Dan, thanks for making this video, you did an outstanding job with it! I'm having an issue with my XS Max, I use both Moment and Olloclip lenses for macro photography, and the XS Max has horrible chromatic aberration, older iPhones had a minor issue with this, but only in certain and few conditions, but the XS Max is really bad, in just about every lighting condition for macro photography and I'm disappointed. I don't think that it is the Moment and Olloclip glass causing the problem, because I used the exact same Moment macro lens on my previous phone, the iPhone 6s Plus. Now, with that phone I did notice chromatic aberration as well, but was mild, it is much much worse with the XS Max. I don't like to complain because I LOVE my phone and use other Apple products that I love too, Macbooks, iMacs etc. I just wish that I could get word to Apple about this because I would love it if the next iPhone had better results for macro photography. I've considered making a video showing the problem, but I don't want to sound like I'm trashing the phone, it's just that I wonder if Apple is aware of it, and I also don't know how to test if it IS the phone camera or if it is the lenses that are causing it. Any ideas?

By the way, if you want to test this yourself with your XS Max and macro lenses, you'll definitely notice it if you photograph water drops on plants/flowers outdoors. If you do happen to try it and have better results, please let me know. Thanks!

I'll have to try it outdoors where's there are more hot spots and contrasting elements.. I'll be honest, I don't do a ton of macro photography with my phone since the focusing distance is so limited. I'd love to see any examples of what you're talking about though. I'd also be curious if you've tried taking the photo both with the default camera app and another that can do RAW (I'm still undecided on this for phones). I'd wonder if some of it might be influenced by Apple processing. - Dan

I understand. Macro photography with a phone can be frustrating sometimes, ha! I will try to make a collection of photos that can show what I'm talking about both with and without the lenses attached. I'll let you know when I do and maybe I can send them to you. I have tried shooting RAW and adjusting settings but it doesn't seem to have an effect on the issue. It is worth experimenting, I just need to carve out some time and also have a good weather day at the same time :)

Why did you not mention Sirui lens. Also rhino sheild, moment and sirui lens they use exactly same mounting system . Their cases are interchangeable

I chose a rhinoshield case and 4k wide + macro lens from rhinoshield. For telephoto and anamorphic, I'll get moment bas they are compatible with rhinoshield case as well!

That's a good point that Olloclip is the only company that offers different macro options since a few of the lenses are dual purpose (some kind of wide angle + unscrew for macro). I'm with you on the build quality. The older one's that they sent me had an attachment for the clip to fit on when not in use and it helped protect it. I'd be really worried now about the thinner plastic parts if they're left in a backpack or purse with other things. But hey, the clips are also entry level priced. - Dan

Yes, the thinner parts seem like they could be fragile. However, I have dropped the attachment clip multiple times on hard surfaces when I put my phone in my pocket while taking pics with my big camera... it comes off the phone easily, and so far it is intact. One other thing, I don't know for sure exactly... but I have my first scratch on my phone :( it is really small and can only be seen in certain light if I tilt the phone, but I think it could be from using the Olloclip because it is where the clip would be. So now, I'm going to have to be extra careful and wipe the phone and clip every time before I use it.

Thanks. Do you know if they've updated their lenses to handle the larger camera sensors of the iPhone XS generation? It looks like their last cases were for the iPhone X so I'd worry that there might be some vignetting issues. - Dan

@@macpublishing it should be possible as they have clip based setup also and I have seen a video with Samsung s9 and p20 pro which also have bigger camera

The moment lenses will fit. I'll say that the RhinoShield Mod And Solid Suit cases aren't much cheaper and you will still need to get the adapter (I warn that it's easy to lose if you take the case off often). RS does give you more customizing options and are a little thinner though. For me the adapter issue is the sticking point though. - Dan

@@macpublishing Thanks. I usually keep my case on unless I need to clean up my phone. And with the moment case, I'm scared that if with time the case hole broke, I'll need to replace the whole case instead of only the adapter if I'm using the RS. Just wondering if the moment lens fits as good on the moment case as on RS case.

