This might be the BEST INSULATED CAMPERVAN for COLD CAMPING we've ever seen! Although it's gotten down to -5C, this winter van build is progressing at an exciting rate! We are not skimping on any of the details, and working hard to ensure this van will be comfortable in the Norway for winter vanlife, and in Turkey during the summers (plus everything in between!)

The Ultimate Van Build Journey:
In Season 1 of the van build, we stripped off the old DPD stickers, rust-proofed the entire van, painted it our favorite matte grey color, redesigned the cab, planned our van's design / layout, created our epic water tanks, built our custom panorama roof windows, installed new wheels, & installed an insulated floor! PHEW! Building a home is something else! bit.ly/LM_SEASON1
Then Season 2 of the van build rolled around, and with our workshop's renovation behind us, it got TECHNICAL! We built a 47 degree solar tilt (1kW of solar power!), made custom seat bases & installed our custom seats, we took security to the NEXT level, breaking down our 12 incredible layers of security, wired everything our tech-dependent home will need, created the BEST insulation we've ever seen in a campervan (check out our video on campervan insulation & cold camping insulation), installed our own custom security cameras, framed the ceiling, AND created our peak-a-boo curtains. WOW!! We are beyond ready to be off grid in this Ducato van home! ❤️ bit.ly/LM_SEASON2

🐾 Who are we?
We’re Ladi (from Czechia) & Margaret (from USA) and we love eBikes, campervans, & cats. In 2020 our van life lifestyle flipped upside down, & we needed to stop traveling in our camper to lockdown in eastern Czech Republic due to the pandemic. With no travel plans and some new time on our hands, we decided to sell our old van, start an electric bike business, begin a youtube channel, build our ultimate dream campervan, renovate a junkyard into a tiny house homestead, plan a container & apartment unit, and… well, some other smaller projects in-between 😅.
What we thought would only be 6 months of “stillness” has become 2 years of innovation, progress, and so much fun, and most of that is thanks to YOU. Although we’re excited to be back on the road and traveling the world again soon, we’re so thankful to lay a foundation here in Central Europe & bring you with us on this crazy journey. Thank you for supporting us and being part of this incredible community!

Happy 2022!! New publishing day is SUNDAY, YAHOOOO! We’re so excited to join you on the weekends, when you hopefully have the time to kick back, relax, & enjoy some timelapses & kitten purrs! Don’t forget to let us know about YOUR insulation expirience! This comment section is SO helpful not only to us, but to those who are just beginning their van build journey! If you could give someone just starting their van insulation advice, what would it be??

Love your videos! On behalf of us who are dependent on the captions to understand these videos (Deaf or Hard of Hearing), could you please check how your captions are working…. Captions come across in two separate lines on the bottom of the video. For some strange reason the lines on your videos overlap! Hard to watch. Usually one would give up but the info you present is so good I don’t want to miss it! Thanks!

Have been watching van build-outs for some years now. Have not subscribed to any before but your site appeared out of nowhere so I watched this vid on insulating your van and subscribed. Will go back to your first vid to get up to date. Proper insulation and air circulation has a lot to do with comfort. Am told that insulating the floor properly is most important and requires special attention so am looking forward to how you will tackle that phase of your build. I like and respect minutia! Getting “all” the small things right add up to a most favourable outcome! Wish you two well each and every day!

I LOVE THIS! This is the first video (and ive seen 100's) where someone did insulation like this. I have ADHD and all the stuff you were doing was "my thought exactly" and makes total sense to do it the way you did.. I was always curious as to why people didn't cover the metal support beams because that is direct contact with the outside metal of the van. Heat transfer is real lol. Hi Margaret and Ladi. Great job with the conversion so far. I wanted to make sure you guys are aware that rear lights can only be taken apart by unscrewing two bolts from inside the van. Yes came onto the comments to say this. I fitted a grey water camera, in fact exactly the same swivelling camera you have there, a few years ago and it took several iterations of the 3d printed mount to solve the problem of dirt blocking the lens. I eventually found that recessing the camera in a hemisphere 50mm deep, along with a 100mm deep 45 degree angled shield in front of it kept it clean the vast majority of the time. I’ve actually now bought another tiny camera from eBay with a built in water jet but that’s going to have to wait for every other possible job to be done. Great video as ever 👍

You actually made me feel better about our insulation! We don't have all the equipment - just scissors, bread knife and box cutters to cut and a table. So we did pretty well. When we saw the spring sticks we both went 'oh dang! that would have worked'. We held the insulation sheets over our head (standing on a small step) until the glue took - that was a terror. Would have been worth paying the hardware store to rip a plywood panel for spring sticks if we'd thought it out!! And now that I see the kflex and how you were able to cut such precise panels, I see how you can aspire to use vapor barrier technology and lack of thermal bridging. Our van will just have to follow the good weather.

