WELCOME!!! To this full in-depth boat tour of a beautiful 1987 S2 35C. "Freda Kai" is a center cockpit sloop rigged monohull sailboat. She has a 6' draft, 50' air draft, 12'6" beam and a 29hp Volvo engine. Sailing at an average speed of 5.9 knots. While sporting 720w of solar panels, it easily makes all it's own electricity.
S/V Freda Kai has been sailed solo and with crew by my good friend, mentor, and buddy boat Jay Safro. This boat has been his home for the past eight years and more than 12,000nm. From this boat Jay loves to explore and go on adventures wherever his anchor rests across the Caribbean. Choosing to spend most of this time on anchor rather than a marina, like a true sailor should.
This is a humble, and comparatively affordable sailboat. But I think that is an upside. Because unlike most catamarans and other larger vessels. Freda Kai is highly affordable and has an very low cost to maintain. Allowing Jay to be able to sail and cruise full time. Without worry about breaking the bank. Earning money here and there when he needs to by working as an upholster on other boats, or doing fiberglass and any other job that might need to be done on a wide range of boats. Jay is truly a jack of all trades, and has been an insightful influence on my own sailing and cruising lifestyle over the past several years.
Jay has future plans of changing and adding just a few systems to his boat. Mainly a water-maker. But all in all, this boat has been and is a fully capable ocean going cruiser. In the future he plans to make more improvements and upgrades to this boat. Stay tuned to see what comes next! As well, Jay regularly takes on crew to join in his sailing adventures. Post a comment below if you're interested in joining aboard Freda Kai!

👋🏼New Here?!?👋🏼
Hello & welcome! I'm Daniel aka "Adventureman Dan." I've been living on the edge, from one adventure to another for the past nine years. Stating in Central California with my first GoPro, through SoCal, Baja, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Alaska and throughout the whole USA. But for the past five years on my sailboat "Adventureborne" I'm open to unlimited possibilities of where I can go, and what I can do!

I read your comment and the S2 are in my top 10 boats, especially the 11C. I presently own a Lancer 28' and that is not a good sailboat. She's not good at anything but she can handle anything, even me torturing her 😉she's reliable and never let me down. Tell me, how does your S2 dances with the wind and the waves?

I read enough comments to say something but won't because I am a gentleman....I am turning 60 this month so manners sir ;) You both jive well. The information was sooooo very helpful to me. I am selling everything to sail everywhere. I am in Florida and having never sailed before this may mean the Caribbean 1, 5, 7, 10 yrs and come home to sit on the beach and never go the whole distance of Caribbean, Australia/NZ, Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, and lastly the UK then home to sit on the beach and drink drinks with umbrellas in them while I toss a line in the water. I would be fine if that's what transpires or even half of it or just Caribbean. My new chapter and I get to write it for me after 30+ yrs country living on 10 acres and the best business of 30+ years. Thanks for the awesome video. Disregard the nay-sayers and judgmental twits. They don't see what a cool team you guys are and the truth be told Jay is matured and likely has said more and likes now saying less. Dan is young and so full of piss and vinegar Jay recognizes his NEED to talk more. Either way my best friend (from middle school) and I talk all over each other all the time so I told him when he takes a breathe it's my turn until I take a breathe then he gets to go and we still talk over one another. Love him like a brother from another mother!! 20-30 hubris 30-40 pride 40-50 humility 50-60 appreciation 60 on...who am I ;) Cheers

I like Jay’s boat. I like CC’s because of the owners cabin and the poop decks. Cockpits can be a little small. They also tend to have an engine room as opposed to compartments, which means more room to work on engine or add stuff such as genset, water maker, a/c etc.

Ok, that looks like heaven to me. I'm spending my last career days doing CAD and champing at the bit to be sailing brains out. It's so cool to see that doing jobs in upholstery and fiberglass, etc., is a viable option. I also have many skills so I'm really glad to see that. Plus I'm curious now about how people are liking the Carribean and this boat tour with your destinations mapped out is great. I do mapping for a living, along with design and it looks so much more fun to me to be it than be just charting it out. Thanks so much!

