I worked in preservation of historical documents while putting myself through grad school. When he said William Blaeu my heart stopped. This is in incredible condition for not being properly preserved. Certainly whomever put it to that cardboard backing at minimum understood to use quality archival glues. I would certainly remove it if I were her, bring it to a map/document specialist and hold onto it because the collectible map market is only growing. Beautiful, fabulous find. I want it myself.

WCGwkf The problem is the glue. A good archival rice glue is good for hundreds of years, but this is glued to a piece of modern cardboard. This was a common practice from the mid 20th century, and usually done by framing shops. Often the glues used are toxic to the paper as they age. I have a drawing glued down in this manner around 1980, and over the decades the glue has started to turn the paper brown. In this case the paper is still in good condition and that could mean that the glue is okay, but it could also mean that it simply hasn’t been done long enough for any problems to show. With such a precious document I would not want to take that risk, because once you see the brown on the top it means that it has gone through all of the paper and the value of the item would start to plummet. As it is (without visible damage) the glue has taken $2,000-$4,000 off its value. Brown and deteriorating paper would take a lot more off. $1,500 seems a wise and logical investment to me. It also needs reframing in a museum grade matt board with archival attachment, which doesn’t cost very much, but contributes to value. To collectors buying, condition is everything, and if they think they will need to spend $1,500 with a conservator, they will try to knock at least 4 grand off the price. It is just like buying a car - buyer says “I’m gonna have to put it in a body shop to get rid of that scratch, and with a respray it will cost a fortune so I can only offer you...” Better to buff the scratch out and wax the car so the paint looks brand new.

they should investigate the glue by attempting to remove a tiny bit at the corner to see if it is composed of a substance that can over time cause damage. If the glue is deemed harmless then I would completely agree with you. It does not affect the display quality and might actually enhance it slightly though collectors generally prefer things in original condition. haI have a map from about the same time period that is larger and similarly engraved and hand colored. It was in a frame and displayed for a number of years where it was exposed to sunlight as a result the hand tinting of some of the colors has been sun damaged. But over all it looks pretty good though not as good as this one. I had a similar discussion regarding the lack of creases with someone but they told me they have encountered such maps that were rolled up as some would have been hung on walls. I bought mine in a thrift store convinced it was a cheap reproduction but after someone who collects maps saw it on my wall (a couple of weeks after I bought it) they suggested it was real and not a reproduction. I was shocked. I have the frame it came in but it did not have glass. The frame is a common type used for large maps roughly 100-150 years ago and has unfortunately been glued to that frame but I was able to remove it preventing further damage. It also had been damaged by some masking tape but that is relatively easy to fix. It is currently in an acid free cotton folder in a light proof container until I get a chance to have it properly framed behind UV filtering glass. I paid $8 for it. Based on what I have found out about this it is likely worth about $1500 (due to the damage) and looks awesome on the wall. I have found a number of old maps at thrift stores and that one is the nicest. I have an engraved map that is not tinted that was taken out of a British publication dated around 1785 depicting battle information in Massachusetts related to the Revolution. 8 or 9 years older and it would belong in a museum. I paid $1 at Goodwill and and actually bought it for the frame thinking it was a cheap reproduction but then I examined it and found it to be engraved on hand laid paper. Doing some research I found it was published by two different publishers one in 1784 and again by someone else in 1785 so I can't be sure which one hence my approximate date. Still very nice in the original frame. I have a nice nautical chart for Cape Cod waters that I got also in a frame and thought was a reproduction. It has the folds one expects and some damage but dates from 1897 and looks awesome on the wall in another frame I got that looks better. it fits perfect with my nautical themed parlor as do some of my other map finds.

Hi! they actually were aware from very early on how to map accurately. Other medieval maps that you may have seen were purposefully inaccurate to illustrate other things instead of geographical accuracy. For example, the Hereford Mappa Mundi was used to illustrate the world according to the Bible. It was also used to map time. Well worth some research if you are interested.

Problem is with these 2nd hand stores, they are now actually looking up the value of items and pricing them like you are shopping in Israel Sak!!! Bastards... and they got them as a free donation. 1640 was forty years after a group of Dutch businessmen founded the VOC (the East India Company) with regional headquarters in what is now Jakarta, Indonesia. You can see a fair bit of map detail in that region of SE Asia. You can also see the outline of Northern Australia. The Dutch had no interest in exploring there, as their focus was the spice trade and its riches.
