be the simpler solution too.

Yes they are. The run of 10 feet from the battery to the thermostat require a 6 gauge according to DC wire gauge charts. I put in 4 gauge for this, no cost difference. The short run of only 4 inches could actually be done will 9 gauge but I used 39-2 as it is more robust. The reason I had the panel off was to check heating of the wires during operation. I noted none. I will be putting a 40 amp breaker in near the power source. Thanks for the comment!

Do you have any advice/references/links, so as to punch in all the data, ie what I am planning, what I will run, and what the climatic conditions will be in this part of the hemisphere etc to determine whether my 410w 'Canadian Solar' panel will suffice and what amount of battery Amp will be req etc? You should be fine with the 410watt panel as long as there is sun. A bank of good Lithium batteries will define help as they can be run so much farther down. Start the water heater o the way to your parking spot or while it’s on shore power before you go out would help for sure too. I heat mine a lot on the drives to places. Then it just stays warm on the solar. Good luck and have fun

I think this is a better solution over propane hot water tanks or instant-on propane hot water heaters. What I would do different is have a well sized electrical system that operates at 24vDC. Go with a 24vDC hot water element driving at least six gallons or better yet 10 gallons. Plug into shore power when available, engine alternator driving a 12v to 24v isolator when on the road, or finally battery/solar when parked and boondocking. Why the extra capacity? I'm thinking after driving for three hours or so the hot water can be fully heated and the capacity is high enough to last the night and the morning without needing a reheat and use up power.

@@ronb6182 Part of it for me is not cutting a hole in the side of the van or trailer wall for a conventional propane hot water heater. Now, I doubt there's any total savings as the battery system would need to be upgraded. To me it's a combination of attributes that has me thinking about a no-propane hot water heater. I am aware that propane hot water heaters can be had with an electric heating element. So if one has no problem with propane burner venting, both heat sources would be available.

@@Snarge22 yeah there is different applications which makes it go for one over the other. To me I cannot have a tank in the mountains which requires emptying the tank every time I go up there. Because I never know if I make it before a freeze. I would say the majority of the time I go up in the cold season more than not. Even March it freezes. I may go electric tankless up there. In Florida I already poked a hole in the block wall so my instantaneous water heater is already operating I just want to save the hot water because of the 20 minute max time running. If the tank is full then the water will be hot for a longer time the DC elements I will use will be for backup during hurricane shut down. Propane may not be available so the generator will provide AC and DC power which will heat the water and AC will be for the refrigerator and air conditioner. I would like to do solar but panels on the roof could get damaged so portability would be better for solar. Thanks I very well understand where you are coming from. Big 73

The element is stamped 300W and came with the plate jumpers between the elements so I will assume it is 150 x 2 for 300Watts. This is also the DC draw I see on my Victron screen through the smart shunt. As for the wiring I replaced the black and white wires with 15/3 house wire and ran them both through the thermostat. This may be one of the reasons I have not had any issues with the thermostat as a couple others have. Hope that helps.

I am doing this right now (thanks for sharing) and I just ran into a concerning thought. It looks like you are using the same wires (black and white) that came with the unit. My guess is these are 14 or 16 gauge. If these are wired to the heating element does that mean 300 watts are pulling through the wire at the 12 volts. If so isn’t that too high of a rating for those wires or do you only need the large wires (6 awg) connected to the other points of contact like you have in the video?

