I’m quite surprised at any review that promotes stigmatizing hearing aid wearers. I have been a wearer for over 25 years and it has always grated on me that people feel they need to hide their need for a hearing aid. Your review promotes that stigmatism.

Dr. Olson! I got my hearing aids this afternoon! I had them on initially for 3 hours then had take a little break. It was honestly sensory overload and a little scary. Thanks for the videos they really made a big important difference in my life. Past 5 years I have built like a little cocoon around myself. Always avoiding talking to people and always wanting to use email or im's because it did not require hearing. Tomorrow I need to start making important calls to get my butt out of SF and up to NY to my new place. Thanks again n God Bless!

As a teenager with hearing loss since birth, it blows my mind how far technology has come in the realm of hearing aides. The prospect of essentially functioning as a normal person with the use of ear buds, head phones, showering, and whatnot, is something I though was only possible in my dreams.

It is truly wonderful how much audio tech has progressed, Im looking into hearing aides because my father has recently gotten a pair. Sorry you’ve been having to deal with hearing loss to that level, I cant imagine how hard that must be. I hope that you’re doing well with school and such, cause kids can be real brutal for no reason sometimes. I remember when I was younger I had hearing problems to the point where they had a speaker on my desk, and the teacher would wear a lav microphone (that equipment sparked my love for audio lol.) and kids would pick on me for it. Now I’m an audio engineer and audio nerd. In the past ten years, the performance, quality control and sound quality of most audio related gear has gone far beyond what I thought possible back then when I was a kid. Im 21 now, and I’m starting to lose my hearing more, and my tinnitus has progressively gotten worse (don’t stand next to a 100 watt guitar amp with no hearing protection, I’m still kicking my 15 year old self for it. You’d be surprised how many people do that.) Its good to know that if or when the time comes for hearing aides, the technology will be absolutely stellar.

I'm a TV/film actor, and I've worried that the hearing loss I'm experiencing will eventually affect my career. But these invisible hearing aids have me thinking otherwise because they are virtually invisible! TV/film production still requires masks because of COVID, and I learned early on that I was having difficulty understanding people, not only because of the mask, but because I couldn't see their lips. I will definitely check into these. Thanks!

Thanks for your videos, they are helpful in deciding on the best hearing aids. I ordered a custom set of Phonak Virto P90 Titanium CIC hearing aids and this is my feedback: I have been trying them for about a month. My main complaint is when I talk, my voice sounds like I have a head cold. My provider says that this is due to the lower frequency sounds being trapped between the aid and the ear drum. Wearing these aids feels like my ears are plugged but I can also hear better (very strange). We are sending these back to Phonak to have them drill out the vent hole that will help to release the trapped frequencies. But my provider said that, even with the drilling, they will never be like the quality of hearing that the RIC hearing aids would give. In the interim they gave me Oticon More RIC hearing aids. The difference in my hearing with these hearing aids is like "night and day". With the Ponak, I find myself having to pay close attention so I can understand people, with the Oticon, my hearing is effortless. My suggestion for your reviews on the CIC, IIC aids would be to discuss the "downside" of these hearing aids (which is significant). My opinion is that there is absolutely no comparison to the quality of my hearing when putting these two "side by side". The Oticon More being the winner by far.

Hi, Dr. Cliff. I love your videos. I have learned a lot since I started watching them a few years ago. I have otosclerosis with moderate hearing loss in only my right ear. I trialed a pair of behind the ear hearing aids. I didnt like them at all though. The back ground noise was too loud and the difference between my right and left ear drove me crazy. Here is my question: what type of hearing aid or/and features work better for low frequency hearing loss? I have been interested in the Silk X recently but have no idea which one to choose to suite my needs.

Thanks Dr Cliff for all your videos. Really appreciate them and learned from them a lot. What is the reason you didn't include Eargo in your best IIC Hearing Aids? I really like them, and I think I'm not the only one. I also saw all your video reviews on Eargo, including the one about the DOJ investigation. Maybe I'm wrong but it seemed a little bit that since your impression video about this investigation, which non of us really know what's inside it, you kind of let that affect your professional opinion about their products and therefore avoid recommending them. So, maybe that's my personal wrong impression, but I would really love to see your video review about Eargo 6. Thanks again for all your efforts. They are very well appreciated!