Now in South Africa with crew, proparing to complete the Atlantic crossing and my second circumnavigation. Many similariets between the boats. I am sure this 35c could do what SunShine has done.

My Hunter 34 (34.5 feet long, almost 12 feet wide), has a port side aft-ish cabin, at the bottom of the companionway. It's what sold me on the boat. That cabin extends under the cockpit, for part of the berth. Ends, in front on an aft exterior locker. I'll be relocating a drain pipe, that sticks down 3 inches, just above the berth (it drains a shallow locker, that's over part of the berth area.

I have hull #10, 1986 S2-35C. I have only come across one other on the Chesapeake. It's quite easy to run your reefing lines back to the cockpit as I've done. I also added a strong track which makes getting the main up and down very easy. I fit 4 x 100 amp (Renogy) behind the back cushion closest to the stove. It's a tight fit, but it gets them out of the engine compartment and frees up all the space under the galley sink/counter. More importantly, closer to the breaker panel. I would love to see what you did for an anchor winch. I ended up installing a reel style winch from Lone Star Marine.

It’s a nice boat and I’m sure it’s very well maintained but the hull being cored below the waterline is a dealbreaker for me. Even if they were plentifully available, when I list my criteria for what I HAVE to have in a boat, a solid FG hull is near the top of the list.

@@HydeKills this boat has a balsa wood cored hull, meaning that there are two sheets of fiberglass sandwiched with balsa. As opposed to a solid fiberglass layup. If water gets into the balsa core, that boat will be structurally compromised. Solid fiberglass hulls are subject to their own issues but overall are much more desirable (in my opinion) that any cored hull. There are also hulls that are solid ‘glass below the waterline and cored above the waterline but given my preference, I’ll take solid ‘glass every time.

If you go Lithium, be sure it's LiFePo4. The others can burn up, taking your boat with it. I decided, on my Hunter 34, to stick with lead-acid, move them closer to the centerline, just behind the motor (better balance to keep it upright. I have the shallow draft version), with anti-sulphators on each one (the potted kind, that only desuphate, when the battery is being charged.

Great show. Love the boat, looking for something similar in the next few years. I'm in Puerto Rico of you need an extra hand from a retired electrical engineer that loves to be on the water.

Boom vang is actually more important with this sheeting configuration. When easing the main sheet for downwind sailing, there’s nothing preventing the boom from lifting up.

Elephant Butte??!! I've moved back home to Albuquerque and I still want to sail a Folkboat in Abiquiú Lake and Navajo Reservoir! I've only sailed the cold San Francisco Bay, and up and down the coast. Great boat, yours is, especially there in the Bahamas. All the best to you!

I recommend, that you be prepared, for going south of the Equator. It's only warming half as fast, as the North. I expect lots of unrest, up North, when this Spring's crops come in, very very very short. I'm looking at the Rio Grand---the one in southern Argentina.

Absolutely WONDERFULL presentation of a REAL SAILBOAT with a REAL SAILOR. Similar Boat then mine, very interesting. And good Information about Haul Out in Grenada, do all the Jobs and continue. That means to me, crossing the Atlantic from Spain Nov.-Dec. 24, that I have good Intel. Even the tours you want to do, Fabulously done. My End Destination is Vancouver Island. It would be interesting to know, why Trucking your Boat up to Vancouver? Is that not extremely expensive? Really LOVE HOW YOU DO THINGS

Awesome tour video, jay has a great boat and is really well organized. However, i don't think i like the mast in the middle of the salon like that. However, it is a matter of choice. The importance here is that it is nice to have a friend like that to look after each other in the middle of the sea.

I personally am looking for a center cockpit sailboat and I'm gonna be a solo sailer. I really love Jay's boat. Wish it was a 40 to 45 footer. But it is still a very nice boat.

@@Adventureman_Dan yeah, it's a guy thing. But I heard many people say don't go over 45 feet if you're gonna solo sail. It gets harder to control.
