Due to the popularity of My original Tripods Tribute Video which was in pretty poor quality I have decided to create an upscaled best of video using the best source available and run through the Tapaz AI Enhancement tool. Enjoy

Glad it wasn't, actually. I saw it when I was younger and, even though the CGI was crude in comparison to today, thought it was the bee's knees, now it's stilted and acted, in these clips, as woodenly as The Woodentops. Maybe today, with a better script, graphics and actors, it would go 3 or series. Maybe.

Too true. I never read the books at school except for Trillions by the same author. I did read them in my 39s because series 1 was released by BBC video then we had 5 years no second series on DVD. By put series 2 came with a caveat it came as a double disc set so you had to buy it regardless of already owning series 1. Yes it was a shame it was never finished but the cost was just to tremendous at that time. All they did was have an announcer read out the synopsis of what series 3 would have been, it was interesting that most of the blue screen special effects were done during the night time whilst the weathermen weren’t using the software to record the weather reports..The weathermen had some sophisticated software for the time.

@@chrismaguire3667 It wasn't CGI. It was physical effects with models and life sized props such a feet and claws and CSO. With a few very basic computer graphic shapes here and there.

This scared the shit out of me when I was a little boy. Gave me the most awesome, yet terrifying dreams. It was fab! The books since became some of my favourite books.

God bless the BBC. Adapt the first two books of a trilogy to the screen, and then decided you can't be bothered to do the third one!

I think the ratings were poor after series 2, if I remember rightlly, so they scrapped it.

It was costing them too much to make. With limited CGI in the 1980s (they literally had to use the weather map computer for the SFX). The third series would have doubled the buďget and apparently required filming on location in Spain where a site was to double up as the Panama Canal. They also needed to superimpose balloons with rebels dropping bombs on the Tripods from above. Easy to do in these heedy days of CGI but not so easy back then.

John Christopher was one of my favourite writers when I was a kid. He could conjure such a thick atmosphere in his stories. Especially in The City of Gold and Lead. The BBC should have another go at the trilogy. Modern special effects would really bring it to life for a new generation.

Legend has it Michael Grade cancelled season 3 (which would have been even more expensive than 2) to guarantee the budget for hundreds of episodes of Eastenders. Judge for yourselves if 'Enders is high quality drama as he put it!

I wish they had spent more on the effects instead of putting things in the series that were never in the novels. John Christopher's books are really good and I think this series should have been made accurate to the books.

This is how they should've done War of the Worlds, instead of the dross we got. If the BBC could do this in the early 80's on a limited budget, why couldn't we have gotten a decent movie?

Well according to the beeb, Little And Large (or was it Cannon And Ball?) was trouncing Tripods in the ratings 🤔!! The beeb could've moved Tripods in the schedules so as not to clash but nope.

The people running the BBC didn't understand the value of it and didn't feel it was worth it to continue with a third series, considering the ratings to them weren't as high as they wanted them to be for this kind of expensive project.

Funny as it sounds, everything Sci-Fi is a hard sell in the TV/broadcasting world. Then an now. I remember working on shows that never lasted longer than their pilot...or worse, their conception phase.

Good enough adaption. I think I liked the books better. Some extensive usage of a Quantel Paintbox to do all those composite shots of the models; the very same ones used on Doctor Who at that time. Random trivia: SFX/VFX veteran Ron Thornton (of Blake's 7, Captain Power and Babylon 5 fame) worked on this show as a model builder.

If you want to know why we will never get the tripods back Its because BBC sold the rights to Disney and we all know how Disney treats their own IP, they couldn't get STar wars to be the best film in a decade. Fact: MCU, Lucasfilm are ruined by Disney They have other IPs like Tron, Duck Tales, Flight of the Navigator blackhole Black Cauldron pentalogy series that they Choose NOT to revive it and make it better

I believe that Spielberg bought the rights to this series before making War of the Worlds. I guess to avoid any copyright infringement...

Really enjoyed the books, but the TV show diverged so much from the source material that they should probably have called it something else. (Same goes for the Changes Trilogy by Peter Dickinson, anothrr favourite of mine which also recieved a less-than-faithfull Beeb adaptation with the same dodgy 'Doctor Who' special effects.) It would be great to see this brilliant sci-fi adventure tale faithfully adapted, with just enough modern CGI to make the Tripods believeable, and keeping the British / Alpine settings, but apparently Disney now own the rights to all of Sam Youd's stuff so chances of that are very slim :(

You're not meant to notice that they couldn't, and that if they tried, especially the scenes where the feet are very slowly coming down. They they'd be so busy picking up their own fallen over comrades, that they'd have no time left to start terrorising us.

hi very right i know the audio for the last lot done i know when the 2nd lot came out they were losing money at the time so they did not make the rest they would not leave in hanging like this if it was remade there was a poor copy going around of the 2nd lot for some years i pleased at last bbc put it on to dvd at last remake i just don't think they will do it as they sold alot of the rights of to you know who and they are cutting back i know STARGATE may be back very soon and see what they do with it and with the age of the poeple getting alot older now

Because the human race had been brainwashed by the invaders to believe that the capping ceremony was a rite of passage into adulthood and something to be proud of. When in fact the caps were used to keep the human race docile, compliant and unable to develop technology that would potentially overthrow the invaders. The books go into the whole capping ceremony and how the caps are used as mind control. Likewise the prologue goes into the evolution of the caps and how the invaders initially became to control the human race.