2003, we converted a 1996 Ford CF8000 commercial truck to our concept of an ExpeditionVehicle. For insulation, we used: * adhesive-back acoustic against the outer wall, a gap, then * one-inch pink-board, another air-gap, then * two-inch foil-side poly. Our floor is one-inch pink-board, then half-inch marine plywood painted on all surfaces to seal. Our visual floor is a perimeter of bamboo surrounding a slate center. . Our windows are 3612 -- three feet wide by a foot tall -- dual-pane sliders designed for a stand-still house. . Our interior is 7w x 12 l x 7h, about 700cf. . Our heater is an ancient Wave 3 catalytic; we rarely use it above 40°f... on its LOW setting of 1,700Btu. We adjust our interior temperature by further opening windows, a half-inch here, an inch there.

Should have seen this video before I made my camper! I used glass fiberglass wool insulation that has reflective on one side so it is easy to glue to the van. That worked pretty well but then the vapor barrier was wayy harder to make because you have little attachment points.

Hi Ladi and Magaret. I have a purchased motorhome. When I use it during a winter holiday I notice that there is a cold draft coming through the holes near the belts in the cabin. So do not forget to insulate the cabin behind the plastic panels near the belts.

Yes it makes completely once you explained it. You normally have a very good reason. I enjoy the videos. Have you ever thought to use 80/20 in your build. Looks so nice what you have done.

While it may not be tenable to do these intensive and perfectionist builds often, I greatly appreciate you doing this. It’s very insightful and important to see the highest standard, so we can compare and know that there’s a higher level to strive toward, more knowledge and experience to be learned.

Thanks for saying it. We built very basic van before in just 3 months and living it it for a year was absolutely amazing! I don’t want people to think only high end van will make them happy, it’s more about being out there!

On my T4 I used much the same materials to insulate as you. Not as good a job obviously. But I also cut up those interlocking foam floor tiles you can get to wedge in the window area at night. Sort of worked OK for me.

Those wee ‘supports’ in the smaller cavities will allow condensed moisture to wick and run along them from the outer skin to the inner skin and drip off. Like brick ties without the wee zigzag bit in the middle.

Yep, great video!! Great use of multiple materials for different spaces. We winterized our van, and have successfully crossed Canada in the winter time this past month. Cabin temperature was always comfortable, however we had two days where the outside temperature was below -25C and our water pipes froze overnight. I’ll be very interested to follow along and watch what techniques you use to mitigate this problem! For us, it is mostly a problem of not being able to circulate the warm air of the heater effectively into the garage space near the water tank. Great video!

Is your piping all internal? And you still had problems with freezing? If so, how "closed off" is your garage (presumably this is where the freezing took place) from the main living space? Do you have any insulation on the pipes?

If your plumbing is in your garage split your diesel heater output so it puts some heat in the garage iv done it and it works great and it stops the damp in the garage and if your bed is over your garage it's great at night as it heats your mattress like a electric blanket and I also found I was keeping my heater lower as the heat was going straight to me in my bed

I guess the beauty of doing your own build, you can be as OCD as you want to be. After watching all the work that was put in to insulating this van, I think I will just get a 5 gallon bucket of ceramic insulation and then spray foam 2” over that. I think that should give me an R21 or something like that. In this coming April (Lord willing) I will be insulated my 26’ school bus.

Thanks for the video. I know Ladi is a perfectionist but doors need to be able to drain water as they are never watertight, all moving parts will let in water, like the door handles for example. Waterflow is obstructed and at the bottom of doors the water drain holes now clogged by the foam or the wool will get wet. I see this in so many insulating videos. 🤔

Off Topic... Hey Margaret, you know what I'd like to see? Like a Proust Questionnaire of van lifers you run into on the road. I've learned about the KZfaqrs and bloggers. What about the people supporting themselves off-grid and not doing media facing stuff? Who are they? Who is this community? Anyway, just a thought. Know you guys aren't traveling so much. But, had the idea, and thought, if anyone can do something with this, it would be Ladi & Margaret. Ok, thank you, as ever, for the content, I'm glued to your story. Be well.
