So battery life has always been one of the most important parts for a bike computer, so I was very curious about how the new Garmin Edge 530 would perform, especially since it's supposed to last a bit longer than the previous 520. And I have to say... I'm impressed.

4:36 can you please tell about this bag? Did you carry it with you for whole 250km? Is that some kind of rule in Japan for public transport?

Yes, you need a bag for the bike when traveling on Japanese trains. I use a Fairmean bag ( instagram.com/fairmean?igshid=1gftk1vcudzp3 ) which is as small, light compact as it gets. Hand made by a good friend of mine who used to love in Japan.

About the bags, since the conversation has opened... I once saw a guy using a velosock type bag on a train in Japan. More convenient than trying to wrestle a bike in to a bag, but is this generally allowed or just a one off hooligan?

Never going to beat his current setup for minimalism, but my k-edge mount that attaches two of the front clamp bolts of my ENVE stem comes close! 26g, and better still quite seamless packaging. It's about as far forward as the Garmin mount, and nicely centered. Plus the extended battery or camera or headlight can mount beneath to the same bracket.

Thanks for the tips. Here are my recent experiences from the everesting challenge attempt for those who may be interested. I turn off the WiFi and Bluetooth, turn off the background light (brightness 0%), turn off the navigation and warnings. I had three sensors - a dual-side power meter, heart rate, and speed. The result - 62% of the battery after 16 hours.

Firstly, huge fan of the style & chill atmosphere of your video's man. I definitely don't get as much battery life out of my old Edge 1000... it had a long rough life and only lasts for 9 hours or so nowadays. But I do recall switching to GPS only mode made a huge difference, probably the biggest gain you can get apart from running dark screen mode. Those basically were my "hacks" for still being able to use this device on my longer rides. I know... way past time to upgrade, but meh, it still works. :)

Are the batteries not replaceable? I mean, even if it's not plug-n-play, I know here in the US, we have tons of little shops that will crack open, say, an iPhone and replace the battery. I would imagine someone must be doing that for Garmins.

"That is not going on my bike". Burst of laughter.... Love it. I've been in the same boat with choosing a new computer and all I got was a headache. Now... This is incredible battery life from Garmin. In the past they use "up to..." Which means anywhere from zero. With the 530 they state "typically 20 hrs". Big difference (legally) but seasoned Garmin users don't believe them. However this is living proof from a highly respected cyclist (you) that Garmin can deliver a viable product. Thanks for your video.

In my experience, battery life is very dependant on usage: 1) screen backlight will drain battery VERY fast 2) low temperature usage will reduce your battery life SIGNIFICANTLY (down to 1h @ -15 C) 3) map mode will drain battery faster 4) lots of sensors will drain battery faster But i would like to say, that my Edge 800 is still fine in 2019, although i ride 300 hours per year. Typically i dont charge it for commute (1.5-2 h a day total) but charge it before EVERY training session and club rides (you have to be on strava, right?). I use HR, cadence and power sensors. As for mount, i use k-edge mount. Really love it for low mount, for gopro/flashlight option and ability to disassemble it for transporting without taking bar part off (if you pack your bike for a plane, for example).

That makes sense. I'm doing a 175km ride later this year and I want my 530 to last the whole ride. I hope that it won't go flat as I use a cadence, heart rate and speed sensor and I plan to have the screen on all the time.
@roilev
@roilev 4 жыл бұрын
my 520 didn't care if the backlight was 100% or off. In the sub-zero temps it lasted longer than me, so no issues there either. Using the map screen halved the battery life. And if I was following a pre-recorded route, the battery life was halved again. I couldn't do a 6h XCM race with all these features on, I had the track loaded halfway (I knew the track before, and I was riding in the group) and I was switching to the map screen just for a second. And still, it died minutes from the end.

I really couldn't care much less about all the training data and really just want something that is going to last a really long time while navigating on bikepacking trips around here through the desert. Everyone talks about the Roam's ease of use but I really dislike how it seems to all be tied to cellphone use.

I did also some tests with my 830, sharing the same battery than the 530 (except touchscreen). Sensors powermeter, heartrate, GPS+Glonass, BT and phone connected, backlight permanent at 20%. I had round about 5,5% battery drain per hour. So round about 18h to go with one full charge so. I did this test, to find out, if I could get through an 24h ride Marathon, with a whole night riding (thats why I tested the backlight at "permanent on". Unfortunately no luck to get through a 24h ride with "backlight on" but def. a big improvement. I bought the charge power pack for these kind of rides thru nights, sure that my headunit won't run out of battery.

