Improve your backswing and downswing by feeling how to rotate correctly. Its not what you think!
In this weeks Video Danny Maude reveals one of the biggest mistakes golfers make when they try to turn/rotate in the golf swing. Learn how this mistake kills your distance and effects your overall accuracy of both your irons and your driver.
The easy swing drill reveals how golfers can naturally move their bodies to create ball first contact and much straighter drives.

ABOUT DANNY
-----------------------
Thanks for stopping by. I created this website as a resource just for you to support you on your golfing journey as I know how tricky learning this game can be…to say the least!
I personally found learning the game too long and difficult in the early days. I read all the books, watched all the videos but my game was not improving. Then after studying various forms of neuro science, motor learning, psychology and personal development in less than two years I went from struggling golfer to the final stage of the Open Championship.
On KZfaq and my personal website (www.dannymaude.com) I will bring you the most up to date training, training that is getting tangible results for my clients right now. I don’t know where you are in your golfing journey, you could be just starting out or maybe your body isn’t as flexible as it once was or you’ve got ambitions to slash your handicap. Wherever you are I’ve created a place here you can learn, share your ideas, ask questions and get all the support you need to enjoy this great game.
Be prepared though. If its a quick fix you are after Im not your man. Here I will give you step-by-step advice that you can take straight to the practice ground and apply to the course but it will require you to get stuck in, screw up…a lot, practice some more and then watch those scores tumble
I’ve had the pleasure of coaching thousands of students all around the world and if you are up for the challenge and are ready to get in the game…LETS GO TO WORK!

Ok, I know I am late to the game here but….. just saw this video and I think it is worth re-posting as a newer video. This one video was like magic. Of course I was one of those that thought rotation meant turning. This has fixed my swing and downswing plane. I videoed my swing prior and afterwards. No comparison. I am on plane. When I used a launch monitor, I am about 40% more accurate that I was. THANK YOU DANNY!!!!

Danny Maude Here ! Just read an article by GOLF AI , not going to type his name , he recommended one of your you tube videos about a hardware screw below the hips , I’ll watch that one later , just wanted to say , as a long time upper body mover who developed the classic flat shoulder turner, head moving off the ball / left wrist pivoting around the right wrist , loading into the right pivot point ( Ledbetter ) , golfer, I find this video most informative ! Straight - line turn of my right just changed everything in an instant ! Retired Teaching Professional , so I know ! Thanks, John ps. It’s the hips that turn the shoulders and correctly, no need to think about that anymore !

I was on the driving range, struggling with shot consistency on all of my clubs. I suspected the problem was in my hip rotation because I didn't have a set rule aside from trying to move the hips first on the downswing. I watched this video, picked up the pitching wedge, "stepped on the accelerator," as the video teaches, and hit 7/7 straight down the middle to 60 meters every time. Picked up the 5 iron, 3 wood, 7 iron, and the driver and saw nearly the same dramatic improvement in consistency with every one. This may be the most effective golf drill video I've ever watched! Thanks for posting!

Danny, I started playing golf 50 years ago as a 14 yo. I was playing some good golf during 1990's when playing regularly and off a handicap of 14. Had a number of time-offs from golf since early 2003 ... never recovered. Played 5 rounds late last year and struggled badly. So bad, I decided to start from scratch. Found your video on the stance and addressing the ball. I practiced that it made sense. I then went looking for your videos on the next steps. Went outside in the backyard and practiced the next steps. After 4 weeks of no golf, just learning & practicing I went out for 2 rounds at my old club. Guess what no more slicing, irons straighter and longer, driver finding fairways more consistently. Yes, old habits creep back, but I knew what went wrong. Still more work to do, but the sense of confidence in playing shots is uplifting. Thank you for your solid, simple teaching.

For me, this is a golf swing epiphany. I have worked so hard on my swing over thirty years with many top notch instructors, one a perennial top five rank in the nation. I’ve gotten it down to trying to finish low and left like Mr Hogan. This concept not only has put all of the bits and pieces together, but also now that I am not trying to TURN so hard I am finishing lower and more around. Breaking old habits will take a little time but I am so elated. Thank you, Danny!

