I bought one of these and it's little brother, I think it is a Scout over 5 years ago. That was a great presentation. Mine is a bit heavy and they updated this somewhat. I love it. I just keep a small box of littles stick, I also use lots of larger branches. Have you seen a Sun oven? just used the Sun to do the cooking. There is something about cooking food outdoors just to tasty and they pay for themselves fairly quickly and being from Tn I don't need to heat my already hot house. Thanks for the video.

What benefits are better than ecozoom versa? Same weight for both Handles on ecozoom look better to me The vents on the bottom looks cool, but I wonder if the ecozoom versa is of similar design because I’m pretty sure it can burn right on top of grass or whatever without leaving a burn mark because the bottom most chamber is where the soot falls / air intake goes

I bought one of these years ago now because I was a non-union stagehand and for one repeat run of gigs, all we got was a camping spot in the desert (with burn restrictions and no fire pit, of course) 4 miles from the venue we were working as well as the grocery store, which closed fairly early. The higher-ups had decided that baptism by fire for new people was the thing to do, so a whole lot of people would start with the company, find themselves carpooling 4 hours to the gig, then arrive at the campsite and realize that they were completely unprepared for what the conditions required. Especially after a 20-hour workday of hard labor (yes, you read that right) before another just like it, you are a fucking hero to both yourself and others when you can pull this stove out to start cooking food for a number of people in minutes from a cold start, with literally nothing but some sticks and pinecones you had everyone just comb the campsite for. I have cooked an untold number of times with the Silverfire Survivor Rocket Stove and it has remained a steadfast piece of gear that I have been pleased to find has not experienced any problems with the metal in the burn chamber becoming brittle or warped with repeated use over something like half a decade. I live in earthquake country, so now this stove serves as a centerpiece for my small family's camping and disaster mitigation gear. I understand many are concerned with it's size and weight, but in a medium to long-term disaster mitigation situation, it would be invaluable. As I said, you can run this little beast on just sticks and pinecones. No specialized fuel to carry or to have to worry about obtaining long after local supplies are gone. Relieving yourself and your family of that worry at a time when you likely have a thousand others is a good thing, in my opinion.

I got the SilverFire Super Dragon and love it. Being able to tune the flame from very low temp to blazing hot was the deciding factor for me. I thought needing a power source would be a big deal but ultimately I'll never pack this stove out. I have power options such as acar battery, solar and a small battery pack with 8 AA batteries.

Yesterday I decided to try some wet wood fire starting, i used a bit of dried grass underneath and twigs as main fuel and my Weber charcoal starter which is similar to a rocket stove. The heat generated made the wet wood burn so quick I was quite surprised. But like you say, you have to improvise to survive.

Had my SF Survivor stove for two years. We RV a lot but love to cook outdoors. This stove is awesome and uses minimal fuel, I have used it for at least 200 meals. A Wok fits perfectly and cast iron skillets, I do use a 1/4” thick, round cast diffuser if needed for lower heat and heat dispersal. This has been the best camp kitchen item I have ever purchased. Don’t forget to get the double walled Dragon Pot, I boil 1 1/2 Gal water at start up giving me hot water for meals and clean up.

I've got a mini dragon pot. Do you think it could balance?
@rpreece1477
@rpreece1477 Жыл бұрын
@@stolenorange you could use that mini dragon pot but I recommend investing in the proper dragon pot to fit the survivor because it also acts as wind skirt and totally illuminates smoke once the fire is going. You’ll have one hell of a mess from the smoke using the mini. I know it seems expensive buying the proper Dragon pot but it’s totally worth it if you do any amount of outdoor cooking. The full-size dragon pot I use mostly for boiling water which makes life so much better camping. Cheers

I bought one a few years ago, had no idea how to use it correctly. Put way too much wood in and my fire was hotter then a BBQ in hell and I burned my meat in just a few minutes. Now I know not to stuff the chamber full. I also got mine with the stone grill accessory. It is all very nice quality stuff, just need to practice with it because it is surprisingly easy to use too much wood and get your cooking surface way too hot.

@norwoodzomboy
@norwoodzomboy 5 жыл бұрын
The group which created the original Rocket Stove recommends an insulator - or better yet, the J-Tube be made of a mix of clay & Vermiculite. Besides being of relatively light weight it creates a much higher temperature and thus a more efficient burning within the J-Tube. For portability/durability though, a welded metal J-Tube has it's advantages!

Anyone shopping for "rocket stoves" this is the one to get. Made in America with sound design principles in mind. Cost a little bit but you can buy a lot of foreign junk that won't come close to this design. There are other versions at the Silverfire store if you feel this is not exactly your fit. Also check out Todd Albi. Silverfire is his business. The man knows what he is doing!!!
@norwoodzomboy
@norwoodzomboy 5 жыл бұрын
FYI the Rocket Stove design group also recommends a pot surround - even a simple piece of thin metal (the Skirt) with a hole/gap for a handle - bent around the cooking pot, with about a 1inch gap between pot & surround. This directs the super-heated gases to directly contact the sides of the pot as well as the bottom, heating it faster with less fuel. Not essential for a picnic, but useful in a low fuel or survival situation.

I suggest that you buy a rocket stove with two doors. One for adding fuel and a lower/smaller door for damper/ventilation control. The use of tiny twigs as fuel is not efficient and will need near continuous adding of more fuel. Choose a brand of stove that accepts biomass, wood chunks the size of the combustion chamber diameter, wood fuel pellets (place the pellets in a stainless steel sink drain basket), and bagged or homemade charcoal.

This is the best designed pre-made rocket stove I've seen. There was very little smoke once it got going. I have to wonder why I wouldn't choose a Biolite Homestove 2 though. It seems that gasifier stove designs, force fed like the Biolite or non-force fed like the solo stove, would burn hotter and more efficient but I'm speculating.

Hotter is not always better. I've lived in the wilderness for up to 4 months at a time. Sometimes you just want something to cook slow. Really hot is not good for cooking eggs or oatmeal. Really hot is not good for trying to bake something in a Coleman oven. So a wise person looks at what they will be cooking the most and buys accordingly. I do a lot of low heat cooking as a vegan....so the Survivor works good for me. A Rocket Stove by its very nature is hugely efficient - never anything but ash when you get done.