I use an Edge 530 with Garmin’s Speed and Cadence Monitors as well as a heart rate monitor (HRM Tri) on every ride. Connected to my phone and on a couple of occasions to the Varia ut800 (I dont use smart mode anymore it kills the light after about 1:30 min.) My unit is new less than 5 months of use and the battery life is excellent, I think the lowest its been on any of my longer rides 112 miles max has been 80% and I usually make sure its charged 100% before I go out. The one problem I have run into a couple times is that it either stays in sleep mode or glitches on power down and drains the battery over night or however long I waited between rides..

Looks like garmin have been getting it right for a change. I'm a wahoo user and very happy with the original elemnt for both day and night rides on and off road so maps are important. The arrival of wahoo has raised the game for garmin so we users are all winners . I'm going to upgrade to the roam at some point but won't be considering garmin due to the complexity of upload and download of routes and the bombproof software. Keep on posting the VIDS. Hi from wet and windy england
@ridesofjapan
@ridesofjapan 4 жыл бұрын
The complexity of getting routes on there was one reason I was looking at going with wahoo for a long time... but I was really happy to discover that RWGPS (where I make all my routes) have made a Garmin connect IQ app... having installed that on the 530 it’s super simple to get routes onto the device without having to connect it to a computer. Still, Wahoo has that phone to head unit integration a lot more polished than Garmin from what I’ve seen, but super happy the 3rd party services are taking up the slack. Wahoo getting I to the game as definitely the best thing that could happen for us consumers.

I used it for long days in the saddle on bikepacking transgermany following the race track with no saving options and got around 20h operation time of the Garmin 530 until battery warning appears. The saving mode works well, but not for a complicated offroad race track. On my mtb I use a sram mount. Don't know the weight... On the gravel the stem mount is the best option even if I would prefer tyraps insted of this rubber bands...

Magellan/Mio cyclo served me well but the battery life on mine doesn't last past 2.5 hours. K-Edge may be a good option. Also, are you using a Wireless module on your Di2 system? I like to monitor what gears I'm in when I'm riding... but I find that this is affecting the battery life of the Di2 battery... (I charge now every 3-4 weeks). Not sure if it's also affecting the Edge 530 battery... although my rides are never more than 5-7 hours.

Dude, first of all: nice riding!! The Garmin 530 has been great so far, I picked it up in August, also replacing the 520 after 5 years or so and a battery dying every day. Recently did a bikepacking race, speed, cadence and heart sensor hooked up (ANT+ only, the Bluetooth will kill the battery!) and had a map uploaded of the route which was 400km and 10K elevation www.strava.com/activities/2667280405. In the ride I had some bad luck with weather and had to stop a few hours due to thunder, slept a few hours and moved on again. After 28 hours of riding (screen auto-brightness, no Tones, ClimbPro turned on) I had to charge it. It was amazing and made the ride more comfortable, too!! Make sure to update the firmware and get all the settings in correct, then it will work like a charm! Keep up the videos, especially the home mechanic ones, they're very helpful! Cheers

Willie Y I track distance, elevation and just general gps recording of the rides I do. Tobias. In a previous comment I mentioned being on the fence with a new computer and yesterday I chose the 530 on the strength of this video. But... the setup had me close to violent frustration wondering if the Bolt should have been chosen. With Lama's help I got through after 2 days of fiddling and my passive self came back. @@ridesofjapan I've been a long time Rwgps/phone user with phone screen off mode but I do like to glance at stats for my mental analytics without touching screens etc. Other thing I wanted was to move a ride from my phone to the 530 for long distance audax rides where the initial routes had been modified and you find out at the start line. Data screens had me conflabulated. It took a few restarts and some video tutorials before I started to get the gist of their terminology and put data where I wanted it. After 2 days of mumbling and grumbling I finally got it and came back to this post to see if you had any regrets. For me I'm happy now. In 10 days time I'll be doing 2 back to back 200k rides and hoping the 530 will see me through with perhaps a small top-up. I'm estimating 30hrs battery life.
@ridesofjapan
@ridesofjapan 4 жыл бұрын
Rick Harker I see.. setting up the screens for the first time is definitely not easy to figure the first time I imagine... I’ve learnt that over 10years ago on the garmin 500. Btw, if you’re a RWGPS user you should install the RWGPS connectIQ app on the 530, super simple to download routes you have on you RWGPS account to the device. Which was always my main compliant with the garmins.

Heart monitor connected. 2 screens of data collecting. Following a course.Temperature ranging from 5C-12C. no battery save modes. 10% screen. Saturday, 11.5 hours total time. Battery remaining 77%. GOSH! Sunday 12hours of shitty conditions, 74% battery left. I am overwhelmed and super surprised, so much so I need to find out if Garmin can share what they have done to super improve this little gem. Oh! And thank you for your review. Without it I may have made a different (regrettable) choice.

Hey - can any confirm that their turn notification is not stuck at the value it first appears? Mine does - it will say 50m to the turn and stay that way even i exit the turn.
