@@sunfire65ph $400 SM7B, $150 focusrite interface (there are some better interfaces out there though, can’t say I’d recommend the focusrite), $120 for cloudlifter to get better volumes, $60 mogami XLR cables (probably could go cheaper and not notice a difference on the cables but I saw a video these are the best for fighting interference and I’m running them near a bunch of USB and power cables) and $100 Rhode boom arm sooo around $830 give or take.

Honestly there's a lot more out there than the SM7B, and frankly I find SM7Bs to be overrated. They're good mics, sure, but there's better for nearly half the price.

I own the Elgato Wave:3, the Rode Procaster, the Shure MV7 and the Shure SM7B. My favorites are the SM7B over XLR and the MV7 over USB. Nothing beats the smooth sound of the SM7B and i love the options i have with the MV7 and it's software. Although also the Rode Procaster sounds very nice in it's own way and also the Wave:3 over USB. I am tempted to buy the Rode PodMic too but it's lacking in the low end and that's not what i prefer.

Unless you have a deeper voice, in which case the SM7B could sound too muddy and boomy. But IMO the Rode Procaster is a better mic anyway, and costs less than the MV7. (unless you include the cost of an interface to go with it).

Hey there, Ed! Love the channel, full of good info. I've been blundering through audio exploration for a little bit, and may have tripped over an AT2020 at some point, but long story short, I haven't been able to use it much until recently when I finally got an audio interface. I planned to use the AT2020 for chatting with friends, on games, or perhaps potential narration work. But then I saw this video. So, my question (way past when I should've asked it) is: Can the AT2020 still work as a chat mic? Or have I gone way left field?

Apples and oranges mate. Dynamic and condenser mics are different leagues. Do some more research. Rode nt1a is good for a STUDIO with good soundproofing, since it will pick up ALL sounds in the room including frequency bounceback from walls. The podmic is a directional dynamic mic that can be used for performance and other live work because of the dynamics. So only get a condenser if your room is soundproofed, if not youre gonna be investing way more money.

@@hybridmajik an interface with at least 60db (audient id4 mk2 has 56 db it’s ok) . Not too much contender in this area: audient id4, id14, and SSL2 have very good low noise preamp and good ad converter. If you want a good result ad a fethead phantom ( much less pricy than cloud lifter, it’s direct inline so you don’t need an extra xlr cable). Zoom h6 is not too bad for field recording but get noisy real quick with gain up and fethead is not an option with it, you need it . If you have the money and want to enjoy the sm7b as a nice piece of gear go for it. Personally I sold it end buy mv7 because the ratio between price, ease of use, versatility and sound quality is far far better than the sm7b . If you only speak about sound quality of course sm7b is the king , but if you want it to be a proud king you have to assume the kingdom whitch it required 😂🤣😂 Sorry for my French.... but i am French ! The MV7 is versitile and offers great sound, even using the USB function. It's the one I use, and it has not done me wrong ever. If you don't want to get an interface, it's a really great mic and you can usually find a used one for under 200. If you're only interestedin using an XLR mic, and you have a budget to stay under, you can't go wrong with the Podmic. And if money is no object and you're wanting an XLR mic, then SM7B is the best there is, IMO.

People ask this question a lot, but it really depends on your voice. For someone who has a deeper voice, the Shure stuff can sound muddy and muffled. For someone with a higher voice, other mics could sound sibilant and harsh. There really is no perfect mic that suits everyone. But if you have a deep voice, I'd avoid deep sounding mics, and if you sound like Mickey Mouse snorting helium, then you might want one of the Shure products.

Is it me or were the plosives worse with the MV7 than with the PodMic? Not good since it already has a foam cover. The PodMic obviously has a built-in pop filter on the inside, but I wouldn't expect something like that to do the job of eliminating plosives (and it doesn't). As they are in your video, I would say the SM7B is the best with the PodMic coming in second and the MV7 coming in a pretty distant third. But I would say that all you would need to do is add a foam cover to the PodMic to bring it almost in line with the SM7B. Not bad for a mic that costs $300 less. Here's a link to a foam cover made specifically for the PodMic: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B088B66LJY/

SM7B's pop filtering abilities tend to be skewed when people do plosive tests because people get right up to the end of the mic to test for plosives, however the capsule on an SM7B is recessed rather deep behind front of the mic, so it's a few inches behind where the capsules on other mics tend to be when people do plosive testing, giving an advantage to the SM7B.

I think Michael Jackson's "Thriller" was recorded on the Shure SM7. The SM7B is an updated version of that with a few, rather small changes.

Yeah, that MV7 isn't going to last you 10 years. Guaranteed that Micro USB port stops working well before then.

I heard that you are supposed to speak to the side of the mic, not the end.

@@EdwardSmithMusic With traditional mics you talk into the top. I thought these mics are different.

@@Banmuyuan These are front address mics; you speak into the end. Some reviewers have told people to speak into the side (to reduce pop for those with poor mic technique, ie guests and new users) but it is not the design intent of these microphones.

Hi, do you think the Shure MV7 is a good microphone for singing(untreated room)? I recently bought a AT2020USB+, and the mic is capturing unexpected weird little noises. And I don't know how to avoid these noises.

The Shure MV7 is not good for vocals, but rather for voice over. If you are having acoustic treatment problems, this should be a quick fix to help - amzn.to/3h2yocl
