In this episode, you will learn about reflective shade cloth aka aluminet shade cloth and how it may help your plants to photosynthesis more if you are growing plants in the desert.
You will discover why your plants might shut down during the middle of the day if you are growing vegetables in the desert.

Hi there, how did you put the conduit together to have the bars go horizontal, on top? I have conduit pipe and I just want to make a simple structure to hang the shade cloth (I have the illuminate as well) I'm using it to shade my outdoor rabbits and patio. Thank you!

Just an update after putting up the aluminet shade cloth over my tree collards, they starting growing much better. Full sun was just stressing them out a bit too much. With this new shade cloth, I am seeing alot more young and tender growth, which is good eating and getting the plant to be healthier in the long run. Year Update: This cheap chinese "aluminet" has started to flake. I do not recommend if you need to use it longer than 1 season.

I had 2 collard trees that were doing so well. But when the heat came they all died and I couldn’t even getting clippings from it to “take’. I’m decluttering my house to sell it and down-size. When I move in Autumn I hope I can have a little plot to start again. Where can I buy another collard tree then? Thanks John. You’re so appreciated by so many, and loved. I live east of Tucson and have a hoop house that I grow in. Last year I bought 40% Svensson Solaro to protect from the sun. Esthetics mean a lot to me and this product is beautiful as well as functional. We had a hail storm yesterday and I believe it even saved the plastic underneath it from damage. So far, I love it. It is black on one side and white on the other. • Highly reflective white side limits light and heat transmission for more efficient greenhouse shading during the day. • When the temperature drops at night, black side helps reduce radiated heat loss.

This here is some good information! I live in the high desert of California, and let me tell you - this has been the worst summer I can remember! We had a heat 'wave' that lasted for about 3 months, with temps way past 100 degrees every single day. Plus, since we're almost 3,000 feet in altitude, the sun is even more intense. I was going to purchase a regular 40% black shade cloth, but after watching your video I'm now looking into the aluminet shade cloths. Thank you for the information, John. I'll be testing it next summer for sure. Right now, however, the fall garden will be much more enjoyable - for both me and the plants!

Thank you! This video convinced me to try the Aluminet shade net, and I am super happy with it! So happy that I got a second one to cover more plants this season! I'm in southeast Virginia, not the desert, but it gets extremely hot and humid here. The sun, unbelievably, hit 140,000 lux today too. The plants under Aluminet are not even fazed, and that has never happened before in the middle of summer. I even have a pink Brandywine that has set more tomatoes than I can keep up with - normally, you cannot get a Brandywine tomato at all because of the heat here. If not for you, I might never have had another Brandywine, and that would have been a tragedy! Hope all is well, and thank you again. You do a great job!

Very informative video - thank you! Just in time for grow season here in Zone 7a/6b at 2000 ft above sea level. I use 40% Aluminet over my greenhouse and essentially leave it from May-September. At my elevation the sun is hot and intense with most days beautifully crystal clear. Without shade cloth my greenhouse would completely overheat in spite of motorized exhaust/intake fans and misting. I run full hydroponics and shade cloth plus burying reservoirs into ground helps to keep nutrient flow under 75*.

I will definetly buy some my self, my squash plants did not do much this year because here in the San Antonio area has been really hot, but each year it is always like that during the summer (in my opinion), I think investing in this shade cloth will be a good thing. 👍 God bless you!!

Great video John!!!! Thanks to your advice I found a 6.5 by 6.5 black shade cloth (under $15) to put over one of my raised beds and what a difference . . . plants are soooooo much happier. They are just being shaded in the full noon sun and still get morning and late afternoon light. Easy cost effective solution . . . you rock!!!!

I have used several brands of aluminized shade cloth over the years over greenhouses in hot Summer. The main issue / problem I have had is that the aluminum coating on the polypropelene starts flaking off in very small particles when the cloth is handled or moved. Need to wear a dust mask when installing and removing after the first season of use. It may or may not do this when brand new just out of the package. The aluminized cloth definitely reflects more heat energy for hot desert growing, and lasts just as long as regular shade cloth, BUT with flecks of the aluminum coating continually flaking off.

Living in the mild climate we generally have I never thought I'd need shade cloth, but this year we had a rude awakening. For the first time, we experienced horrific wildfires, severe drought, and water restrictions so we lost a lot of plants. I'm getting shade cloth for my veg garden next season for those freakishly scorching days that we can expect in the years ahead. Thanks for this video!

I live in Vegas also. I tried the black shade cloth and noticed the same thing. Will have to try out the reflective shade cloth instead. My Armenian cucumbers, malabar and okra did just fine but the tomatoes and peppers are struggling. Hopefully this will help them next year. I usually watch your video’s to figure out how and what to grow out here so thank you!

