Hi friends! I've loved reading aloud to my kids, and wanted to share all the wonderful books we have read over the past few years. Please comment with any additional books you think we might like!

We started with Storypirates podcast and moved on to Junie B Jones audio books and she has opened up more and more to audiobooks. Then we began Stuart Little, Mr. Popper‘s Penguins, and Charlie the chocolate factory. We also added Princess in black audio books. I really like the idea of connecting the read aloud to some of the stuff we’re doing so I’m planning on doing some of the treehouse adventures in connection with the place, and I like the idea of the australian book you mentioned.

Thanks for some good recommendations! My daughter loved The Trumpet of the Swan by EB White. One we read recently that she really liked was The Kingdom of Wrenly. It’s a series but we have only read the first one so far. Your older kids might like it because the main character is a boy but his best friend that joins in all his journeys is a girl.

I have been working on a video of our favorite read-alouds too! So fun to see that some of them are the same, and a few you mentioned I will have to check out! (Bears on Hemlock Mountain sounds like something my kids would like.) We are in the middle of The Mouse and the Motorcycle now. I also have a tendency to read some bigger/older books to my kids. We listened to some of the Narnia books on audiobooks in the car, which was fun. Have you heard of The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place? It is my absolute favorite and best on audiobook for the narration in the English accent.

We love doing read-alouds together in our homeschool! We've read a good number of these...but I didn't even realize that My Father's Dragon was part of a trilogy! How did I not know that?

Seven In All I’m so glad you have read them - it is such a fun age group to read aloud! We’ve only started the 2nd in the My Fathers Dragon trilogy, so I’m not sure how they are - but we loved the first!!

Hey! Love your channel! I have a 4.5yo, 2.5yo, and 1yo. I love reading aloud, but find that if I'm reading chapter books then there is a steep decline in the amount of picture books we are reading (which obviously my two youngest enjoy those most). How you do squeeze in various types of reading (chapter books, picture books, poetry, school books, etc). I think part of it is just the stage the younger two are in - i can't just continue reading with my 4yo and let them wander away bc of safety reasons. i used to read over meal times but there were other table things we've been working through..maybe we are entering a season where thats possible again, but would love to hear your reading routine! :)

It can be tricky - the good thing is that everything changes so much at those ages! We still read picture books, but I do it during the toddler "school" time while the 6 and 5 year old do their chores ... and if they are fast they can sit in on the picture books. I do try and pull in some seasonal picture books during morning time, which is also when I read our read aloud! Some days I am able to read more than other days - it just depend how distracted I can keep the toddlers. They do pretty well with playdough or markers at the table but I do let them wander into the playroom which is just off our dining room, so I can still hear them! Hope that helps! Keeping my toddlers busy is my number one challenge in homeschooling - its no joke!

Oh, "The Mouse and the Motorcycle"! I remember loving this book when I was a kid. (Though I can't remember the details.) We may still have the old copy somewhere... if it hasn't crumbled into dust by now.

Science Mama we’ve started Charlie and the chocolate factory before bed and they’ve done OK with a short chapter at a time, but I’m hoping to start reading more at a time. You actually motivated me to try again today and we read a Charlie chapter AND 3 chapters in a new magic treehouse book we got in the mail!

TheTrautFam That is awesome! My kids have gotten better at read aloud time - I think it was just practice! AND I’ve also started to try and read the books with lots of excitement and voices - they think it is so funny 🤣
