On the subject of compendium teams which you touch on, in my opinion there are three noteworthy ones which can be made with a single box and are in the upper margin of power for compendium teams. These are: - Deathguard - Best list with the extra specialist to swap in or out can be built from a single box of 40k plague marines totaling 7 models. Team is a traditional elite team with a variety of specialists similar to Legionaries but with a fair bit less complexity, making them a bit easier to learn for new players. - Grey Knights - Very simple team loadout wise with very clear best options. Single box of strike[er]s/purifiers/purgators/interceptors (all the same kit) lands you 10 models and you only need 6, allowing you some duplicates for extra gunner/leader options. Great for learning how psychic powers play into the game. - Ecclisiarchy (Sisters of Battle) - A team of 2 battle sister squads can be made from a single box of 10 40k battle sisters. Team has so interesting features like 2 melta guns, a damage trick tactical ploy and a 10 model team all with 3+ saves. Fairly straight forward as most compendium teams are but nonetheless are easy to learn and pretty powerful (especially with 2 melta's vs. elite teams). Hopefully this covers that aspect for those interested. Good luck in your games!

As of now, the most economical way of starting an Intercession Killteam without splitting up with a friend is buying a Primaris Crusader Squad box for 60$. You get 6 Intercessor body with both bolter and chainsword to play around with and loads off melee weapon plus pistol to make an Assault Intercessors sergeant. You will also get all sort of blings to customize your marine too. The downside is that you are missing the gunners and the grenadier, the only bilter available is Auto Bolt Rifle, and now you have 4 un-use Scout Marines.

Super handy! Kommandos also officially the funnest and ‘killteamyest’ team. 😀

A viable (though maybe not super competitive) Compendium option would be getting a box of the new Tyranid Genestealers! The new models look great, they are fun to play on both type of boards, they are not complicated to pilot and GW seems to be quite intent to not release a Tyranid Kill Team any time soon...

Orks were my first kill-team and I think they were an absolutely awesome beginner team, and probably my favorite team still. I also own the corsairs and they are great, and introduce you to a lot of other mechanics, like healing, dual activations, fly, etc. I don't have as many games as them under my belt yet, but that's just because I never have finished painting them haha.

I think Kasrkin are literally the perfect beginner box. Except for the fact that they hit on 4's (ik its an old argument) so they kind of feel swingy, but they have ploys and elite points to alleviate this.

I mainly play Voidscarred Corsairs and think they are a fantastic team, picked them up early into my KT obsession and, touch wood, are yet to lose a game with them

The Nob's shoulder is relatively easy to magnetize, so there's no need to just stick to one weapon forever. Not really a new player option (no bits box or conversion skills yet?) Abut for someone who would like to play one box vet guard and likes the Catachan aesthetic I can recommend a box of Space Nam by Reptilian Overlords - 20 models, all weapon options inside, just need to find some bits/conversions for specialists like the medic or the demo trooper. No need to buy two boxes to get a full roster of Veteran Guardsmen.

Playing Legionaries for 6 months now and they are still fun. Just wish Tzeentch was a bit stronger to provide a good alternative to Nurgle.

Just get the wyrmblade team. Its complicated to play, not insanely good and like $120. Perfect for new players.

Imperium magazine has assault intercessors in sets of 5. No need to buy a full box.
