Thank you for posting this!!! Soooo much a$$ pain could've been saved for me through the years. 30 minutes with a stud finder that needs a new home with the rest of the garbage. Watch this 2 1/2 min vid and have my ceiling joists found in about the same time it took me to watch. 👍🏻

I use line chalk to mark screws, which sweeps off with ease. It sure makes working overhead no big deal...

The strength of the magnet will determine that ultimately. The popcorn is not a thick layer in my experience, so I would think it would still pick up fasteners? I'd give it a go!

Overhead installation on a ceiling with a stud finder is one difficult task when you have no clue where to start... This method will get your joists identified in minutes so you can breeze through what seems impossible!

What about a ceiling with furring strips. You could be following a strip and not a joist. Joist run one direction and furling runs opposite. Any tips?

It's a mechanic's pick up tool. Most big box stores or auto parts stores have them.

Know a way to find them when you have a plaster on wood lathe instead of drywall ceiling?

It does not work well on a thick popcorn ceiling. :(

I have a texture on my ceiling. It doesn’t work either. After drilling about 30 holes in the wall, I said f it and cut a good sized rectangle in the ceiling. Found out the joist run perpendicular to the wall. I’ll have to repair the cut but at least now I know exactly how they run. I could have went in the attic too. I just got tired of mucking around and wasting time.

How will this find ceiling joists when joists don't have screws or metal material at their lower section?

Screws holding the drywall sheets up

But will this work if you have a metal sound barrier behind your ceiling drywall?
@JQUICK213 жыл бұрын
That might work if you have paper thin ceiling dry wall...LMAO

Doesn't work on popcorn Apartment ceilings. Drywall is hung from sheetmetal bridging attached to joists. Joists don't touch the drywall.

Oh my word! It actually works. I used some small but really strong magnets we use for our magnet board. I never believe these things until I see it for myself. And godammit...it really does.

The problem with this is the joists could be going in one direction or another... example, if you find screws/nails 16” apart... it could be that it’s all one joist they’re screwing the drywall into, with 16” spacing. Or it could be a bunch of different joists 16” apart. This is a good SUPPLEMENTAL thing, but you need to back it up with a STUD FINDER to confirm absolutely where the joists are. You don’t wanna risk caving in someone’s house, on the chance someone installed nails/screws in a coincidental pattern
