I can recommend the Synology rt2600ac. its wifi 5 not 6 but other than that it has all the "Prosumer" or "enthusiast" features a power user would love. :) I using it on my NBN HFC connection. No complaints. If you need a wifi extender for it then get a MR2200ac to go along with it. I got a MR2200ac but i did not need it. I use it for gaming and work.

7490 Fritz Box handles VoIP very well ( run 9 numbers) and believe Internode RSP still selling outright for $199. Now that it supports MESH a great feature. And Fritz Fon DECT phones sound magic in HD mode if connected to a compatible VoIP service.

Hey TMP, I notice your recommendation is a combined modem router, yet recommend separate modem and router components. Is there a TP-Link basic modem that has the same 10-30% link speed increase you have seen, then add own router?

Hey Pat! I currently am using an Optus supplied modem it's a Sagecom, I'm getting FTTC NBN connected to my unit this Wednesday & obviously want the best speeds that I can get. What modem out of the ones you mentioned in the video do you recommend for FTTC? Probably not practical to get the Netgear Modem even though it sounds unreal lol. Also one more stupid question does having a better modem increase speed if you're using Ethernet cables plugged into your PC?? Or does it only make Wi-fi better cheers!

I've been having WiFi issues with the Netgear Nighthawk D7800 which requires constant rebooting to fix. Unfortunately from my research Netgear are not even providing a solution for this. I do have over 25 devices connected so I am not sure whether this is a potential cause. However, I will be moving on to another modem router and I think your tplink recommendation might be a good start. Thank you.

Hi Pat - love your work . What is best router for FTTP which can support mesh booster . I understand I don’t need a modem as the NBN network device inside my study is the modem . Research has shown netgear orbi the best, but $700. Looking at TP link ax1500 with wifi6 (archer ax10) router and TP link mesh extended with wifi6 and one mesh compatibility . Total less than $300 and should be better than ISP mesh systems (Aussie broad band maybe )

I have iinet fibre to the home. and using the supplied TG1 modem. Average speeds are roughly about 90-95 MBPS even in the evenings. Apart from having serious issues wit iinet. I was wondering if I should upgrade the modem. I have the Opticon box with a splitter or as the Red Train tech called it a switcher ( I think its just a router) that supplies a data socket to every room in the house. Then a the TG1 modem in my room. I also have a land line that I NEED for my alarm system with this setup. What would you recommend I do, if I want to upgrade to something much better than the stock TG1. I wish I could just change provider but my area is serviced ONLY by iinet, iprimus, Aftel, Ascensa, Exetel, Fuze Net all of which get their Fibre from RED TRAIN. So I guess it doesn't matter who I go with as they all use RED TRAIN. And all reviews are the same for all the mentioned ISP's. PAthetic.

I've always preferred to have separate modem and router setup as it's the best guarantee for high speeds. I'm on FTTN with Aussiebroadband. I'm from overseas and the VDSL technology is what we had in Europe 10y ago :p At this moment I have a Netcomm NF-18ACV in bridge mode and an Asus RT-AC86U router handling all network trafic (incl NAS fo media and private cloud storage) With this combo (and good copper I guess) I measure speeds of 48 Down/18 Up on a NBN50 plan. I've tested several routers and I prefer working with Asus. My whole traffic goes through a VPN and the RT-AC86U has a hardware AES-256 encryption chip on board. The VPN connection is set up on the router, which has been upgraded with Asuswrt-Merlin and I hardly have any speed loss.

problem is if have vdsl since before 1993.. NBN in a nut shell is the aggregation link for vdsl, however fttc gives the option of wan linking upto 10Gb though no guarantee on how the copper will last..before it degrades enough to the point.. it nis unusabke the moratorium is still out on how 100/40 will last before you have to replace with fiber optic.. though I do know for 4g-lte-a to be feasible we're looking towards POE based powering systems and the service it all current options in place is a work around for use.. though at present we're either looking pentanet as a secondary service option or 5g/4glte as a service option as wireless service.. though even with 1Gbit wireless in play I can't see this increasing any time soon due to the limitations in POE what you have been talking about in VDSL hardware we have known about and been in use since 1991 .. USB dongle attached 4g services has been known about for over the last 20 years or more