I really don't know how much gas is in these machine given tanks someone told me you be lucky to get 15 pounds of gas next time I need a fill up I will weigh the empty bottle before trading it in. Then I will know for sure. So I think in an RV which this heater was made for would work and you wouldn't need to carry a big bottle. But most RVs have one or two bottles because of the gas stove and water heater and also heat for the RV. I considered a 12 volt water heater for a while, but gave up on the idea and here's why: I'm running a 608 AH System with a 2400 watt inverter at 24 volts. It's one of the all-in-one varieties, so It handles the solar input as well. In the end, it's all just energy and I'd rather have the 1400 Watts from my Bosch WH (58.33 amps at 24 volts) going to heat the hot water in 15 minutes vs 3 hours or so for the 12 volt. I still have solar on the roof and a couple of portable panels for about a total of 600 watts of solar, so those can still be used to charge the battery. The difference is I don't have to wait. Sure, the inverter uses 60 watts power while it's running, but it only takes 15 minutes to heat 4 gallons of hot water up to temperature. Again in the end it's all just energy. Higher/faster, lower/slower. The battery stores the power in either case. And for anybody wanting to use their engine to heat hot water, just buy yourself a heat exchanger or cooler (used for beer making). A heat exchanger can be used to cool as well, and they just tend to be cheaper to purchase that way. You can get a 30 to 40,000 BTU model for about 80 bucks. You'll need a small one gallon or so per minute pump to push the water from the water heater through the heat exchanger, but the water pump from the engine will push the coolant on the opposite side of the exchanger. It takes a very short amount of time to heat 4 gallons this way. You can do the math if you want to, but it's going to depend on what size heat exchanger you buy as to the time required, but it's very quick. I use a similar setup on my recirculating shower, so my domestic hot water does not go through water heater that's been used for the recirculating shower. The engine holds residual heat for quite a while too, so you still get some heating effect even after the engine is shut off or a good hour or so (just a bit slower). It's a good way to use btu's that normally just vanish into the air. Lots of options. The only advantage I see to the 12 volt is if you have limited battery power, but you pay to wait as well. If you have a larger Lithium ion phosphate battery bank you can still take advantage of the solar. I like your ideal though!

So the other dude that did the same 12v conversion to a rheem 2.5gal tank, but used a 600w element, timed how long it took for the tank to go from cold to 143F. Took about 30 minutes. So I'd assume it would take about an hour to get to temp with a 300w element. That's really not bad tbh. Only uses 300w and would at most be used once a day. On a 400ah system thats 16 days of hot water without charging the batteries.
@TroyD-vo1bz
@TroyD-vo1bz 7 ай бұрын
While we can have a difference or discussion about methods we cannot disagree about facts. You can't change physics. It takes a given amount of energy to heat up a given amount of water, regardless of the source. Fact. If it takes 15 minutes at 1400 watts /120 volts to heat say 4 gallons (11.66 amps) It would take 2.33 times longer at 600 watts, Assuming 120 volts. Once you start converting to 12 volts, It would then take 116 Amps of power to accomplish the same thing or nearly 10 times as long at the same amps. Once again, Higher faster ,slower longer. Personally, I'm running a 24 volt system so I'm only using about 6 amps of power, which can be handled in some fairly small gauge wire. If I was to pump 116 amps through the wires I would need to use something like 1/0 or larger wire. At 300 watts and 12 volt it would take roughly 20X the amount of time. You would then have heat loss to contend with over that amount of time, so It would take even longer.

Except 110v AC has to go through the inverter, which means ~10% of the energy is lost to heat/inefficiency. Additionally, for someone with a system already bumping up against their inverter's max draw when everything is on (like when you're cooking), having the heater draw direct from the batteries could prevent an overload on the inverter (assuming the batteries still have enough current rating. My system has 9800 watts of current capability from the battery, but only 6000watts on the inverter. Moving the water heater to pull direct from the batteries gives me more inverter headroom when I'm running induction cooktops, AC, fridge, etc. My plan is to go ahead and run the water heater on 110v AC but if I hit the limit on the inverter even once, I'll switch the water heater to DC. There's trade offs for everything, it's not always about cost. Sure, I could just remember that I have to turn off the water heater if I use the hot plate, but my wife and I are forgetful, and I don't want her to panic just because she forgot to turn off the water heater. We have the battery capacity and solar to spare, so who cares if it's left on here and there? The lithium cells will calendar age long before they hit their max number of cycles.