About 4+ years ago, I had a sudden sensorial hearing loss event from extremely loud music which caused low frequency hearing loss. I upgraded this past week from Eargo Neo HiFi's (which I wore for 1.5 years) to Phonak Lyric's. So far so good. I love that the aids remain in 24/7 and are completely invisible. The sound quality is impressive as well and I've noticed a reduction in tinnitus. Thanks for the recommendation Dr. Cliff.
@digitaldan476

@Some one I'm glad they prescribed steroids for you. They failed to do that for me after multiple trips to ER and doctors. I tried the Eargo Neo Hifi with some success. They were able to amplify sounds pretty well although I had to send them in for replacement every 3 months or so from static. I could hear birds chirp and rain. I moved onto Phonak Lyric 4 which are very expensive at $300 per month. They're completely invisible, wear them 24/7, and get replaced and inserted by a audiologist 4mm from ear drums every 2 to 3 months. They've helped with low frequency boost like volume and bass. Sound quality better than eargo but for high frequency gain, your loss needs to be worse than 20db for benefit. I get more low frequency benefit out of lyric. For more cost efficiency, Kirkland Series 10 hearing aids run for $1,399 and are a behind the ear receiver, if you are OK with a visible aid.

Hi Doctor Olson, I love your videos. I wonder if you could research whether the top-level brands offer the option to turn OFF bluetooth connectivity when not in use. I am concerned about the signal being transmitted constantly to my ear, very close to my brain. EMF radiation is a real concern and something that you do not seem to address in your videos. I saw an audiologist and she had no idea whether it was even possible to disconnect the signal for the bluetooth between my phone and the hearing device. If I could turn it off, it would be a safer and more useful feature - I could just enable it to take a phone call or listen to music. Thank you very much!

Dr Olson - another brilliant review, such helpful guidance and easy to follow. One suggestion, do you think it might be useful to provide a basic chart showing the key differences between these aids (doesn't need to be complicated, just something high level)? So when people watch your review, they can just pause on the chart and it will give them a quick snap shot of what they would gain or lose when selecting one of the hearing aids you mentioned in your video. Its just an idea, feel free to discard it if its not appropriate!

Longtime IIC user ( from Starkey) and someone with annoying tinnitus. Strongly think twice about the Lyric. Most tinnitus is caused by hearing damage (age related, external, or both). It's not well known but our hearing is more susceptible to damage when sleeping. Having amplified sound come into your already damaged ears from background noise when sleeping is not good. Give your damaged ears a rest at night as much as possible, and at a minimum that means turning off the amplification (which, BTW, doesn't "restore" your hearing, you know. It works by making everything louder). My Starkey IIC (Soundlens, I'm getting the Evolve next), is completely invisible. Ask for a super-short pull string and "drag" it out with your fingernail against the canal. But mainly, you have to find an audiologist or ENT doctor who will do a DEEP impression. That is essential. Every audiologist I've seen (but one) was too "timid" when making the impression since it's so close to the eardrum. It's kind of an iffy thing going in that deep, so you need someone with skill and confidence. That's why I said ENT. They are used to working on the eardrum, so maybe they'd do the impression part. For me, IIC is the way to go. If it's in deep, there's no occlusion (you voice being loud) and you never have to worry about it falling out. And, of course, no one knows you're wearing a hearing aid.

I am currently trialing Oticon More RIC aids with custom power ear molds as I now have severe loss. They work very well, modestly better than the Opn RIC aids I am replacing. I also have older Starkey Soundlens IIC aids that still work but not as well, so I know I can use say a Lyric IIC comfortably. As I am still athletically active, I like the idea of Lyric's if they will work satisfactorily for me. But would I be losing somethings important versus using the Oticon More or Phonak Paradise 90 RIC aids? Like hearing in noisy environments?

I've had to give back my NHS on the back of the ear hearing aids, because I found them to be more of a hindrance than a help, I have Meniere's Disease and both my ears are effected, but I have very little hearing in my right ear and constant tinnitus in my right ear too, I would like to try some invisible hearing aids because my NHS ones were very basic, no bluetooth, no telephone switch. I had to remove them to answer the phone, I couldn't wear headphones and listen to music with them on, When I went to a Cafe or Restaurant all I could hear was the background noise and not the people speaking to me, If I turned them up they would whistle. So after a year or so I finally decided to give them back with a letter explaining why, I was told when I had them fitted that eventually my ears would get used to them given time, but they never did , I just felt like I was drowning in background noise and not hearing what I wanted or needed to hear.

