Do you want to know the best tides for catching inshore fish like redfish, snook, seatrout, black drum, and flounder? Want to know the #1 mistake that most anglers make when it comes to reading a tide chart?
The answer might surprise you.
Click here to see the full blog post on the best fishing tides: www.saltstrong.com/articles/b...
As you'll see in this "best fishing tides" video, Luke Simonds from Salt Strong reveals that in many cases, the tides are secondary to current (moving water).
He also talks about the two biggest mistakes that many inshore fisherman make when it comes to picking the best tides.
Long story short:
You want the most current possible. That is what triggers feeding fish. Once you learn how to read tide charts to figure out when the most current will be in your area (when the tide is steepest).
So the next time you are looking for "the perfect tide," make sure to figure in current first.
Any questions?

With 50 years of research I’ve determined that the best time to catch reds or any fish for that matter is when they’re biting 😜

Thanks for the kind words about this tide tutorial. Glad to see that you enjoy Otis' antics out on the boat. He certainly doesn't help in the fish catching aspect, but he certainly makes every trip more of an adventure:)

Thanks for the info about tides, it's locations and seasonal changes that really have my attention. That dog is so much like my red setter that loved being my fishing partner. At the beach she stole fish from a fisherman's bucket who was pretty disappointed when I returned his dog bit catch. After 25 years I still miss the most loyal fishing partner I ever had. I would give Dogood the occasional fish that made her so happy.

Thanks for the kind words. You might reconsider the comment about Otis being a good fishing partner after you see what he did to me this morning when I had a ~38 inch snook on during a rainstorm... it was total chaos:) Video coming out soon.

Hi, I started frequently fishing at a tidal creek under the bridge right next to my university, like just hundreds of feet off campus lines. When I look under the bridge at the creek, I can easily see whether the tide is flowing in or out. The tidal creek flows like an inland river, and the area kind of looks like an inland river under a bridge in a forest, except that's its an inshore, saltwater environment and the current flow direction can change back or forth depending on the tide. Because the tidal current flow on the creek is just as fast as a river current in a river up North, I can easily identify how fast the tide is flowing and whether the tide is going in or out. I fish at a bank adjacent to the bridge and at another bridge they have for fishing in the mangrove pond. There, I caught juvie Snappers and a Blue striped grunt so far. I have a couple of questions to ask you. I use a jig with a piece of shrimp tail as the trailer. When I cast the jig, I let the current take the jig to wherever the current is flowing at that time. So, if for example, at low tide when the current is headed for a mangrove and fallen trees brought down from Irma, would it be a good idea to let my jig flow at the current towards that area?

Nice efforts, nice video, nice boat, nice dog but there is the best tides for fishing.
@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, there absolutely are tides the generally outperform others assuming all else is held equal. The point of the video was to highlight the fact that tides aren't everything, and that it is still possible to catch fish even if you're not able to fish during the optimal tide... it's all about making the best out of whatever time you can spend on the water. Fish On!

Just thought I would let you know I started out like you not knowing much coming down from the north and fresh water fishing. I’ve learned so much from your videos and website and wanted to say thanx. Here’s my tip to you for kayaks. Get stinky pants fish stringer and a piece of pvc and drill two holes in it next to each other. Zip tie that to something and now you can string fish super fast and start the next cast faster than a gunslinger no tying knots or anything. Just run it up run it down and it’s snug. Also you can see my chair I rigged, I won a trip with 30MilesOut and the episode is called ripnslash reds. Again thanx for everything.

I've had fertile fishing spots in Florida off the Halifax River Bulow Creek etc that have never failed in 30 years no matter what time of day no matter what tide no matter what the weather. But all of them did have moving water whether they were fed over an oyster bar by a brackish Creek or water was rushing between two islands in the middle of the intercoastal. Naturally, days some were better than others or nights. Sadly vollectively the fishing in Florida has dropped off considerably than it was 30 years ago.

I know this is an older comment, but you're spot-on. The fishing in FL is nothing like it used to be. Not even close. Amazing to see the negative changes happen in the span of one lifetime.

I noticed on my tide app it gives the h/l times but also flood ebb and slack and the times r different. Im not sure what the flood time and ebb meams ic its different from the h/l times.
@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong 5 жыл бұрын
The tide projection is water height (vertical movement). And the ebb/flood is the current (horizontal movement). The current generally lags the height, but the time difference is dependent on the hydrodynamics of the body of water.

No pro like Luke and Simon here, But my “ best time / tide in St Augustine where we have an average tide twice a day is .......5’ to 6’ change is near the inlet just before and just after low tide...Not when the tide is the fastest... I try to follow the bait schools along the shore. At or near high tide I try to find the shallowest water I can get in to or as the tide falls, the narrowest creek outlet to the ICW... FWITW.. I am also a fan of the lunar schedules..... Fish know when the dinner bell is ringing
@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the best time to fish the passes and inlets with very strong current flow is often closer to the turns of the tides. For most other spots with less current flow, the peak current flow period is generally going to have the most feeding.

what about moon!!
@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong 6 жыл бұрын
The gravitational force of the moon is the core driver of the tides, so they are totally related. And since the biggest tidal swings are during the full and new moon phases, those two sections of the lunar phase is typically the most active.

I didn't measure the 3rd snook from this video, but it was lower slot (if not just barely under), which I was happy about given the weak tides and the fact that it was a ~2 hr trip in the middle of the day. Here's a post from an exploration trip to Clearwater showing a bigger snook caught while exploring some new waters over in Clearwater in case you haven't yet seen it: www.saltstrong.com/fishing-tip/clearwater-fishing-report/