Eureka ! This tip has stopped me swaying back and I am now covering the ball with my sternum on my backswing whilst keeping my head still and then swinging through the ball with forward shaft lean, compressing the ball and striking the ball first and the ground after. Previously, I have tried to get forward shaft lean by following every other golf coach's tips on KZfaq but have found their drills very difficult if not impossible to replicate. This really works and has increased my pitching wedge distance by 30 yards from a 3/4 swing ! For the avoidance of doubt, when Danny says straight back he does not mean take the club straight back but the right hip. The way I visualise it, is to address the ball with both knees flexed and then simply straighten the right leg on the backswing - which moves the right hip backwards whilst preventing the torso and head swaying backwards as well. Danny's other vlog 'Learn to compress your irons with these 3 simple GOLF TIPS' is a good complimentary vlog to this one in which he says "think in curves" ( the club not straight back as I have mentioned above); a Frisbee or discus analogy ; and the Happy Gilmore effect, and it is a combination of these two videos that have improved my iron distances immensely. [Mainly this vlog and the 'think in curves' from the other one.] And also making sure that I do not rotate my wrists on the backswing by keeping the club face looking at the ball [for longer] in the early part of the backswing. I sincerely hope this has the same positive effect for others that struggle with their irons as it has for me.
@davidrichards7711
@davidrichards7711 3 жыл бұрын
PS I also think it helps to think that you are 'swinging around a post' (the post being my right leg) so as to stabilise everything at the top of the backswing, whereupon I make a slight pause to give me that split second in time to move my hips first as I start the downswing.

Why is it, in the history of youtube and all the lessons I have every taken, nobody has ever explained to me that it is a straight line motion? I mean look, I play a lot of golf and practice 3-4 times a week. I get my clubs fitted to me and I take regular lessons. I have the "good player miss" which we know is a hook caused by sliding. I am told not to slide, but I can never figure out why I am sliding or how to stop it. In 10m you explained to me how rotation really works and now, no more sliding (at least when i don't get lazy). Just a follow up to a previous comment. Because courses have been closed actually using this tip has been delayed, Being in my 70's I have struggled getting a full shoulder turn at times. The problem is partly a lack of flexibility, but improper technique also. I started using the lesson here and voila a full shoulder turn. To emphasize this move for now anyway I feel as though my takeaway is starting with the legs rather than shoulders and I move my right hip straight back. Still needs some more "getting used to" but the good shots have gained about 10 yards or about a club with the irons. One of the best lessons EVER.

Danny, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for this video!!!! I have spent all winter (US) working on the abomination of a golf swing i got to at the end of last season. I had one lesson and many, many revelations in ball striking. Each of those worked, then everything got worse. The wheels kept falling off. I found myself sliding and opening up my club face and pushing the ball out almost 90 degrees away from me. Usually with short irons, then it got in my head and stuck there. I would learn something new that worked fabulously but then at the end of an awesome practice session, I ouI would revert back to that damn hozel push out 90 degrees. I was at the point where I almost stopped playing as I had spent many many hours at the simulator over the winter with some great results , then very poor outcomes. I went on to You Tube for my last resort, looked for Danny because he focuses on feel and simple measures. This particular video hit me like a ton of bricks. I picked up a club in my living room looking for that feel, Took the club outside in the yard, looking for that feel. I spent about an hour practicing, visualize, and more important feeling what he taught. I had a tee time set up with my son this afternoon and was actually feeling ambivalent to go because of the disaster I had witnessed the last 7 rounds indoor I had experienced. Well, lets just say, I picked up the club that has given me a bad mental image when i pick up, a utility wedge, I focused on what Danny taught and hit the ball cleanly, at my target, 135, dead straight, no recurring crap from that ugly push. Then, I proceeded to hit each iron and wood cleanly, smoothly, effortlessly and long. I can’t thank you enough for posting this video. I t appeared to me just as I needed it, it will stay with me, I will watch again many times and now, will actually start the season with the swing that I desire, along with powerful distance. THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH

Eureka - That’s it!!!!! So important. Its what is needed to keep your swing in the efficient swing plane (not wandering out of it) for max power and accuracy with least effort ending in great follow through. I do this (hip back and out) on the backswing but not always on the downswing do I symmetrically repeat it on the opposite hip/leg. I tend to stop and go rigid thus blocking my follow through rotation. Off to my garden! Thanks. So many times it’s not what you are doing it’s what you are not doing that is causing the problem.

Hi Danny, greetings from Malaysia. All these years of playing I have been having the problem of swaying in my swing trying to "shift my weight" back and through. Having seen your video I realized there is no such thing as "shifting my weight" but instead it should have been applying the correct "pressure" or "force" on the back and front foot in the swing. A few days ago I happened to watch a KZfaq video from Mike Malaska a golf teacher from the US, he said the same thing about this and he quoted what Tiger who told him that the only thought Tiger has during the back swing is to "push his hip as deep as possible". He never once mentioned the need to "rotate" his hips or "shift his weight". Now it all make sense to me. At the moment we are having a MCO (Movement Control Order) here in Malaysia until the 14th of April so golf or any other sports/outdoor activities are not allowed. I guess I just need to wait before trying out your instructions given. Thanks again for this great light bulb moment. Cheers.