I had the lyric hearing aids for two years and gave them up. I’d advise anyone thinking about buying them to stay well clear, trust me I know from experience. Yes they fit down the ear where people cannot see them, but the microphone can break or become faulty very easy as the tiny yellow sponge is so delicate I had to travel across the country every 3 months just to get new devices fitted, as they have to be replaced 4 times a year, and sometimes after a week or two they became so faulty I had to make the journey back to my professional to get new ones fitted. I paid £3000 every year just to keep the subscription going. Also once they are placed inside the canal the professional will advise you to not take them out. It becomes very awkward washing your ears and you cannot under any circumstances get the lyrics wet or the sound will go completely off. Now I just put up with my hearing loss. I didn’t see the point in paying for something that really should be free. Nobody should have to pay to be able to hear properly, especially not 3 grand. It’s a money making ploy for all these big companies. Absolute rip off please save your money you’ll thank me. If you can get a normal hearing aid with batteries do it, and if someone notices you have a hearing aid don’t feel ashamed or embarrassed, it’s none of anyone’s business as long as you can hear properly. It will save you years of trouble and messing about, and money! It was so bad I remember there was one time my professional lost all my specific hearing data tailored for my needs in the computer and I had to go through the programming and hearing test procedure all over again for another two hours. It was ridiculous. Any questions you need to know about the lyric don’t hesitate to ask me and I’ll answer them?

I have severe hearing loss in both ears and osteosclerosis I can't hear much at all without hearing aids. I'm a US Veteran and I've been wearing Phonak Nadia and I'm at the point of frustration that I know there has to be something better then having to deal with a large device that hangs on my ear along with my glasses is not comfortable and can hurt at times. Then there is the moisture issue. I sweat and have destroyed countless sets due to the moisture from me sweating. I've also jumped in the lake and shower forgetting to remove my aids too many times to count. I also wear my aids at night when I sleep. How am I supposed to hear an alarm or someone breaking in my home if I remove my only way to hear before I go to sleep? Today's technology I would think I'd be able to find something that's waterproof. I've been researching the cochlear implant but that seems barbaric! Not removable!!?? Side affects are possible migraines. There has to be something better!?!?

@@sonny451967 It’s like all these adverts and rich companies they will do anything to get your money, and that’s why I’m letting people know so they don’t waste 3 thousand pounds or whatever it is. These people are not genuine and will make out like the devices are amazing but they are rubbish. Cliff Olson here with his fake smile never told you about all the problems I went through, obviously. If you can get a standard aid in both ears do it. That way you can put the batteries in yourself without travelling half way around the country to get them changed. All the lyric and phonak are not worth it at all, put your money away and get cheaper heading aids. The lyrics I had we’re definitely not waterproof, in fact one splash of water and the sound would diminish or turn completely off. Nobody should have to pay to hear properly. Ever! These devices should be absolutely free.

I watched and enjoyed your "BEST Iinvisible Hearing Aids of 2022." Very informative. What struck me IMMEDIATELY were your comments about, in particular the Phonak Lyrics, since I have been using them for 5 years and LOVE them! I'm sorry I hadn't discovered them years earlier! The one problem is, as you said, they are a SUBSCRIPTION service device, so I originally paid $3000 PER YEAR, which has risen steadily up to $3600 last year. What I DID NOT hear to mention was COST!!! I know you mentioned that costs vary, but I would like to know, at least, the RANGE of these costs. Also, other than the Lyrics, are the other 3 mentioned initially PURCHASED, their anticipated life expectancies and whether rechargable or battery-replaceable? Thank you for a most informative and enlightening video! I await your reply! Larry Agrapides

Hi. From Turkey-Istanbul. My English is not very good and since there is no Turkish translation in the video, I would like to ask a written question. My age is 28. About 10 years ago, I had hearing loss in my right ear. And since then I have not used any device. I really like Phonak Lyric and I'm considering buying it. What I want to ask is do I have to charge it every 2 months? And will there be any problems in air travel? In addition, can I use it as an iphone airpod with a smart device? If I can use it like this, how will it charge?

