To mentally escape the Hell that is Wisconsin winter, the gang watches three films from 1987 that all take place in warm climates: the Rambo knockoff Deadly Prey, the Andy Sidaris action classic Hard Ticket to Hawaii, and the recently rediscovered Miami Connection.

Thanks for sharing Miami Connection. Been working at a Deli for like 8 months and this guy with a high pitched voice yells back to my coworker "see ya"; I thought something about the sound of him was familiar. It hit me after thinking about it, he sounds like Oh My God guy from Miami Connection. Ask the lady who has been serving him for years what his name is. Look up the cast of Miami Connection, same first name as the customer, wut. Text lady I work with at 10 oclock at night, send her link of Oh My God scene. 90 percent sure its him. She calls him Hollywood next time she sees him, he says what, how did you know. She credits me, and gives me his business card. I call one day and he gives me a signed printout poster and talks with me about Miami Connection for like an hr, cool guy. Lots of insight and laughs.Gives me a downloaded bluray of it a month later signed to my biggest fan, accidentally became his biggest fan, sweet. He comes around often, but never would have known who he was without Red Letter Media.

Funny thing about Demolition Man is that it might've predicted the future. Demolition Man's 100% PC culture actually seems possible now, with how pussified the world is now, whereas when the movie came out, people found that idea absurd and laughable. I hope it never actually gets to the point of getting a citation for cursing, or VR fucking being the only fucking. Also, god help us if it ever gets to the point that we have to use the 3 seashells.

That poster can't be from the original release. It's too self aware, and a great job by the distributors. Does anyone know if there was a poster for the theatrical release? Or if it showed up for rent? I think the answer to the 2nd question, is no because a copy would have surfaced by now. I wonder who the ebay seller was? A theatre owner, a collector, part of the o.g. crew? So many questions. Any answers out there? Cheers from Canada

@@steveharvey2102 - From the information I can find it only got a brief release at 8 theaters in Orlando, done on YK Kim's dime. Someone at Alamo Drafthouse bought a 35mm copy on eBay and distributed it decades later, I'm guessing it never actually had a poster before then.

Josh's confused grimace at 35:32 is still one of the most hilarious BOTW moments to me all these years later. He's usually so chipper and chatty, but that's a rare moment where he's completely bemused and at a total loss of words. Along with Jack, he's usually the one who understands what's going on in these terrible movies the most, but "Miami Connection" was too inexplicable for "the Wizard." He's reacting like he just walked in on Gregor Samsa turning into the giant insect.

Though I know Miami Connection is just a (un?)forgettable B-movie flick, as I'm Korean, I can see what was going on in the Asian guy's (who's co-directed and wrote this shlock) mind, because he's Korean, too: insane rivalry about practically anything about Japan (that's why movie's main villain is ninja, and one of the theme song is called "Against the Ninja"); devotion to parents (that explains why the Black guy cries and acts hysterically about the parents' letter); desperate attempts to be recognized as KOREAN worldwide, whether the foreign people cares or not... Those are the (quite nationalistic, I admit) frequent motifs that you could find in Korean fictional works or any of the cultural artifacts. They're today less frequently met in there (because the nationalism is not "in" anymore, particularly between the younger people), but when I was little (80's and 90's), those things were quite rampant - almost inescapable. I think this Taekwondo master is a product of its time. Well, at least, he tried and I completely respect that. (especially when I found out he practically was bankrupted due to the movie's failure) But it's also true that he's obviously a horrible translator of Korean cultures into American cinema; and budgetary problem, practically know nothing about how to make a movie, and he didn't have much charms neither as Bruce Lee nor as Jackie Chan - and, last but not least, just blindly following his own country's fad (nationalism) in a foreign country whose people didn't know anything about it.

@ilshyf
@ilshyf 2 жыл бұрын
@@xtzyshuadog Thanks for the comment! Well, first of all, Miami Connection and Burning are entirely different beasts, so it's a little tricky to answer here. But anyway. The latter was a critical darling and I think it DOES deserve. The director, Changdong LEE, is one of the most critically acclaimed director in South Korean movie history and he is rightly so. What I found in Burning is that this movie follows much closely and intelligently international arthouse's trend - being blunt, realistic AND fantastic at the same time. I find my impression confirmed specially when I had found the movie is based on Barn Burning, a short story of Haruki Murakami in 1983 which draws its inspiration from 1938 William Faulkner's short story "Barn Burning" - hence Lee's film title clearly is referenced to. All the characteristics which are miles away from Miami Connection apparently... Miami Connection is to me an "orphen" (pun intended) just like the black guy in the movie - the movie was made in English and in America with so many ideas which however are completely out of place there. I tell ya, while Changdong Lee is one of the best translator of Korean cultures into an international film language, J.K. Kim of Miami Connection is NOT.

Fun fact - the black dude in Miami Connection is Maurice Smith, an MMA legend who went on to compete in some of the earlier UFC's and made a name for himself by winning against Mark Coleman. Couldn't believe that was him in this movie. Small world. I guess he has some other acting credits, too??? Shit's crazy.

That shot at 19:15 of how the guy is outrageously freaking out about a snake on a plane 20' away from him is totally me any time I see even a tiny snake anywhere near me. LOL. I have a totally unreasonable fear of snakes that I can't do anything about no matter how hard I try. It makes living in the woods in Florida kind of loaded with anxiety.

So, Y.K. Kim has also published a book. It's... interesting. It's a martial arts instructional book but it also has some crazy messages in it that border on religious rhetoric. Everyone that appears in Miami Connection is featured in the book too. The pictures in the self defense section are especially choice.

_First Blood_ isn't really "action shlock" as Jack suggests (although its sequels are). Rambo doesn't even kill anyone in the first movie. The film itself is a commentary on post-traumatic stress and the treatment of Vietnam veterans by American society.