This is my first year growing tomatoes here in Texas. This year has also been the hottest yet with temps in the 100s for most of this summer. A quarter of my plants have died, even most of my cucamelons which are native to Mexico. My poor tomatoes have been on my patio in the shade. I hardened them like you're supposed to and they were still burned. I have been researching shade cloths and plan on purchasing one . Thanks for the video. I always enjoy them.

Crystal I am in Melbourne, Australia where it is winter. Last summer it was extremely hot for a long time and the sun was fierce. I grew all my vegetables under a shadecloth tent and they did great. I used a circus tent-like structure with stakes around the garden beds and one stake in the centre, and the shadecloth (70% UV reduction - dark green) draped over the stakes. I watered through the shade cloth and lifted it off most days to hand-pollinate capsicums, chillies and eggplants. Tomatoes fertilised themselves in the wind. I plan on doing the same thing this coming spring/summer and have started getting supplies ready.

I live in El Paso. I put a shade cloth on the southwest side of my tomato cages. I cover the 90 degrees between south and west.

I love in Texas also. We have had a summer to challenge 1980! As luck would have it this year we decided not to use our cover on the garden just to see how it did. And we get the hottest summer EVER! But the garden is still doing really good. Yes we have had some stress but all in all getting a good harvest. Water morning and evening and don't get it on your leaves, especially in the mornings. I believe next year we will probably try out the aluminet shade.

I live up in the panhandle. The heat is hurting bad but we also have winds that are in the 30mph range on the regular. I want to invest in shade cloth because i did a big experiment on tomatoe varieties to see what i liked but after severe weather season, hornworm attacks, and now heat im wondering if i can do it. I want to put up cloth but i also dont want it to blow away

I'm in deep deep S. Texas. We give up trying to grow tomatoes after the middle of June however a few plants that i planted in a shady area are still alive and it's mid July!! Thanks to John, I'm becoming more shade educated. As usual, great video, John.

The black shade net isn't 40%, by these figures, it's about 95% shade. Maybe the label was wrong.

This is great info! I'm in what's called the short prairie grass eco system - almosta desert climate in the summer. Last week, 80s and 90s and this week 90s. I am using the black shade cloth over my salad crops - ive been worrying about the light vs heat factors. Also worries about my tomato and chili plants. Thanks for clearing that up!

I use aluminex fabric for a picnic table sitting area next to my cabin in far west TX desert. Really works well in keeping it tolerable sitting outside.

Thanks for the post. Never heard of the product. I’m not in the desert. But it turns out I can use this for covering my car. A small one would be good in your survival supplies in the trunk. Protect you from sun exposure if you break down or get lost

I grew up in Western NY and always had a garden. Retired now in Las Vegas I want to have a garden. We live in condo with only a 15 x 14 foot concrete patio. John I love your channel. I love your sense of humor. But most of all I love all the knowledge you bring to us. I want to to container garden along with some tower planters. I am 72 and somewhat disabled and have limitations. But you seem to always have us in mind. Bless you my friend! Now to figure out how to use this cloth since I can't put holes in the concrete! lol If you have suggestions greatly appreciated!

Great video John and interesting tools! I guess I have never completely bought into the idea that sun loving plants need to be in the sun all the time and vice versa. Sun damaged plants can recover if given some protection and a chance to recover. A person just needs to access the damage on the plant. I saved a bunch of plants at a greenhouse many years ago now with that thought. :) I have found even here in Minnesota we need some shade cloth in the summer. Being outside a lot in the sun to me seems to be way more intense the later few years here than it has been in the past. I know there are different levels of shade cloth. I have seen trees, plants, etc have burned leaves and I live in rural area. It doesn't it hurt to experiment and start out with lower percent of shade cloth. :)

Hi John. I live at 1000M (3000ft) above sea level. It gets fairly hot here in July and August but not usually super hot, however i think my problem is the intensity of the sun here, many of my vegetables seem to stop growing during these months so i thought i would try shade cloth this year for many of them, the concept is to try to simulate the weather in the spring where the sun is less powerful and things grow fast. Especially since we have a short season and planting here starts mid May. That means things go in pretty late and they are not necessarily that big by July which is when things tend to stop growing due to the suns intensity.

I've had great experience with white shade cloth (40%), especially in the Winter. I wonder if the aluminate would blocked out too much sun and warmth in the winter time.

A shade net greenhouse is way better than a plastic greenhouse. Some of the advantages of a shade house include being cheaper, being more durable, being more effective in summer, being safer to farm workers as it has great ventilation. Its also easier to build or repair. For most horticultural crops such s tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, green vegetables, runner beans, strawberries and bell peppers, a 40% white shade cloth is the best.

Only thing the thrived last year was my okra which lives heat!! I've decided with 110 heat index I need some type of shade cloth to have veggies to grow in Texas. 😢

I'm in basically desert Australia and ordering everything to shade cloth my front yard as a trial to try lower heat, help the grass grow and retain more moisture, 3.66m wide cloth then 3m gap then cloth, gap, cloth. Will be interesting to see if it helps.