I'm not Doctor Olson but I can answer to some of your questions. 1. You pay yearly subscription around 3-6k per pair and the hearing aid gets changed every 2 months at a specific practice. 2. You can't use it as an earbud/earphone.

I've got resound IIC from 2015 and they do NOT sit in my ear canal like yours. You can hardly see those! Mine are clearly visible if someone is looking at my ear... I was hoping they would be just like you showed in the video but nope! I'm going to my audiologist next week to ask about new ones... I have pretty moderate loss and am considering behind the ear, although I am one of the ones who is very worried about what others think... Are some of the IIC you showed as strong as the behind the ear ones?

Hi Dr. Cliff. I'm about 10 days into my first hearing aids and somewhat disappointed with the present state of affairs after a one week period including a visit for adjustments. I'm not really seeing much difference with my moderate hearing loss and particularly the higher frequency deficiencies. I scheduled the original visit and testing because I was intrigued by the Phonak Lyric advertising and hype. Yes, I'm one of the vain ones who doesn't want the hearing aids seen. I was sold a pair of Phonak Audeo P-50R hearing aids because my HAS convinced me that the Lyrics would not be as effective because of them blocking all open-ear incoming sounds and not supporting my higher frequency losses. I have never seen any indication of this limitation in any of the reviews or user comments. Are these legitimate limitations or am I being manipulated by the provider? I was also told that there was no trial period with the Lyrics and I'm not sure that this is true. I would appreciate any comments that you would be willing to make. Thank you.

100% of lyric fittings start with a 30-day trial period. It is standard. They may charge you an initial fitting fee, but all Lyric subscriptions can be canceled within 30 days so the clinic is not charged by the manufacturer. I believe the Lyric system is worth a shot before you consider other options. Besides, why go so low in tech level with the P50-Rs?

I saw a new audiologist today because HA's were not covered by insurance through my old audiologist. I have a moderately severe bilateral cookie bite hearing loss. My old audiologist was recommending the Oticon Real premium aids. The new audiologist is recommending the Lyric. Our insurance covers 90% of either type of HAs. What are the benefits of analogue vs. digital? I don't really care about the visibility of HAs, but my husband, who is an engineer, thinks the analogue will be better for me because I'm a classically trained non-professional vocalist, and he says the analogue should have less of a delay than the digital. I'm also in training to be a professional counselor, so being able to hear and comprehend speech is incredibly important. I know that I may not be able to use the Lyric very long if they were to work well for me because my condition is likely to degrade over time and will likely have to switch anyway, even if the Lyric works for me. What are your thoughts on this?

Interesting video. I just picked up a pair of Starkey Picasso i2400 iic yesterday. I love them. But, although it's iic, it doesn't sit deep in my ears like yours. Every iic you demonstrated seems to disappear into your second bend of your ear. Mine seems to sit or stand out at the edge of the second bend and is noticeable if one looks into my ear. I'd like for them to be completely invisible like yours. Any suggestions?

It has been a rollercoaster for my husband. The ENTs could not define the reason of hearing loss after numerous tests, MRI, CT, etc. They suggested the sinus surgery, which he did in November, though unfortunately that did not help the ear. Since receiving my COVID vaccine and booster, I've been plagued by increased tinnitus in my left ear. My primary care physician confirmed I don't have a wax build up or a bug causing occasional clicking that interrupts the high pitched whine (she laughed a little when I asked her to look again for a bug). My physician referred me to an ENT, but I'm wondering if that is the logical next step. Do ENT practices typically have an Audiologist on staff? Or should I go straight to an audiology practice? Which comes first? Am I stuck with whatever HA the ENT practice carries? Your video talking about the Lyric HA being best for tinnitus makes me want the hearing aid. I need the 24/7 wearability because night time is the worst time for tinnitus, and it hurts to sleep in earbuds for a side sleeper. I've been using your tinnitus canceling video to help override the tinnitus, but putting it on a speaker isn't as effective and it disturbs my husband. Is Lyric the only 24/7 hearing aid for tinnitus? Is that my only option for night time relief? Don't get me wrong, tinnitus bothers me during the day as well, but I need all-the-time relief.
