Great video as always! One more to add are the room sensors for the Ecobee thermostat. The newest sensors (the ones with the metal base), with the latest firmware upgrade, have now surfaced motion AND occupancy in HomeKit. This has been hugely helpful in lighting automations at my place as I have one in almost every room. Only downside is the timeout reset is verrry short snd there is no way to adjust it, so automations need Siri Shortcuts to wait before running the automation. If you have an ecobee, these sensors will help with your Gestión NC snd cooling AND be useful as motion and occupancy sensors.

I agree with the hue sensor, I designed and printed mounts for the corner of the ceiling so it can be neat and out of the way. Batteries last for about 3 years. Great that temperature and light levels are exposed.

I just added the Onvis motion sensor to my laundry room. So far, everyone in my family has found it helpful (there’s a lot of laundry with two kids in ton of organized sports!), but only if they are patient to wait those two seconds for BlueTooth transmission. I’ve also incorporated a 25% light level for when I go down in the middle of the night, as this room also houses our beverage refrigerator. So far, it’s all working well.

Great use for a motion sensor. The BLE delay is a bit of a bummer but more thread motion sensors on their way later this year!

Nice video. I'm a big fan of the Hue sensors. One idea for the bathroom/shower - you can use a door contact sensor and if the door is closed use a long time frame to turn the lights off, otherwise use a short one.

Hi, thanks for the video. I miss an information about the ability to remember the setup when changing battery. I own some Fibaro Motion Sensors, and I have programmed different values (no light flash when motion detected, temperature adjustment,...). But when I must change the battery, then all values are back to factory setup. What about this behaviour? Do the other sensors remember the setup after battery change?

What a comparison! I've got to say that when it comes to motion sensors, they've got to be connected to a hub for me. I've had the Hue motions sensors all throughout my house for the last 5 years and they worked flawlessly until the first battery change,. After that, they work when they want to. I've had zero issues so far with my Aqara motion sensors, but haven't had to change the batteries yet. Hopefully all goes well. Keep up the amazing work Brad!

Thank you Dustin! The speed that comes with using a hub makes a big difference, but I'm sure Thread enabled motion sensors will be here soon, so that will be fun to try. Thanks for watching!

Totally agree Brad, the Hue is my favourite. I have 7 indoor sensors and one outdoor sensor. Since day one they have worked flawlessly, and I get plenty of ooooohhhhss and aaaaaaahhhhsss when people walk through my downstairs area. I don’t use them upstairs yet. I have one in my garage also which has a 20 foot ceiling. Works no problem!

@@TheBradLloyd you had me thinking with occupancy sensors. I have ecobee window and or smart sensors in each room which are occupancy sensors also. Just testing out how they work to control lights. So far turning on is no problem, waiting to see how long it takes for the sensor not to detect occupancy.

Thanks for testing that out. I’ve only used the ecobee room sensors which IMO don’t work well for motion. I’d like to try their door sensors at some point. The Hiome products do look nice but man…. 💰 💰 💰

Hi Brad - I’ve been following your videos religiously since starting my smart home journey. So far I have invested in a mixture of Aqara and Philips….is there any benefit to getting any additional Hubs throughout a home, or does (let’s say) one Aqara sufficient for a small to medium home? Or is it beneficial to get a hub for downstairs, a hub for upstairs, and a hub for an outside building?
@TheBradLloyd
@TheBradLloyd 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Leigh, thanks for watching and sorry for the delay! For a small/medium home, 1 Hue hub should be just fine (it's fine for my 2450 sq ft home + basement). Though, if you are noticing signal issues, you could also add another hub. Same for Aqara, though I would say not as good of range as Hue. Though by using repeater devices like smart plus and light switches, you can extend the range. I would stick to 1 hub and only add more if needed. Hope that helps.

Regarding the shower….I wonder if you could use the Onvis’ humidity sensor to stall the timeout. Since the humidity would rise after the lights were triggered, I don’t know if it would be possible, but it’s an idea.
@TheBradLloyd
@TheBradLloyd 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting idea Ryan. Maybe possible. Easy enough to set a condition “if humidity is > x”. You could adjust the timeout and create separate automations for “when sensor stops detecting motion” based on the humidity. Worth trying out sometime!

Interesting video...I have the new EVE thread motion sensor and I've been fiddling with it for weeks. I do like that it responds very quickly because of the thread (less than a second it seems) but finding the right spot in my bathroom is a giant hassle (and EVE doesn't provide any guidance for setting it up.) Too close to the door and it goes off every time somebody walks by in the adjacent hallway, too far from the "throne" and it shuts off prematurely and needs a SIRI command to turn the lights back on. Most the time waving hands etc will not turn the lights back on if it decides to turn them off. Sometimes it just ignores its programming and the lights stay on until I tell SIRI to turn them off (grrrr). It does work well in terms of action on the amount of light (LUX level) and it does respond to turn on the lights quickly (I don't want guests guessing how to turn on the lights, I just want the lights to go on when they enter and turn off when they leave the room... (not during their visit!) Once (if ever) I get this thing to behave, I would love to use this function in other parts of my Homekit Home, but not until I can figure out this weird behavior. I wish EVE was more helpful, I've traded numerous emails with them but I still don't get it.

Hi Brad, great video! I picked up an Onvis motion sensor today. I'm finding that it gets stuck on "Motion detected" and then frequently stops responding all together after a few motion detections. I've tried resetting and re adding to homekit numerous times and confirmed the firmware is up to date. Am I missing something or do you think my sensor is faulty?
@TheBradLloyd

Sounds faulty to me. My two suggestions would be firmware update and resetting, which you have already done. I would check out the Eve motion sensor with thread.

So informative! QQ: can I mix and match products in the same room to create an automation? For example, turn on my lights connected to Lutron switches triggered by the Aqara motion sensor in my laundry room?

Yes, you totally can! My ensuite lights are on a Caseta switch and controlled by an Aqara motion sensor. As long as both the motion sensor and switch are HomeKit compatible you shouldn’t have any issues. Thanks for watching!

Do you know why they dont recommend rechargeble batteries? Cold it have something with NIMH are 1,2 volts and standard AAA are in 1,5 volts? I have read that the sensor can draw up to 1,5 volts. But are the batteries in a serie they give out 2,4 volts. But are they in parallell the Output 1, 2 volt.

I’ve started getting false positives from eve Motion sensor after a couple of days of using. False positives not about motion, but about no motion. Sometimes I get no motion detected transferred to homekit, even when eve app registers motion, or I get no signal transferred to homekit about no motion being detected. Considering the price of the device this is not acceptable.

How do get the Hue sensor to send a notification to wall mounted iPad (to wake it up). The Hue App seems to require you to add a light... I just want a notification so the iPad will open in Home Assistant. I've tried the examples on YT but my Hue App wants a fixture to turn on for some reason.

@@TheBradLloyd Agreed. We are continually making the case to our contractor customers to switch from conventional switch wiring methods to Caseta to save labor and materials and to offer unparalleled flexibility after the walls are sealed up and painted. Some balk at the wallbox device price, but Caseta is actually far less expensive when all costs are accounted for.