Hello there, would you be so kind to make a new video about Routers and give us your opinion between your best choice "TP Link Archer VR900", the "TP-Link Archer C4000", the "D-Link DIR-X5460 and the EXO"? I ask this because, first, I will probably move to a place that has FTTC; secondly, if I'm willing to by a TP-Link Archer C4000, does it make more sense to buy directly a "D-Link TAIPAN - AC3200 Ultra" (is there a significante difference between D-Link DIR-X5460 or higher and the D-Link TAIPAN - AC3200 Ultra). No modem or router has a feature that would actually improve your gaming ping / performance, most use a type of QOS and tag it as a gaming feature, and it only kicks in during heavy use by others that might slow you down. I would go with the one that gives you the best internet performance and any other features that you would actually use, ignore the fancy colours and look.

I feel your pain, my net was broken for 7 months. I was getting 100-40mbs/s then one day it went to 100/0.7mb/s. After countess techs from Telsta and the NBN coming to look and try to fix the issue, Telstra blames NBN, and NBN blames Telstra. Then they thought must be modem, so they sent one, still same issue, and here's the best part though. They then sent another and if that's not enough they send 2 more after that!, They send me 4 modems and tried to send a 5th, after 4 it stops being funny. So I told them i was done with them. I had to terminate my contract early they wanted $800 because they told me not to pay my bill until the issue was sorted, then that way they could $0.00 the outstanding balance, so i wasn't paying for a service i wasn't getting. I got them down to $200 just for the modem (the original one i got in the contract.). It was an absolute nightmare, never again will i go with Telstra. Useless would be a compliment for them. Worse company i have ever experienced in my life, customer service to a joke and their staff are 5 times worse then that, and Im not even exaggerating. Honestly. My advice would be to opt out with them. Dam, o.k rant's over :)

@Xsjado1JZ
@Xsjado1JZ 5 жыл бұрын
@@mr_eee you could always disable WiFi on the Optus supplied modem/router (bridge or WAN bypass so it functions as purely a modem, but not 100% sure sorry) and run your own router but the Optus modem would still handle the VDSL2 connection and VOIP. Some smart cookies on Whirlpool managed to find a way to extract the VOIP info from Optus modems but that is beyond my abilities. Easiest option would be to ditch Optus all together and sign up with an RSP who will release VOIP details freely (such as Aussie Broadband).

@Xsjado1JZ
@Xsjado1JZ 5 жыл бұрын
Yes you can, this was a poorly researched video lacking clarity and information. For HFC, FTTP, FTTC and Fixed Wireless you only need a router with a WAN port as the NBN supplied equipment is the modem. You could also run a modem/router in bridge or bypass mode disabling the modem functionality. The one consideration is particular providers won't release VOIP details essentially forcing you to use the RSP supplied equipment.

I think your research is lacking. FTTP, FTTC and Fixed Wireless all have an NBN supplied modem (as with HFC that you have already mentioned), I'm not sure why you make out HFC to be the exception. All of these services only require a router and not a modem/router combo like you have constantly mentioned.
@TechManPat
@TechManPat 5 жыл бұрын
I emphasise that because the hfc modem is not wall mounted and can be removed easily unlike the other two. But also most modem router combos work with FTTH etc and don’t require as much thought to buying.

@@TechManPat FTTC NCD also isn't secured to the wall. The way you describe it makes it sound as if you require a modem/router combo for all technologies aside from HFC. Personally for FTTN/B I prefer the use of a Netgear DM200 VDSL2 modem (Broadcomm chipset which works well with the DSLAM) and an ASUS RT-AC68U which will work as a router on all technologies.