I used ground cover and I was able to cut from a single planting of Mesclun from June through...now (6A NE Ohio). Just had to be on top of covering and removing everyday during peak sun.

John, I stopped by and subbed..great info. I had an idea and wanted to confirm if a shade cloth in a low tunnel and misters may help me grow lettuces in peak sun. My goose ate my wife’s romaine...sooo it inspired me to look outside the box for a second try in Nebraska 90-95 degree 75+ humidity for the next couple weeks...possibly month. Thanks for the alumicloth suggestion.one thought on your summary remark regarding only shading during peak of day. Try measuring the curve of sun exposure and place the cloth in a way that only blocks the sun at that time directionally. Hope it helps.

Is the shade cloth fabric tight enough to keep bugs out ? I used a bug net last year and it worked perfect but the plants still get fried in the texas heat. Also wonder if it would be ok to completely in close my raised bed with this shade cloth like I did the bug net or if it will keep the heat trapped inside ?

Also, I just checked Amazon for the Aluminet shade cloth and have no idea at to select. There is a 40%. 70%, 90%, etc. Several colors as well. Can you please help narrow this down? I just received 50% agfabric and going to return it after watching this video but I need to have something to shade my veggies. Thanks!

I use shade cloth to keep pests away. deer, rabbits. poachers etc..even tho some rats chew through it / also monsoon rains w/intense wind are reduced by shade cloth...and hail which will wipe out a crop in minutes...on and on and on....and being able to retract it and double up with cable and pulleys. A bit pricey but with this climate change indispensable if you are a serious grower......"that being said" keep up the good work John

I live out in Phoenix, ive been using a regular 30 precent shade cloth, it seems to protect my foliage but my flower production seems to be reduced, i didnt know about the aluminet shade cloth definitely gonna try that, the only one i see on Amazon is 70 precent is that too much?

how are you my friwnd i love your videos they are great -now i need some help with your knowledge --i live in costa rica 1000 meters over see level temperatures normally around 30C day time i am planning on putting over the garden a roof of polycarbonate celular to stop some sunshine it is uv protected -but i do not know what color could be better they have many color some to stop light up to 80% some let light pass up to 85% colors are green-white-smoke-blue--yellow-orange--clear--and the one i like ambar but i do not know if reducing sunshine will kill my plants ? what do you think can you help me -thanks

Hi John .I realy enjoy watching your videos., would like to ask for your help to solve a big problem. I live in Crete Greece and want to set up a perminant shade net over my dragon fruit pantation .cause it gets very hot here in the summer.with temperatures rising up from 38°C to 45°C. So my question for you is, what would be the most ideal shade net i should be useing,a 30%,40% or 50% shade .Please help me, God Bless you and your love ones.Thank you.

Light colours can reflect it if you can’t afford illimunate white or off white can give you a similar result

Greens contain vitamin K - two, which clots the blood. I know a woman who ate greens every day and who had a massive stroke caused by a blood clot, caused by too much K2..

This is now 2022 of June! Since may had 109 to 100 temps in Abilene, TX. No rain! I put up shade cloth, best thing I Ever done! No trees! And plants do grow under the tree! Also covers my sitting area to rest!! My plants are growing waaaay better under shade cloth! I use plain black shade cloth!

Here in Hawaii, I'm needing shade cloth despite high temperature only in the high 80s or very low 90s. The sun is too strong during the summer time. Especially my cucumbers and squash leaves were wilting and burning despite moist soil.

Can you please talk about whether these different materials degrade? In our part of the Sonoran Desert, the high heat, intense UV and winds dry things out super fast, and they breakdown and become pollutants. There is plastic everywhere here already.

AHJ George I live in the Chihuahua desert. I have had the big box store light colored tan and dark green shade cloth for over 5 years. I prefer the tan, but neither are in decline. Because of our winds, I find a frame is necessary. I use a soldering iron to put holes in the cloth. It acts like a plastic and fuses together. I use Dacron type cords to tie to the frame. I tried stapling it a few times, but again the winds would pull those out. 73

My 2 year old shade cloth (black one) has not degraded yet. I suppose it depends on the quality of the cloth. If is not UV treated (or uses inferior treatment) it will break down more quickly. Most plastic at some point will break down. If this is your highest concern, you can use something like white sheets, or burlap that may shade more or less.

180 degrees in the Arizona direct sun i used an IR gun. Some yards get direct sun 12 hours a day enough to kill a agave plant or a barrel cactus

I would like to know also! Getting ready to buy one and although I too live in Las Vegas, it was 114 degrees yesterday and I have a wooden fenced-in in patio Garden that's between the two two-story buildings. It's even hotter there. I have different sizes of old scrap burlap with percentages of shade protection until I can get this one you are showing us. However the size is going to be a challenge as I want it all in one piece big enough to keep the cats from jumping over the fence!
