There are many great lessons to be learned while you’re young, especially knife safety and care. The standard for Boy Scout knives has almost always been the timeless Swiss Army Knife, and the best fixed blade to pair (troop permitting) has to be a Mora. We’ll talk you through what to look for in each so you and your Scout can be prepared for the next outing filled with those essential life lessons.

David. Your comments on scout knives are right on. As a former scoutmaster your concern about finances is accurate as well as prudent. These young folks do have a tendency to lose things. Mora is an excellent brand and the multi functional Swiss Army knife solves many situational issues that come up when young people camp. It’s not true that fixed blades are not allowed. BSA National does not limit either fixed blades or blade length. Local councils or troops may apply restrictions and state laws may come into play. Thank you for supporting Scouting.

I'm Swedish and I grew up being a scout and I can attest to the Mora / Swiss Army Knife combo. It got me through many weekends of hiking in the forests and mountains. However I would recommend using the back of the saw as a striker for the fire steel as the 90 degree angle is perfect for it, and it's not something you want to keep sharp like you'd want with the awl. And for those tiny fire ants I've found that the wirecutter on the bottle opener is the perfect tool.

As a 50 year old man who was a boy scout and a sea scout, I currently carry a swiss army knife, have a mora in my sailboat, gave my son a swiss army knife and a mora, and couldn't agree more that this combo is the right combination. I also bought my son a blue kabar dozier (blue for the same reasons, also it looks less "tactical", aka kill-y.

@@realbroggo I had a butterfly knife from the 70's as my first knife. Steel with real wood inlay. I was probably ten. Busted all my knuckles, but after summer I could do it no problem. I was hooked on blades ever since. I'm glad I can share this passion with my son and he seems to enjoy it just as much. I'm glad you were able to share your passion with your sons as well, it truly is unexplainable in terms of words these memories that we make. I've extensively tested both the Forester and it's predaccesor the Rucksak. Rucksack came out on top, on : Ease of carry, Ergos, knife blade (Could make great feathersticks and cut way better on any task, while the Forester would not make feathersticks and had noticable more poor performance on all cutting tasks) Same for the saw, the one on the Rucksack cut easier and faster. The only real advantage of the Forester, was the cup lifter tool, which could work better as a prying tool (thicker more steel) Other than that, even the same tool as a flat screw driver, worked better on the Rucksack, where on the Forester, could only do huge screws. The Rucksack is also like half the weight, thus can easily be carried in the pocket, where the Forester was very heavy for any pocket. I lke the feel more on the Forester, but the older model, is far more capable and even though whe you look at them, you would easily pick the Forester, the Rucksack is by far the better tool! Rucksack, Alox Harvester (Swiss Army 7) , Explorer, Huntsman and the Spirit X multitool, are my top 5 Victorinox tools, with the Climber being my honorable mention, for it's size and ergos perfection and the neccesery edc tools it comes with!

When i saw the question I immediately thought of just about the exact combo just slightly different. I was thinking of the MORA 511 basic, same thickness (.08) and actually an 1/8" shorter. Also always the most cost effective MORA for this purpose, right now you can get a 511 with red handle or black and tan for $7.99 (today). I might have switched the HUNTSMAN with the CAMPER, you don't get the scissors with the camper or the package lifter (not needed outdoors anyway) but all the other essential tools you mentioned are there for $5 less. JMHO. This combo may only save the SCOUT $9 to $12 but that could be used for some paracord/bankline roll, Walmart single walled stainless steel bottle or a cheap pair of leather gloves etc.. GREAT video and topic, love waiting for the weekly videos, Thanks!

@greekveteran2715
@greekveteran2715 2 жыл бұрын
That's how a knife should be, thick contoured handle that still isn't completely round, to give the feel of the cutting direction and not a thick or super thin blade to cut and slice perfect! Steel is very tough and easy to sharpen! Something that people forget to mention, on Mora knives, is that the sheaths are not just functional, but they don't allow the blade touch the sheath. which is a HUGE plus for a knife that is meant to be used in the outdoors! For example, when you collect wild edible or mushrooms, where you put the knife on the ground to cut very often, you don't have to clean it every single time, that you have to do with any kydex or leather sheath!!!!! Morakniv and Fallkniven sheaths, are the most uderated sheaths, because they are the only sheaths ,that offer that!!! Swedish steel and knives, are some of the best in the World!!!

