4 жыл бұрынI've got a really exciting stack of read aloud books to share with you in today's video. I'm planning to read to my 5 year old Kindergartner and my 6.5 year old 1st grader! Have you read any of these books or do you have any that you would recommend??

That "Egyptian Journal" sounds really cool! I really, really enjoy the Penderwicks! It feels like a new classic.

Thank you for such lovely vlogs. My kids are adults and as they were growing up we did chapter books before bed. Our favourites would be old now but lovely. We loved Dick king Smith our favourite was Friends and brothers. Anne fine the diary of a killer cat was funny . My daughter loved the Bel Mooney books It’s not fair and other Kitty books ....... and My Naughty little Sister and the tales of Pipi longstocking by Astrid Lindgren my son loved The wreck of Zanzibar by Michael Morpurgo and the Butterfly lion though he was about nine when we read them. Sharing and enjoying books together is very special. When I volunteered at a school library I found kids would often request books by authors that their teacher were using in end of day story time.

Diana Chen We actually have Trumpet of the Swan, I just keep forgetting about it! I’ve also looked up the Green Ember series and it looks so good - are there any scary parts?

Science Mama not that I remember. We are on the last book now. We are a no electronics family so my kids play pretend a lot. They are always pretending to be the characters.

Love this we are doing ancients so I will check out a few of your picks! The wild robot 🤖, Henry Huggins, and the mystery of the Egyptian scroll for ancient Egypt we have been reading.

So many of those sound great! My daughter loves adventure or animal stories. She still talks about The Trumpet of the Swan and we read that several months ago.

We own The Trumpet of the Swan - I just keep forgetting about it! You know it was a good book when your kids are still referencing it! My kids still do that with The Wild Robot series :)

I have a gentle child who loves the growly books and the very very far north. I've heard Heartwood hotel is good too.

We are currently reading Poppy and it is a huge hit. So excited for you guys to read it. I’m not sure why I never thought to add Mary Poppins to our list, but I will be now! I’ll also be adding the Penderwicks, thanks for the suggestions and video.

Thank you for you’re suggestions! Im definitely going to check some of these out! I have a 3, 5, 6 year old and we just finished both “Here’s a Penny” by Carolyn Haywood and “Little Pear” by Eleanor Frances Lattimore. And my kids really enjoyed listening to the stories! I also really enjoyed them myself. They’re just cute stories of everyday life and the innocent adventures they have.

Science Mama yes! Well we read my fathers dragon, but not the bears on hemlocks mountain. For my fathers dragon the kids I think followed well and liked looking at the pictures. I personally thought it was just okay. I’ll have to check out bears on hemlock mountain.

I have a 6 year old boy who has started to ask for chapter books and I hear about the Secret Zoo one and that’s how we started. I did not pre read it, my mistake, and we ended up stopping it. He wanted to keep going but I could tell he was a bit disturbed and scared. The Water Horse sounds cool. I’ll give that one a try with him. Thanks for the videos.

I like your choices. Thank you for mentioning about"scary" parts. My 5.5 year old is super sensitive. I've tried a few things as read alouds, and I can't seem to get her interested in anything. She loves being read to, likes picture books, and even more contemporary chapter books. I might try a few of these.

Keri Eubank I have sensitive kiddos too! I’ve been caught off guard before while reading aloud, so I’ve started pre-reading a bit - I feel like everyone’s threshold is different, so I hold recommendations loosely 🤷🏼♀️. I hope you find some good ones!!

We read a lot of picture books but I really want to get started on chapter books. I feel like my kids are old enough to enjoy chapter books but I don't know which to start with. Thanks for the recommendation and for mentionion which ones might get scary. I want to start with something gentle, maybe an adventure.

Depending on the ages, there is a small book called Two Times the Fun that my 4 year old really like ... after that we loved My Fathers Dragon and The Bears on Hemlock Mountain!

We have loved Narnia, the illustrated Harry Potter books, Matilda, Charlotte's Web, Zoey and Sassafras, How to Train your Dragon series, Mercy Watson, My Father's Dragon books (3), etc. I have a 3 and an *almost* 6 year old. I am so excited to get him the Mary Pope Osborne Odyssey books (he has listened to the entire Magic Tree House and Merlin Mission series). Thanks for the recommendations!

