If you are mechanically inclined and can afford the car then they are no problem to fix and maintain. I'd rather fix a bmw than a audi any day. Merc are so so when it comes to working on. But the bmw is the easiest of then 3, and would argue with proper maintenance it would either be the bmw or merc that is most reliable.

new rod bearings do not eliminate the problem. the tight tolerances will kill the new rod bearings and dont forget about the vanos and the gearbox

Cars&Roads UK I what OP meant by replacing the rod bearings is so that it doesn’t explode on you right after u own the car. After replacing the rod bearings, you can at least drive the car for 40k miles without having to worry about replacing rod bearigs

I’m pretty happy with my 2002 E39 M5...

@Mick's Budget Rigs my GF owns a M5 E60 and been nothing but problems, she got it for dirt cheap, $4500 with less than 50K on clock cuz gearbox failed and vanoss had let go and needed A LOT of work and when she totaled up the cost of getting new trans/rebuilt, rebuild on vanoss and entire oil system, and all the other little things including new water pump and new computer, total set her back $15K.. so about $10,000 repairs...we even spoke to prior owner after bough it off a car lot for that price...the guy was (is) a doctor and traveled on highway a lot, no very heavy foot or abusive driver from what we could make out and actually told us that prob twice the cost of the car in repirs he had BMW do while while they still covered it under initial warranty... since initial rebuild of her car it has failed 3x since and has just over 160K on it now.. current issue according to the infotainment screen is the clutch is overheating, and shifts like complete shit in automode like slams into gear very hard.... our mechanic friend has checked it out and concluded that clutch actually isnt problematic but couldn't source the problem out its in the computer or in the wiring possibly, weirdly in manual mode the clutch overheating issue never appears and shifts while lazy and delayed are smooth (yes even on fastest setting its sluggish), only happening in automatic mode where it slams and says its overheating.. so we been driving it in manual mode for last few months which is fine since got paddles and dont live or work in the city..

He also used to be a mechanic for Mercedes and he himself says that the transmission and the engine in this car ate bulletproof and well... except the suspension which is expensive to fix

The m113k is a very good Motor . We own the 112k w203 and 113k E55 550hp. The decision was against E46 M3 and E60 M5, both great, more iconic Cars, because they are in Germany used much higher priced and more expensive to maintain.

Peter Hert I would love to own an e55 in the future but I’m worried that it will be too late cause I’m only 17 and some time will pass until I will be ready to afford it. This car is so nice because it’s comfy as it is an e class and then you got that monstrously sounding supercharged V8

Anyone who has the money to buy this car and deal with it's gas milage also has the money to upgrade the road bearings + throttle actuators preventively for $3k...when you think about it it's a small price to pay (considering it's a 500 HP luxury saloon)to be worry-free.

I have an S8 from 1998. It's big, it's comfy and it's quick. The all wheel drive keeps it glued to the road and it's got a full length Milltek to give it a lovely V8 roar. It does 0-60 in about 5.9 seconds and the engine and box are still sweet at 140,000 miles. The only complaint is that it could do with a 6th "cruising" gear as 5th gear isn't very tall and it's doing about 3000 rpm at 75-80 mph. But who cares? It sounds amazing.

If it lasts a few hundred miles 😂
