There's a moment in Dr. Strangelove where Sellers as Mandrake is listening to Sterling Hayden as Gen. Ripper explain communism and fluoridation how he does not avoid women but he does deny them his essence - Mandrake, absolutely aware that Ripper is completely out of his mind gives a quiet but terrified chuckle of agreement, "Yes, Jack - yes." Just brilliant.

I totally agree. A similarly-themed movie was released around the same time, called 'Failsafe', starring Henry Fonda. It made the same points, but was a serious drama. Of course, any point or message you want to convey is always better conveyed through humour.

Mandrake is possibly based on NORAD deputy commander Air Marshal Roy Slemon, who's cool head prevented a retaliation against the USSR in the Moon Incident 1960. The early warning radars mistook the rising moon as an incoming missile strike.

If I recall correctly, Peter Sellers' doctor wanted to perform heart surgery and had him scheduled, but Peter wanted to put it off for a month, and that's when he died, two weeks after his surgeon had wanted to operate on him. Such a tragic loss not only for his family and friends, but for so many of us who felt that the world was such a better place for his performances. So subtle and whacky at the same time, I feel that nobody can match him for that quality alone. God bless those who bring us laughter.

Holed up one summer night in 1985 at my college fraternity, a handful of rowdy guys with a lot of beer and subs stumbled onto the movie BEING THERE. You could have heard a pin drop. We talked about it on the job that summer for some time. It was something special and we knew it. Basketball Jones still makes me smile.

Many of the characthers imitated in Dr. Stranglove we're WWII Army Air Corps veterans (Curtis LeMay) in Command with Kennedy in the War Room. More than one recomended taking out the USSR nuclear silos in a premptive strike. Kennedy made his famous statement about not bombing humanity back to the stone age.

What a FABULOUS interview. This biographical piece was among the finest I've ever seen, anywhere, anytime. On "Strangelove," my favorite Sellers' role was as Group Captain Lionel Mandrake (although I loved his bespectacled Nazi). I think the greatest single line of the entire movie came when he said (on the Japanese): "Strange thing is, they make such bloody good CAMERAS..." It was delivered with such restraint, that it took my breath away. Brilliant.

*Underestimating Slim Pickens' contribution as 'Major Kong' is a mistake...he was flawless!* *Sellers was brilliant, but so was Pickens...his scene of 'riding down with 'The Big One' is so iconic it's been used hundreds of times as the 'Ultimate expression of complete denial of the reality of madness'* ( *You've really 'defined a role' when people remember your dialog of reciting the contents of a 'Survival Pack' and then saying "Shoot! A feller could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all this!"* ) *Pickens as 'Hollis Wood' in "1941" was equally brilliant in both acting and delivery of dialog*

Keep in mind that Dr. Strangelove was barely 90 minutes long - an hour and a half with absolutely no low points! Yeah, Sellers could have played Kong competently, but Pickins didn't have to act the part - it was made for him - Kubrick just hadn't known it.

Crazy how he basically became Kubrick for the role of the president, then became WeeGee for Strangelove. And how he learned how to do this as a kid growing up in theater. I wonder who he was mimicking in Lolita as Clare Quilty, but regardless, that is his absolute best performance. Strangelove was a better film, but Quilty is his best role. Actually my first real exposure to Sellers (other than watching parts of pink panther as a kid) was late at night, after a night of partying, we were flipping through channels, and Lolita was on, the scene with Sellers as Quilty talking to James Mason on the hotel porch, which was completely improvised, and insane. We couldn't figure out how this was even possible for a black and white movie to have this craziness in it, really modern craziness. Then we were even more shocked by the sex scene.

I have been a fan of Sellers from his early days, ( Ladykillers, ) to Being There. Although his multiple roles in Strangelove were brilliant, my pick was Chauncey Gardener. The sustained and controlled performance by Sellers was magnificent. A child- like innocence others took to be insightful intelligence. My favorite line is when he is taken up in an elevator, and he remarks to the attendant, " This is a very small room. " The attendant laughs at what he thinks is a witticism but is really Chauncey's truthful observation. Sublime!

Russ G Without the accident, Sellers wouldn't have been in the wheelchair or had the leg braces. His character wouldn't have been nearly as compelling. and we wouldn't have had the pleasure of hearing Slim Pickens Saying," I'm gonna get those doors open if it hair lips everybody up on bear creek". I've often wonder'd about that Line. It shows up again in "Full Metal Jacket. The Drill Instructor Screams at a recruit who can't get over an obstacle.