Hi Danny, hope you and your family are keeping well. I was a member at Canterbury G.C for a couple of years 2015-17 and had a few lessons with you. I am now back semi-retired in sunny Belfast waiting for golf to start up again at my new club Dunmurry G.C. After trawling the internet for golf videos to help my game improve, including watching hour and two hour videos from the greats such as Seve and Jack Nicklaus, I restarted watching your you tube videos again. I can honestly say they are so engaging and helpful delivered in a very straight forwarded manner. I find the individual drills very helpful and easy to follow. Now that I have settled on your tips to improve my game I relish the challenge of getting back on the course as a senior member and get my handicap down. Many thanks again Danny I think it’s that straight talking, no nonsense Yorkshire approach which appeals so much. Take care, Brendan.

I’ve had lessons recently where I was told I early extend and don’t rotate my hips. After “fixing” my early extension and getting my hips more active I have frustratingly started hitting the ball really inconsistently with huge slices, the occasional straight pull and regular shanks. This drill has shown me that I’ve been thinking about hip rotation in completely the wrong way - I’ve been focusing on firing my trail hip as fast as possible in the downswing which is causing my shoulders to spin out at the top, whereas the first drill in this video very quickly demonstrates the correct way to rotate the hips. I can’t wait to take this to the range. Thanks Danny!

I have to say, I stopped playing a few years ago and just started again. I took a few lessons but couldn’t get my swing back. I happened upon your channel and watched a few of your videos. Suddenly everything clicked. Your way of explaining things makes perfect sense to me. I was supposed to play 18 today but we were rained out so I went to the range and played a par 3. My ball striking was better than ever. I got more from a couple of your videos than all the lessons combined. Thank you. You made golf fun again.

I watch the videos but don’t seem to carry info onto the golf course. Finally asked my wife to video me playing on the course. It was a slow day on a mountain course so, no delaying others. She took about about 12 to 15 videos . I was shocked and somewhat embarrassed at my execution of basics set up, backswing, and balance and tempo. The next day I played much better, hit straighter, longer, and enjoyed the round so much better. Strongly recommend videos to compare personal improvement!!! Thanks to you and golf professionals in general. Many thanks! Ed

Danny, I am a 73 year Brit living in the USA who makes his living coaching race car drivers so I am super interested in the teaching side of golf. I started playing when I turned 40 and have played 33 years of inconsistent golf, with my default swing being to "come over the top". I won a super senior tournament a few weeks ago at my home course Wyantenuck in MA USA, both gross and net with an 82 from the middle tees. Then in another recent tournament I had a 109 on the same course! Grr! My friends and I have been following you and practising using your videos as our guide. I can honestly say that the Best Rotation Drill has cured me, as I haven't come over the top once in my last 7 rounds, and that never happens normally, thank you, thank you, I can now sleep at night

Danny, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I am a 4 handicap with a homemade swing. My short game saves me a lot! But ive tried hundreds of hip drills, swing drills etc on KZfaq and haven't had much luck. After I stumbled on this video, I've gained 25 plus yards on my drives. 240-250 to 260-275. (Hopefully increasing more when I get it perfected). Ive been rotating my hips instead of thinking straight line like your video. Such a game changer . My ball flight and impact for irons are incredible now. Best explanation of what the hips are really doing. Sorry but I'm not sharing this with my buddies tho. Gonna make them keep buying me dinner .

I do not play a lot of golf. I actually tried practicing this method inside my house. One night it clicked and I could finally make a full turn. Before this I was actually just turning my upper body and when I tried to turn more I'd actually release my grip and regrip the club at the top of the swing. This afternoon I finally took this to a local 12 Hole Golf Course. I played the best golf I've ever played. I'm 61 years old now and I hit the ball further and straighter than I have ever hit before Thank You Danny !!!

This video is fantastic. Such an easy drill. Got right up and went to the back yard with my lob wedge and aimed at the same bucket I always aim at. Out of 3 balls, one went in and the other two hit the bucket. Immediate improvement in my swing. I was experimenting with everything possible before this, ball position, grip, shoulder turn, staying down, etc. This one change made everything else moot. Love it and thank you.

Danny, this is the best golf advice I have had in my 20 years of golf. My lower back pain was gradually getting worse and worse after each round and last season I could hardly play at all. By using this technique I can go 18 holes with almost no back pain and because I strike the ball much cleaner it has also added distance to both irons and clubs. Thank you 🙏🏻🙏🏻😎😎

