Scoliosis is a highly variable condition. Customized approaches are necessary for treatment and care. Scoliosis symptoms can depend on variables such as age, location of the curve, type, and severity of scoliosis. Each person's symptoms are unique, and there is no way to predict how scoliosis will affect a person.
In general, the more severe the scoliosis is, the more likely it is to create symptoms over time, especially during the adult stage. Severity is measured by the size of the Cobb angle of the curve. Mild: Cobb angle measurement of 10-25 degrees
Moderate: Cobb angle measurement of 26-40 degrees
Severe: Cobb angle measurement of 40-80 degrees
Very severe: Cobb angle measurement 80 degrees or greater
The more severe the scoliosis, the more likely it is to cause pain and disrupt sleep and other functions.
Scoliosis can affect sleep in many different ways.
Thoracic scoliosis can affect the rib cage, and this deviation makes it uncomfortable to lie down in certain positions. Laying down or on the sides may cause discomfort. In severe cases, it can press against nerves and tissues and even cause difficulty breathing.
The best sleeping position for someone with scoliosis, in general, is the same as for patients who do not have scoliosis, which is sleeping on your back with thin pillows. The issue with patients with scoliosis and sleeping on their backs is that the asymmetrical pressure caused by the scoliosis can make it uncomfortable for them to sleep on their backs. Sleeping on the stomach is the worst position to sleep in, yet in some scoliosis patients they find it comfortable as they don't feel the discomfort of the asymmetrical pressure.
A mattress that is overly firm can increase the discomfort experienced by the asymmetrical pressure on the spine, so it is best to sleep on a mattress that is a bit less firm and allows a bit more support to the patient. A good mattress should also help with heat regulation since one side will have more pressure, and the patient can feel more heat on that side if not properly dispersed.
Sleep is overall important, so if you cannot sleep on your back, then you must sleep in the position that allows you to fall asleep, as sleep overall is very important not just during treatment but in everyday life. Sleep helps the body restore and cultivates an environment of internal healing. It calms down your muscles, and laying down removes the compression of gravity.
Commonly, during treatment, patients are given a brace to sleep in, and sleep becomes a treatment option to help reduce the curve, so the best way to sleep for scoliosis patients during treatment is in their corrective brace.
Treatment options that address the underlying problem can help reduce all the symptoms of scoliosis.
