@James Henderson- Not really, those deferments were readily available for other men who had young children. He is just more famous than most who used that option. It was an available at the beginning of the war, but there are methods to the madness. They could have been a later deterrent if they were needed and at first, it looked pretty bleak for the US in the early days of the war. Many guys who were judged 4F due to previous injuries or inability to serve for variety of reasons, my wife's grandfather being one of them, who was told he couldn't serve in the active military but he still served in the home guard. They could have very much been needed if Japan was able to land enough combat forces in the lower 48. Floyd [my wife's GF] was so proud of his machine gunner first class medal that he made sure to show it to me after his GD and I married in 1985. He had been a journeyman electrician who helped build McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita, KS, and other places before and during the war. He was injured when low flying bombers shook him off his hanger scaffolding and he ended up forceably straddling a pipe. He told me once he didn't need both of 'them' to shoot a machine gun. After the war, he helped wire missile silos during the cold war out west. He stood 5-foot 2-inches and was tough nails. You've got to love a man like that. When he passed, I made sure to tuck one of my Desert Storm combat patches in his hands before he was lowered into the ground. I sure miss that man. God Bless Floyd and give Goldie a hug for us. Just my personal distaste for this actor, without real cause. Always figured it was simply his conceit, loving himself so much his arrogance sickened me. Perhaps your story explains it better, with my coming from a military family whose Dad served in WW2. I did not choose that life or steer my son in that direction either after relocating, but appreciate all who have chosen that life. I’m grateful we now have an all volunteer situation thanks to those who have fought and died for such freedom for our nation to become that free. I still pray that we stay this way by staying united and one nation under God. If we lose these two things, all bets are off. Not political and not a religious statement, just my opinion. GBU

About 40 years ago I came to the conclusion that “if you don’t have anything to die for, you don’t have anything to live for.” This may seem counterintuitive however when the going gets tough if you don’t have something worth dying for, you are apt to quit fighting to stay alive. It is known that a single person in a life raft will often die sooner than two people even if the supplies in both cases are the same per raft, not per person. This is probably why people with pets live longer as the pet depends on the owner.

I've Always been a Wayne fan, but one of the best, if not the best movie he ever made wasn't even a western or a war movie, it was John Ford's "The Quiet Man". If you like Wayne but have never seen it, make the effort. Great story line, casting, score, etc. You won't be disappointed. It's all the main John Ford cavalry trilogy characters - in Ireland. The epic fight scene between Wayne and Victor McLachlan takes up the last third of the film. Your wife or girlfriend will hate the scene where he drags Maureen O'Hara across the fields, but hey, it was set in late 1920's Ireland not today. I know I'm probably preaching to the choir here, and most of you have already seen it - some of you may even know the script by heart, (it's that kind of film), but for those who haven never seen it, it just might become one of you favorite movies. Great week for it too. Happy St. Patrick's Day!

John Wayne was a hard-nosed Marine sergeant, a naval lieutenant and a commander of an airborne battalion during the invasion of Normandy. But those were his movies. Wayne never served a day in the US military and has long been accused of being a ‘draft dodger’ because he staunchly avoided putting on a uniform and going to war when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941. The truth is that he did avoid military service but not because he was a coward. It was so that he could continue his torrid affair with the older German film star Marlene Dietrich, then aged 40. It wasn't even his real name. He was a true American hero...what a load of crap!

An actor that acted like a man with class, a man with honor. Marion Robert Morrison. The John Wayne quote, that rang true many times in my life was... A MAN HAS TO KNOW HIS LIMITATIONS... I have heard a lot of rumors about Mr. Wayne, both positive and negative. I never saw him portray anything less than what a man should be. Strong, brave, confident, tough, honest ,fair, loyal, proud, and always with a sense of humor. If you have not seen any of his movies take a little time to see how men acted when, men were made of steel, and ships were made of wood. Now it is the other way around.
@vajrapani64749 жыл бұрын
That "other quote" that you're attributing to John Wayne was actually Clint Eastwood's from the 1973 flick, "Magnum Force" I don't recall any Wayne movie with that line. But as to all the rest you wrote.... I agree with you nearly 100% ...ships haven't been built from wood for over 150 years.
@mastersengineering9 жыл бұрын
Thank you sir or miss, you are correct in the fact that Mr. Wayne did not say that in a movie... I read that in a book his 3rd wife( Pilar Pallete ) wrote about him. While her book was not published until 1987, they separated for ever, strangely enough in 1973, having not spoken for some time.(according to another book I can't remember which one) This actual statement was a personal one, made by Mr. Wayne as more of a way that he lived his life sometime around 1954-55... Might I add that, I also have a lot of respect for Mr. Eastwood's work. Though like all of us, neither one of these two men might have been perfect in their real life.... I would say they both portrayed the kind of men I wish there could be more of... Once again thanks for pointing that out to me, and sometimes I go off and don't clearly express my views correctly. I hope this keeps my opinion on the positive side for the good people who actually take time to read. Like you, who I can tell has above average focus for detail and lots of patience to put up with all of the negative uneducated rubbish we all have to wade through in order to find someone to connect to. Your words are well received and the ship quote was stolen from my Dad. He had a way to make you feel you could never quite do enough. His way of motivation I believe. (plus I built a one man ship out of wood and a tractor tire tube when I was a kid. Though a tiny ship, and very un-ship like in every way. With my pirate flag, a tee shirt and black pen skull , it made it half way across our pond before the tube ran out of air and I had to abandon her and swim for my life.) Pirates do not have the heart to go down with their ships.

masters engineering Cool, I understand where you're coming from. ...and I understand what your father meant, had I known that was a quote form your dad, I would've let it pass. When John Paul Jones, stood fast and told his men "Don't give up the ship"... there was a mans' man. An true inspiration for every Yank. I loved the old sailing stories All the books on Capt. Hornblower by C.S. Forester...great stuff. One of my biggest thrills in life was getting to go on the U.S.S. Constitution, in the harbor at Boston in 1972. btw...my fav. John Wayne quote, as I just found out the other day, is surprisingly what was placed on the headstone of his grave, recently. As He was in an unmarked grave for over twenty years. I had always thought it was a line from one of his movies that someone else had wrote...but everything I could find that had anything to say about it, attribute it to John's own hand. I never knew how articulate he could be. "Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. Comes into us at midnight, very clean. When it arrives it is perfect. It puts itself in our hands. It hopes we learned something from yesterday." John Wayne

John Wayne need I say more. That name speaks volumes in and of itself. I think the best example that this gentleman left, was to be a true man he stand up for what's right and what's wrong regardless of what the crowd does. That's what this man did on-screen and off-screen. In my humble opinion, this man is just as much as American has an American flag, hasn't Lincoln Memorial, or as Washington DC and all it stands for. At least in his movies good always prevails over evil right always Prevail over wrong. Where are the real men today, there are few and far between anymore. Patriotism love your country stand up the For the Constitution and what it stands for. God bless you John Wayne I wish I could have met you.

I, to this day still stop, think & say those words. Thanks John Wayne for inspiring so many Americans during those times. Did u know when he was weeks of dieing of cancer, he walked proudly on stage in pain with a body suit under his tuxedo hiding his body mass loss ... not let the young children down.