Hey Danny, I really think you should reboot this video, and here's why. During lock-down I got back into golf again in a major way. For the last 10 years I played 3 - 4 times a year, and though I had lessons probably 20 years + ago, there was a lot wrong with my game, but I managed to hack round and have fun. This year, playing every week when lock down restrictions were lifted, I invested in lessons again. Now the down side with lessons is it completely deconstructs you current game, which was what I needed but its its difficult and progress is slow. Golf is really like a jigsaw puzzle. You can see the picture with just a few pieces missing, but the more pieces missing, the harder it is to complete the image. My lessons were going well, working on one aspect at a time, but I was still struggling for consistency, and longer the club, the worst I was. My lesson last Tuesday was a disaster. My rotation was identified by my coach as a 'sway' but I just couldn't visualize this. When consciously trying to fix this, every shot (if i managed to actually connect) was a stinker. Immediately after the lesson I took a large bucket to practice more. Bad move. I was tired, rushing my shots. I was all over the place. I knew I need to drop the club, go home and practice eliminating that sway, that felt to me like a rotation. I took a couple of days off then started my research on your channel. I watched this video twice, practiced in the lounge, and had an epiphany when you mentioned the rotation moving in straight lines, with the feet effectively as acceleration pedals. Your demo of this reminded me of the Beyonce 'single ladies' video (know the bit I mean?), and this helped me remember the drill! :-). So yesterday, I went to the range, feeling fresh, large bucket, and started with a few stretches. For my first shot I took a 7 iron. My back swing felt the weight transfer to the inside of me right heel. On the down swing the smooth transfer of weight was noticeable and the real power move was when I tucked that right hip back, resulting in a very efficient, tidy connection..and what I connection! I hit shot after shot, so, so much better. so , so, more powerful. NO MORE SWAY! This was the rotation I thought I had been doing. I recently brought this Utility Iron (2 Iron) which I could not get a tune out of. Yesterday, I was crushing shots for the first time with it! This was a major step forward for my game. I now feel I can bring a complete technique when I address the ball instead of 'hit and hope' approach. Over the winter I plan to hit a lot of balls, work on consistency. Thanks for this Video Danny. Keep up the good work.

Hey Danny thanks. I had recently started to whip my right hip through with the feeling of meeting the ball at the same time as my club head. Thought I was getting more power, consistency.. however after 2 longish practice sessions I was left with a very sore right hip. So your talking of ignoring the hips is a very positive idea for a 63 year old golfer.

Danny, this video was transformational to my game today. The way you demonstrated what the typical slicer’s upper body movement was like was me to a T. The leg movement, inducing rotation, sounded simple and I tried it.... Perfect! Not only did it help me keep my balance on the follow-through to a complete finish but I was striking the ball better than ever... on the fairway... need to sort the greens out now 😂 Managed to get me round in a gross 77 in very strong winds (off 10, par 69). You are the best golf coach for all the golfers because you just point out and teach us the most important factors of golf swing in a most simple way and I have been feeling swings much much easier than before . There are countless numbers of golf instructors but they tend to tell us too many thIngs in a time, so many golfers watching thier swIngs are liable to get so confused in the motions. You only tell us the most important and inevitable parts of swings . Today I tried to swing as you told us by pushing down clubs with body turn, my balls became unbelivably great thanks to your instruction. Highly appreciate your teachings Doumo arigatou ! I think you offer the best advice for senior golfers. Your narratives are excellent. Probably some unwarranted and wanted criticism: Your body movements don't always coincide with the narrative. First time writing a comment after watching dozens of golf videos. Just tried this on the range and after about 5 minutes of awkward feeling swings (my left leg kept feeling locked on the downswing until I stopped forcing the “move back” so harshly) I had my best range session throughout the bag in a very long time time. Great instruction, however I seen two things happen. When your swinging without the ball, yes you seem to be still, when you get behind the ball you do something different, you shift all your weight to your left leg for power in which you said was not true, but you do it. It shows up in the slow motion portion of the video. Your viewers should know that their is a shift to your left leg in order to get the power as well as getting your hands ahead of the ball past the hips. But the basic principle still remains in this video and is a good start for anyone struggling or needs to be reminded not to stand up out of the shot. Thank you.

Hi Danny, I have been an over the top ball striker for 50 years. Fortunately, with a very strong grip I seldom sliced the ball. Usually hit it straight with a slight curve right at the end of the flight. It's been 8 months since I picked up a club and on Friday hit 60 balls with my driver trying to turn my hips with not much success and very frustrated. Spent the next day searching KZfaq videos on turning the hips. When I viewed this video, your explanation of moving your hips back and forth like you walk and the lateral move forward keeping the left hip lower was a complete revelation. On Sunday, I took my driver to the range again. Before actually hitting a ball, I moved my right hip back and stopped, then shift my hips left and stopped, then swung the club. I would do the same moves again slowly without stopping and without hitting a ball. And then hit a ball swinging at half speed. After 50 balls, I was swinging at maybe 60 to 70 percent speed and hitting the ball at least as far as I did last year with much less effort and slightly left of target with not as strong a grip. Of course I had to make some other adjustments like ball position and tee height but that was just trial and error. Can't wait to see how this effects my iron swing. Thanks so much.
