As an electrician I have quite a few meters; I’ve found Fluke hard to beat especially with regard to their non-contact volt probe. I keep some cheap ones on hand, new in the packaging, from say HF to give to a friend or family member when they ask to borrow a meter. A little knowledge can get you in trouble and it’s easy to fry a meter or yourself if used incorrectly so I’m not loaning a $500 meter to someone to just get a sorry about that back. You can get some decent budget meters from Klein, Ideal, and AmpProbe that hold up quite well and don’t break the bank. When measuring most things today a True RMS meter is a must and with electrical work a clamp amp meter is a good thing to have. With clamp meters $100 should really be your starting point, and as you go up so do the features like also measuring DC amps. You should be looking at Cat3 and Cat4 levels the higher the level and volt rating typically signified a better built or better insulated/protected meter.

I am looking to test PC motherboards and old retro game console boards as well as small CR button batteries like those found on Gameboy games for internal saving. Would you recommend an expensive multimeter for more accuracy? Or should I just get something like the AstroAI you linked in the desc? Cheers!

If you are only using the meter to test batteries and simple circuits you will only need a basic meter like the one you mentioned. If you are testing complex circuits that include transistors and resisters you would benefit from spending more money. I get the impression that this would be your first meter. My suggestion is just get a basic meter first.

You do not need a license to buy a Professional meter. If a particular product of theirs products say ‘Made in the USA,’ they are, in fact, made in the USA. It is illegal to mislabel a product's “Country of Origin”. I am an Electrition in the UK, the cheep yellow multimeter you referred to as a hobbyist meter is fine for home use on main supply it will measure up to 750 V AC demestic instalations in the UK is 230 V AC Australia is 240 V AC so that meter will be fine, I have been using that same meter for 22 years and I have never had a shock or any problems with it, but I do agree with you on durability don't expect it last as long as mine has mine has been repaired twice since I first got it. Electricity can kill. As a member of the public I'm not informed of annual deaths due to electrical causes or failed equipment used in the maintenance of electrical goods. This type of info is important to me; what I can say with certainty is that cheap Chinese crap is flooding the market, and it comes with risks, e.g. copper wiring which is aluminum plated with copper, or poor rubber/ plastic quality (ie insulation), or the fraudulent use of CE on Chinese goods which one reasonably assumes to be an indication of European compliance but the same 2 letters, with the same font, is "conveniently" claimed to mean 'China Export'. Given the lifespan of a meter, the premium added to a known brand is worth the cost and risk.

This guy is 100% right I'm a first year apprentice electrician and I'm here to tell you Those cheap meters that you see on wish and banggood. Or garbage low volt only like maybe your car if you're lucky. Are they accurate to within a degree they are accurate. If you're not paying 50 to $100 for a meter don't bother. You're just buying garbage at this point. And look at the name brand and God forbid if you get it from China question It absolutely!!!!!!! And guys like this online who are out there to help you or pretty awesome take advantage of that. Cuz I go to school and I pay a tuition in college and work during the day as an apprentice and it ain't cheap. So anyone giving you advice like this online you might want to follow a little bit but do your background definitely on who's telling you what because not all the people on KZfaq are I call it the university of KZfaq I've got The correct information.

It's kind of scary that you can die from using a hobbyist meter. If you buy one for a simple car electronics diagnosis, you will likely have it sit around the house for years. At any point someone could pick it up and use it to test house electronics, unaware of the danger.

I wouldn't be too worried. I'm sure many people do test mains power with cheap meters. They are rated to carry out the task but the test probes that are supplied with cheap meters are not very durable.

99.99% of the people commenting here don't need 500-1000 USD of "Super accuracy". People have to calm down and stop buying things just because you can.

Clicked your "better" multimeter choice, it doesn't take me to a specific meter, just a page of different meters. Thank you for the vid, excellent. Cheers Edit: you've removed another post I had thanking you and asked for assistance and advice about 2 different MM from other stores, not "Amazon", you removed it, posted similar request for same advice, you removed that as well! I guess you'll remove this whole post as well and block me! I said absolutely nothing wrong! I'm asking you for help and you deleted both requests, unbelievable! Unsubscribing now!

Why cant they just make a meter that does it all? Tired of switching between meters all the damn time.. and explaining which meters are for what is just getting annoying.. fluke =hv and amp. Klein for auto range. And chinesium weng fung for ohm and capacitance... lol..

Totally Z Ack. Can be frustrating. Sadly meters have to be specialised fir the task they are designed for. If I find a meter that does everything I will let you know. It could make us very rich. HaHa!

"if your looking for a quality meter, buy a brand like Fluke" .....at this very moment, I stopped watching this Fluke ADVERTISEMENT. I'm guessing you only buy SNAP ON sockets for your Snap on ratchets. I'm not knocking Fluke one tiny bit. Fluke/Snap on/Mac....... Yeah, I get it. People watching are expecting a realistic meter. A basic, a better, and a relative equal to the high end meter brands. Why spend $600 for pride and bragging rights when go $175 to $275 you could buy something as accurate. .0000V difference is close enough for my OCD Why jump straight from El cheapo to Fluke as an example? Guessing $$$