I am so excited to read Harry Potter to my kids - especially the illustrated versions, they are so beautiful!! I was thinking of waiting a bit - but did your almost 6 year old enjoy them?

@@sciencemama He loved them! He wanted to continue with the regular books (the illustrated stops at book 4) but I decided to stop until he is a bit older. I think we first read them around four and a half. He also loved the illustrated Percy Jackson book because he loves Greek Myth. He regularly asks for the Harry Potter books for his audiobook time, too!

I also just purchased him the illustrated Mythical Creatures book for his birthday in October. I'm sure it will also be a hit as it has some gorgeous illustrations.

A Mouse Called Wolf was the first chapter book we read so it holds great memories. You have a great selection. We have read them all except the last 2. The Secret Zoo is on our shelf to read soon (we are reading The Keeper of the Lost Cities atm). If the Odyssey book is too intense, we read Argos by Ralph Hardy instead. Its the story of Odysseus but through the view of his dog waiting for his return. Still has mention of monsters etc but not so graphic as some versions.

And BTW Mary Poppins is very different to the film. She seemed quite grumpy and snarky. We didn't like it at all. However my daughter has loved listening to Nurse Mathilda stories.

Thank you for the backup book idea for the Odyssey book - that is super helpful! Ahh, we loved A Mouse Called Wolf ... all my son wanted to listen to was Mozart for a while after we finished it :)

Some of our absolute favorites from last year were: Black Beauty Charlotte's Web Charlie and The Chocolate Factory The Wizard of Oz We read many more, but these are the ones that are mentioned alot during different discussions. 😊 Good stack of 📚, I like the sound of the Frog Princess, and that it seems much different than the movie!

Thank you for the book selection ideas. I’m totally new to homeschooling, how do you approach history and geography? Is this taking part in your morning basket in a Charlotte mason style or are you following a curriculum or just going through a list of topics that you have chosen? X

Hi! At this point, I'm approaching science and history/geography in a unit study type of approach. We are just finishing up our unit on plants and then we will start up one on the human body! I felt like with my kids ages that we could handle either science or history but not both at the same time. So, I'm planning history for after Christmas :)

Hi, thanks for connecting on Goodreads. My kids are 9 and 5. We are loving The Wild Robot series and Little House in the Big Woods (the audiobook is great). This school year, I plan to read Ramona and Beezus, My Father's Dragon, The Prairie Thief, The House at Pooh Corner, Christmasaurus, Matilda, The Year of the Dog, Tales of a Fouth Grade Nothing, Anna Hibiscus, and whatever else we can fit in. If you have suggestions for diverse chapter books appropriate for a five year old, I would love to hear them.

Have you read James and the Giant Peach ... my kids thought it was funny. Or Charlotte's Web or The Bears on Hemlock Mountain?

The Wild Robot Series by Peter Brown and Big Foot and Little Foot by Ellen Potter (also a series) are amazing read alouds. We are on the third book of Big Foot and Little Foot and the kids are loving it- well written, short chapters, cute illustrations, and each chapter leans itself into being a cliffhanger so the kids are always asking, “One more chapter?!” Also check out Zooey and Sassafras series- excellent stories with magical creatures and easy to understand basic concepts of science.

We LOVED the Wild Robot series, but this is the first I've heard of Big Foot and Little Foot ... I'm going to go look it up now :) I also like the idea of Zooey and Sassafras as a read aloud, I've always thought of it as a science curriculum!

For read aloud lists, I really like The Read Aloud Family and The Read Aloud Handbook ... I also watch other KZfaq moms share their lists! I'm happy to do a video on our reading time - I'm planning on sharing one shortly for our morning time :)

Isn't the frog princess a different story from the princess and the frog? Because weren't the little girls being read that story in the beginning of the film? Or am I imagining things lol

Haha, I’m pretty sure they are different ... although in both the princess becomes a frog but the book doesn’t have any voodoo or anything. Although I’ve only seen the movie once 🤷🏼♀️

@@sciencemama that makes sense. I didnt know that. I thought only the prince turned into the frog lol! But Disney's movies are always different from the original material so I'm not surprised. My son actually loves the movie and hopefully when we can travel we can go to New Orleans. So we can take in all the wonderful cultural of it. He seems very interested in the food 🤣