Hey DCA, thank you for revisiting this question. Since answering this question the first time, I’ve sent my scouts’ parents to the Knife Center with your advice. Our last troop hike involved some fire building and primitive shelters and out came new Huntsman’s and Mora’s. Excellent advice from a fellow scout. You did your “Good Turn.” My younger son is working on his Cub Scout Whittling Chip and is learning knife safety with a Mora robust. The fix blade with finger guards is much easier and safer than attempting the same work with a pocket.

Good point that I didn't think about. I guess this is why I give kids fixed blades but never .. had a solid reason lol. It is safer you are right but while of course safety is number one, I guess I can counter my own argument with well a folder may be more dangerous at first for a kid but. Mine are mine so I can make those decisions hahahaha. I'm a use what you're going to have type. I always prefer a fixed blade although I think it's a bit overkill at times, if I had to pick one. Ya.

DCA - awesome video. My family have been part of the Scouting movement for many years and recommend it highly to all. For their first knives, all of my children received a Swiss Army knife and a Mora 511. Great combo. Great for kids to learn knife skills; not too big/heavy/complicated to manage yet very usable and reliable at the same time. Non-knife and non-Scouting people may not get this, but getting your children their first knives and teaching them how to use them properly is truly a life memory.

Only badge I duplicated was space exploration bc I loved building the rockets, but wilderness survival was a good time! And I second the huntsman. For a SAK, the Huntsman (corkscrew) and Fieldmaster (phillips) are both GREAT options. The wood saw, scissors, and smaller blades are my most used tools. The Ranger (Hunstman + metal file + couple of screwdrivers on that back side) is $10 more. The metal file offers some nice capability for touching up an axe, or deburring anything metal, or as a nail file. I would add a Bacho PG72 folding pruning saw. These are under $20, and available in orange. These cut very well in dry wood.

Excellent suggestions DCA. A 3/32 inch micro ferrocerrium rod will fit nicely into the SAK corkscrew and can be further wrapped with waxed jute twine to create a very low cost fire starter. The back of the SAK saw blade is an excellent ferrocerium striker. Might also mention that a common pin fits behind the corkscrew. It can be easily magnetized, by rubbing a magnetic in the same direction on the pin, to create an emergency compass when floated in a leaf in water.

Great reviews. I'm an active scouter (Scoutmaster, former Cubmaster, and wilderness survival merit badge instructor). BSA frowns upon fixed blade knives (they don't forbid them but most units and even some councils do), and I strongly recommend positive locking blades to reduce risk of injury from inadvertent closing during use.

One of the saddest moments in my many years of B.S.A. Scouting was at summer camp morning muster and flag raising. One complete idiot Scout "leader" singled out a young Scout and humiliated him in front of the many Scouts assembled by accusing him of having a weapon in camp; his smallish sheath belt knife. I was horrified and tried to explain and comfort this new Scout. This is where knife "safety" obsession gets us...instead of sensible training!!! Do you want to bet if that Scout ever continued in Scouting?

I'm on my local troop committee and found a 1962 Boy's Life at our camp. It had an advertisement for the official BSA Sheath Knife at the time. Even our local scout shop carries the official BSA fixed blade knife so I'll never understand the lunacy at our district's summer camp of banning fixed blade knives but allowing shotgun and rifle shooting plus swinging an axe.

When you get a bit older, and the eyes won't be able to see without a magnyfing glass, you upgrade to the Victorinox Explorer! I did that since I hit my 40's last year and I use the magnyfing glass on the Explorer everyday and way more often, than any other tool on it, even the knife! I used to edc the Climber, which is a Huntsman without the saw. The Climber has the perfect thickness for many reasons, especially using the knife for bushcraft tasks, however, the Explorer may took me a a couple of weeks to get used to the slightly thicker grip, but it's by far the best Swiss Army knife I ever had! PS I also edc a Spirit X for the last 5 years, which is another tool I'll never change! PS 2 I added a Knipex Cobra 150 in the edc mix and Fenix LD 12 with Energizer 2000mAh rechargable, for the most perfect edc carry I ever had! I can't live without them, literally!

