Just curious - you keep referring to the bobbin - which is thr round plastic item that holds the thread. I think you mean the bobbin case which is what holds the bobbin. I’m really terrible at free motion embroidery so I really need to just practice a lot more😄😄

I have a bit of a “selection” of sewing machines from vintage ones to others that are almost new. I dint own any Janome but I d9 have the Bernjna 350PE a step above the 335 and I’ve never really used any of the fancy embroidery stitches so I’m really interested to see about them

Question: On the Bernina 335, when using embroidery thread on solutable (stabliser) fabric, how can we ensure the bobbin thread works smoothly. I am experiencing bobbin backlash (the thread on the bobbin ends up messy and like a birds nest; as if the bobbin thread is unwinding itself underneath prematurely). I want the top and the bottom to be the same hence I want to use the same thread. I am trying to use Brothread embroidery thread. When I team Brothread embroidery thread with a different thread in the bobbin- Mettler Polysheen - it actually works. But I when I use Brothread embroidery in the top and in the bobbin I get the backlash. I would appreciate any advice or tips...!

Hi Emily, many thanks for your question. I am not sure if you are using the stabiliser in a hoop, if not this would be worth a try to keep it taught as you sew. You will need to adjust the tension, start with the top tension and only do the bobbin if you have to as once adjusted it can be tricky to adjust back for standard sewing. If you do need to adjust the bobbin tension, it's a good idea to have 2 bobbin cases, one for sewing and one for your free motion embroidery. Typically embroidery threads are wound round (rather than cross hatched) if this is the case, then use these on the vertical spool pin. You will achieve better results using the same thread top and bottom and by using a good quality thread like Madeira or Gutermann. I hope that helps, Anna.
