Best sports car ever!? 2023 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS review: Epic engine teams with unreal handling

Its SUVs might be more prominent on roads these days, but Porsche built its brand on sports cars. And there's arguably NO more exciting sports car in its current model range than the 2023 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS.
While its name may be a mouthful, the two-seat coupe itself isn't thanks to its small footprint and light weight. And with the GT4 RS' truly epic 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat six-cylinder petrol engine and seriously wild aerodynamic elements thrown into the equation, you've got one hell of a recipe for fun.
Luckily for CarsGuide Senior Journalist Richard Berry, he got the keys to the ultimate 718 Cayman for a week and put it through its paces to find out if it really is as damn good as it sounds on paper. Spoiler alert: it's all that - and more. Enjoy!

They aren’t magnesium wheels but the standard alloy wheels. The magnesium wheels will set you back another $30,000 🫣

I just took delivery of a 2023 911 and have a 718 Spyder arriving in a couple of months - both manual. PDK, I can't deal with that. This car and the Spyder have both been discountinued. I think I will buy one of these and have to accept the PDK.

The PDK on the GT4RS is from the previous GT3RS and is insanely fast, and wonderfully intuitive.

You pose the question "Is this the best sports car ever?" then give the car a score of only 8.4. Firstly it is an RS car and it acts and behaves like an RS car. Of course it is firm. It is an RS car. But its no less of a daily driver's car than my 981 GT4. The RS features may be best felt on a racetrack, but around town you can enjoy the stability and soundtrack. I have done 6,000 kms in my GT4RS and the reason I would be happy to daily drive it is the car is so amazing you want to get in it as often as possible. Its just the idiots in the parking lots who make me think twice. You compare the RS to a non RS car - the GT3. Compare it instead to the new GT3RS which is epic but far more money. Despite that, Top Gear testers BOTH said they would prefer the GT4RS. I priced a GT4RS with bucket seats (included), lift, special colour, extra leather on road in Australia at $383,000. I priced a GT3 with bucket seats, lift (included), special colour, extra leather on road at $484,000. So, I have saved $101,000 and on that basis alone the GT4RS is a better buy than the GT3. The Weissach pack is just expensive window dressing (and the car you drove did not have the magnesium wheels as stated).

I also have one, and you forgot to mention one thing, the GT3 is bloody boring compared to the GT4RS 😂 The GT4RS is only about one thing, and that’s to be the most fun Porsche ever made🎉🎉🎉 It’s a true hooligan❤❤❤

@@lav1daloca you can twin turbo a civic and smoke everything but that’s not the point. Porsche is on a different level in terms of quality, driver engagement and feel. Sure the z06 could be faster in a straight line but who cares it’s not all about speed. The plaid smokes every vette and porsche but it’s junk compared to it.

@@lav1daloca. Yeah but the Z06 is so ugly that only a mother could love. And think someone who affords these cars care about $1000 oil changes? I do my own for about $130 not much different then a Toyota.