Do you know of any clip points that may still offer the one handed opening and closing while still keeping the traditional clip point shape? If you are deciding to collect I would throw out three knives to check out: the Pioneer- the current iteration of what was the classic actual Soldiers Knife issued. The Trekker (or Soldier) which is the modern issued Swiss army knife by the Swiss army. (The difference is in the scales) And lastly get the Swiss Champ- which basically has all the most common tools. There are other cool knives like the Cybertool Series or the Evogrips (or any Delamonts... ) SAK collecting can become a bit addictive...

When I reached the rank of scout, I got a buck folding knife, a leatherman multitool and a box of strike anywhere matches and never went back.... to the scouts.

I've purchased the fire ant set or at least one of each section. The tinder isn't durable and pocket friendly at all. I carried the tinder on my sak and it basically fluffed itself up in a couple of days

There's several companies. Just got to look up what you want in blade steel and brand. Mora does a wood carving knife in that configuration too.

I agree with the feildmaster and huntsman, but the BSA versions are better but more rare. "No corkscrew" as scouts don't need it. They get a Phillips instead.

The Victorinox vs. Wenger Swiss Army knives. Is the wenger of similar quality?
@glennnanod3160
@glennnanod3160 2 жыл бұрын
They were comparable, but most would choose Victorinox. Victorinox bought out Wenger and is not making Wengers anymore, the factory is making Victorinox knives. They have kept some of the more popular designs and turned them into Victorinox designs. I have knives from both companies and EDC both depending on my needs.

To your assessment that the best combo for beginner Scouts are Mora and Victorinox, I say...well duh! The only possible alternative 'might' be the Bacco Laplander saw with mora 'like' knife combo. Just a thought.

Hi, DCA! Okay, so...I'm looking for a somewhat specific knife and I was hoping that this is the place to turn to. First, some context. I am a martial artist, and I work at a retail store in an area where open carry of firearms is encouraged, so the culture would be accepting of something ranging from traditional to tactical. I am always in need of a blade to open boxes and for general use as what comes up in day-to-day operations, but if push comes to shove, I'd like a fighting knife similar to what I'm already familiar with as an option that *isn't* "just shoot them." I ran with an Off-Grid Knives pocket knife for several months, but the aggressive texturing on the handle was chewing through the lining on my pockets. I've decided that what I probably want is a fixed blade for scout carry towards the front, and because of my martial arts background, a traditional tanto (or even an American tipped tanto, really) would be appreciated. I'm looking for something 4.5 to 5.5 inches with a scout carry ready kydex sheath. The Cold Steel Kobun looks good (although a boot sheath or vertical carry are NOT what I'm interested in), as does the Civivi Tamashii. Can you think of any other ready options that fit the bill?

Don't think they carry Glock products and if you are referring to the Field knives (IDK that they make any other knives) those things are way heavy, probably 2X+ what the Moras weigh.

Original Glock model 78 field knife is better than the sawback 81 version, it's a great, near-indestructible field tool. But not really Boy Scout material 🤠

@@MB-jg4tr You are right, that was my mistake. Saw back is good for making tent pegs, notches for traps, etc. I think both of the models are quite indestructible. It’s more of a military standard knife, also pretty decent as a camping, survival knife

‼️Dexter Russell Green River Works 4215 "fish & hunting" knife‼️ Never makes it on the list but is much more affordable ($23 jungle River store) and a MUCH BETTER‼️ fixed blade for most outdoor applications. It's the exact same tried & true design a lot of our great great grandparents used. Still made in USA the same way it has been for almost 200 years. Maybe knifeCenter doesn't sell them :/ Cheers.

But maybe not the best for youngsters as there's no handguard and it does have a good sharp tip. I'd also recommend the Morakniv pro stainless for older children and the Ontario RAT 2. The SAK camping/explorer/huntsman for just starting out. Unfortunately most BSA won't authorize fixed blade carry anymore and some require a locking blade.

Very good selection, 100% agree. I only would underline, that the boy/girl scouts are kids: They MUST have a chain connected to the swiss knife. And I missed heavily in my youth, that I didn't learne to sharpen my knives out in the field. I only learned to ask my grandfather, who was a hunter.