I haven't tested on Android but the Moment app and ProCam app are both pretty good on the iPhone. I use it since iOS doesn't give you manual controls and it allows me to force using the telephoto camera when I want to (otherwise it auto determines whether to use the telephoto or a digital zoomed standard lens). I feel like most Androids offer a stock camera app that has manual controls for photos and you could skip 3rd party in that case. If you're thinking about manual controls for video then 3rd party might be good. I'm more familiar with Filmic Pro than the Moment app for this though. - Dan

I don't have any experience with the Pocophone but I'll try to answer. Your limitation is going to be that none of these lens makers have cases for the Pocophone, so you're going to have to rely on a clip (which I'm not a fan of). That leaves Sandmarc as your only option. If the Pocophone has a wider field of view, then you're likely to end up with some vignetting in the corners where it'll be either completely black or darkened, and then you'll have to crop in. For what it's worth, Sandmarc has a 30 day return policy so you can try it out and see how well it works for you. www.sandmarc.com/pages/warranties-returns

It is compatible with most cases but make sure you buy the rhinoshield adapter for your phone type

Wow great eyes that you spotted them. I agree that the Sirui lenses produced a comparable image quality when I tested it on the iPhone X. At least at the time, the mounting system was either the clip or a terrible case that required an easily losable adapter like the RhinoShield I talk about in this video. In the end, I preferred the other systems for overall package, price, etc. I'll have to see how they fit on the Moment case along with the RhinoShield now. Which phone are you using? Using most of the iPhone X lens versions on an iPhone XS produced strong vignetting for me. - Dan

So it does fit, but I am getting vignetting on all 3 lenses I have: Wide, Tele, and Fisheye. I wonder if they'll come out with new models to handle the larger sensor of new iPhones. I'd suspect that the market is pretty competitive and may not be worth it for them though. Just goes to show that all these lenses are far from "future-proof" - Dan

I tested both Sirui and Moment (version 2) on an iPhone X and Xs. In photo mode, both the Sirui and Moment Fisheye lenses vignette on the iPhone XS, but the Sirui is much sharper in the corners. Neither vignette on the iPhone x with the fisheyes, but the Sirui is still sharper in the corners. In video mode, neither vignette due to the crop. With the wide lenses, neither vignette on the iPhone X in photo or video mode, but the Sirui is sharper in the corners. On the iPhone Xs neither wides vignette in video mode, but the Sirui does vignette in photo mode, so here the Moment has an advantage. With the Tele lenses, neither vignette on the iPhone X, but the Surui is sharper in the corners. On the iPhone Xs, I get a super tiny amount of vignetting with the Sirui in photo mode, but the corners are still sharper than the moment. My conclusion would be get the Sirui lenses if you have an iPhone X as there is no vignetting and the lenses are sharper than the Moment lenses. If you have an Xs, get the Sirui lenses in you only shoot video as there is no vignetting in video mode. On the other hand, if you shoot mostly photos on the Xs, then the Moment Wide (version 2) is better than the Sirui since the Sirui Wide Vignettes.

The wide lens is probably the most useful regardless of which brand you go for. This is especially true if you have a phone that already includes the telephoto. - Dan

The Moment case is exceptional quality, I have no trouble at all with dust and no extra pieces that can get lost, it goes on and off the phone very easily and it feels great in your hands. I use the Walnut Wood case, it gets wet all the time because I do macro photography in dew and rainy conditions and the case has never had any issues. I also like the bayonet mount and how easy it is to quickly get a lens on and off. I've heard that the Moment lenses do fit on a Rhinoshield case, but if it were me, I'd get the Moment case too.

Awesome. I'll have check the compatibility on Monday since I left some of them at office. My gut says that they probably won't be compatible though. As far as dust goes, they all kind of have that issue. I'd say the RhinoShield is probably the worst though since it has one of the smallest openings so it's a little hard to reach in (if you're like me and using your finger with a shirt). You might want to check out the lens pen (www.shopmoment.com/shop/lens-pen) from Moment, it does make cleaning super easy and quick. I like it but I don't tend to carry it around. - Dan

Just tried and I can confirm that they are interchangeable for me. The Moment lens on the RhinoShield case works and the RhinoShield lens on the Moment case works too. Which case/lens combo will you go with? So now I think it was just in my head about the RhinoShield getting more dust. Probably a combination of when I was doing my testing, it came after the Olloclip and when I was taking it out solo, I was in Hawaii. - Dan

Macworld thanks! I think I will buy the Moment telelens and perhaps the Moment wide lens. I love the Rhino case. Perfecr combination for me I guess!
