He sands to remove rusty patches, primes and paints with Johnstones paint, but is it as good as the Hammerite paint used previously?

Thanks for this review. Glad I watched to the end, otherwise I would have bought the Johnstones.

To be honest the Johnstones isn't that bad, If I had prepared the area better I think the result would have been better. It still is very white 4 months later, which is pretty good in my opinion. If it had a rust preventer built in it would be a much more useful product. Thanks for commenting. And let us know what paint you use and the results.

I'm glad I found your video I was dithering about buying the Johnstone's paint as the Hammerites is out of stock locally but based on your video I hold off until i can find it. I'm not a fan of Johnstone's paint as I always find them messy to use and tend to leave a poor finish. Thanks once again for your video.

Just done my rad. Best bet is to close valves and take rad off. I cleaned mine with wire brush, screwdriver, 80 grit sand paper. I then used Kurust to neutralise the rust. Sprayed a two primer coats and then sprayed two coats of radiator paint. Looks good now but in hindsight I would have used non spray radiator paint and rollered last coat on as I like the orange peel look.

Great review. Try using a rust cure product, often used on restoring cars. It converts the rust to something benign.

Thanks Charles. I am planning to do this again when the weather gets better and we don't need the radiators on all the time! I will try some kurust or similar, i'll try and record the process and see how it turns out.

You might be able to use a rust converter like vactan. I've used it on the underside of a mower and is awesome. It doesn't like heat, though, so not good for stoves etc. A radiator might be OK, though, as not direct heat like a stove.

@@mikesunboxing It's really good because it is like a rubber type texture that makes the rust inactive then blocks it to the environment for moisture so good for a bathroom radiator. I'm going to try it and then paint with a radiator paint - probably gloss. Thanks. You can only get it on eBay. They use it in the marine industry a lot I've heard.

I use hammerite radiator gloss paint I noticed straightaway it's more runnier thinner yes I did spend a good few minutes stirring paint it will most likely need 2 coats 16 hours apart only thing is I can't turn off hallway radiator as it turns all radiators off I'd have used some cure rust treatment on that rust

Regarding the rust I noticed a small patch on bottom edge at back of radiator only reason I noticed it is cos I felt it as I was trying to clean old fluff from bottom and I had a look using a mirror and torch so I went out and bought some Kurust and yup even nail polish remover now before anyone says somet hilarious I have a plan to see if it's gonna help remove old gloss from around edge of where rust meets edge of old gloss if that don't then I'm breaking out my p60 sanding paper and even a wire wheel Dremel type tool and small wire brushes which are meant to be for cleaning paint brushes paint brush combs we shall see how it goes what's worst that could happen

Looks a nice finish to me I'm assuming that if the radiator paint is water based then it's not gonna have a strong smell
@mikesunboxing

I rushed it a bit to be honest, if i had prepped it better i would have got a much better result. The rust wasn't dealt with so it came back through after a while. I may give it another go, although the cost of a replacement is probably not much these days. I think i'll wait for the warmer months before i tackle it again.

Not surprised the rust is coming through to be honest, I can’t see how a water based paint can possibly be suitable for use on a rustable metal... the water in the paint will cause even good metal to rust almost immediately I’d have thought!!

your better of just buying trade paints johnstones trade paints are very good your be better of spending that extra 10 20 quid. I haven't used hamerite but I believe that's on the trade catorgry if it is that's not really a fair comparison. for metal primers I would if I can use a oil based primer much better coverage more durable and water based undercoat and gloss or satin with a alkyd resins stronger than acrylics for rads I would normally use johnstones trade water based undercoat gloss or satin which have alkyd resin from oil based paints.
