Nothing gives me more joy that community theatre making magic out of nothing, and one of the best places to look for that is #Shrek, a #musical with huge budgety gimmicks that high school & community #theaters are left to figure out a reasonable solution. Theatre is so scrappy and crafty, and all these people made it work and told a really rad story! [Check bottom of description for links to all the theatres!]

You think that’s weird- you should see the discount Beast costumes from the various productions of Beauty and the Beast- or the many many versions of Milky White from community and high school productions of Into the Woods.

I've seen recordings of various community & high school theatre productions of Little Shop of Horrors here on KZfaq. Some of the Audrey II puppets are pretty ambitious & impressive for what they were made for. One was seriously big, big enough to loom over the actors & gobble them whole!

Reminds me when we did the hobbit. We build smog... I had to be the left wing. We showed him and all the hobbit puppets off at a multi-school awards thing. And over heard the local art school students saying they wish they could do stuff like that. ( this was before the first lord of the rings movie was coming out, so Yea..years ago. ).. I might have one picture and some of the "skin" in a scrap book, but man if I could find a video I would share it.

My brother's school did Shrek during his senior year and he got the main role, so I spent hours looking at costumes like these. I knew instantly which costume was about to be shown the minute he said something about The Great Gazzo. You also would never expect for it to be such an issue, but the helmet Shrek wears in the play has to be custom made to have hollowed out horns to cover his ears. My brother's theater teacher tried to set him up with an old knight helmet with no modifications the week before, but that straight up would not work. Had to build the thing from scratch. If you look at other productions, there's quite a few that look like buckets. I remember seeing one kid who had one that looked like a hollowed out CRT TV on his head. It's a prop that just kind of hits you out of nowhere if you're not paying close attention since it's specially made.

I remember years ago there used to be a whole group of tumblr blogs dedicated to the...let's say "less than perfect" community/high school theatre costuming and prop attempts for various shows - there was one for Audrey II puppets from Little Shop of Horrors, one for Beasts from Beauty & The Beast, one for Milky White from Into The Woods, and I'm sure there were more of them but those were the three I used to spend all my time looking through. Though I prefer this kind of format since it's obvious Dan isn't just mocking them for the sake of it which it occasionally felt those blogs were. I know it's not exactly Disney or theme park related but I'd love to see more vids on low budget costuming.

when i was younger i used to do theatre. my big role was the cowardly lion in the wizard of oz. it was a store bought lion costume with a fuzzy jumpsuit and a headpiece of the mane/ears. it wasn't a bad costume. the problem was the face paint that quickly began to melt due to the heat of the costume *plus* performances being in the middle of august. i looked like i was the wicked witch of the west from the way i was melting... i remember right as we were heading to dress rehearsal, another cast member stepped on my tail and the crew had to safety pin it back on. so i couldn't turn around at all during the show otherwise you'd see a giant safety pin on my behind lmao. those were the days

I costumed A Midsummer Night’s Dream for community theater and trying to figure out how to do Bottom’s donkey head was a bit of a challenge. I ended up lucking out by finding a remnant of gray upholstery fabric at JoAnn’s, so I ended up making Bottom a hat out of the fabric and then making a donkey head by making another hat of the same fabric and sewing on ears and a nose that I put floral wire in to make the ears stand up and the nose bend. I knew it only had to look good from super far away because we performed at an amphitheater in a park, but it didn’t look too bad up close. I did watch it like a hawk when it was backstage.

At my highschool we recently did a production of Shrek. And I was blessed with the great opportunity to wear a ungodly amount of latex. The strangest thing though, was the fact that the stuff we got to stick everything to my skin just wouldn’t work. So we decided to literally DUCK TAPE THE PROSTHETIC TO MY HEAD. So every night after curtain call, I would have to carefully cut off the duck tape being extra careful not to casually slit my throat. Worst thing was too the duck tape was about 4 shades lighter than the prosthetic we bought, so it kinda looked all off lol. But it was a really fun show to do, so I’m fine looking past the annoying costume lmao.

I've always loved Shrek because he's Scottish like myself and the first movie was a huge part of my childhood. The second I saw the Shrek in a kilt I knew you were going to wonder if he was a "true Scotsman", and now that thought is going to haunt me 😂 I have seen a Shrek with a kilt at Glasgow comic con before and when someone asked what was under his kilt he gleefully lifted it up to flash a pair of boxers with the Scottish flag on them. So apparently Shrek does not rock tighty whiteys but Saltire boxers.

While I’ve never been a part of Shrek, I have done The Little Mermaid. That. Was. Pure. Chaos. First of all, the day before opening night, all of our fans broke. So we were all dying during the show. (We did this in May) Second, everyone’s mic malfunctioned except for mine. If that ain’t lucky idk what is. Third, the week before opening night a whole new scene was added. (For King Triton making Ariel human) We didn’t know what to do for this so the curtains just closed and Sebastian and Flounder (me) told some jokes. And then there were our costumes. King Triton had a muscle suit, I was covered in glitter, Sebastian had the most over-the-top costume you’d ever seen, and the background characters were just wearing colored t-shirts. But wait! There’s more! Almost every show we would be missing either the dinglehopper or the snarfblat. And we broke the Kiss the Girl boat… twice. But overall the show was really fun to be a part of! Even though it wasn’t perfect, it was still really fun!
