Fascinating information in the video thank you for that, I am curious you mentioned that your Husband "Used" Rosetta to begin with implying he doesn't use it currently in his learning, is there any reason behind this? To answer your question I wanted to learn Japanese so that I can order JDM car parts off JDM websites, truly appreciate the Japanese indi music scene and Anime is pretty cool too I guess

I would say that the big caveat in regards to watching anime for listening practice is that compared to live action dramas, anime characters are more likely to use highly stylized speech patterns that you just won't encounter in real life. I've seen learners copy some of those speech patterns without knowing better, and it's just weird.

@c4ss4e4d
@c4ss4e4d 4 жыл бұрын
Awesome advice! My suggestions are: 1. Start with hiragana, don't get into kanji or katakana too quickly. The best way to learn hiragana in my experience is honestly just writing out all the characters yourself, don't just look at a character and write out the romaji (standard alphabet) version of the character. As you alluded to, writing out or seeing the romaji is just going to make your head first go to the romaji instead of actually just reading the character. It might be boring to do this, as some want to jump straight into words, but this way you're actually learning the language instead of learning by word association. 2. My reason for not suggesting you learn katakana (the character set for English/foreign words) too quickly is in part that you will sometimes assume that you can just speak out as if all English words can be spoken in katakana instead of taking the time to learn the Japanese words. Not only that but it can also be slightly overwhelming and you may mix your katakana and your hiragana together, and in general the hiragana is much more of the foundation. 3. Once you start to feel more comfortable with the characters is when you can really start building up your basic vocabulary. And integrating the kanji of those words as well. And do it like you showed, completely remove the English words from the equation. And if you are watching anime try to watch an episode without subtitles at all once and just see how much you can understand. Then you can go back and watch it with subtitles and see how much you actually understood. 4. When you have a grasp of your hiragana and want to get really into learning more kanji, set a weekly goal of how many you want to learn per week, and stick to them. There's thousands of Kanji, and it is not something you just learn in a month. And if you look at a Japanese manga you may actually see certain kanji with their hiragana version on the side for more uncommon characters. The Japanese don't know every single kanji either, so they even need a slight nudge to help them figure out certain characters. Hope that helps :)

Based on my experience i can recommend: Learning hiragana Learning katakana Complete learning the "writing systems" by using the book "remembering the kanji" Then using a text book as "genki" or "minna no nihongo" And immersing yourself in any way possible.

@@yuratsuni I'm still in the process of learning japanese, but I'm learning from my mistakes. The book that you choose is not that important. They are all gonna teach the same basics, but if you're looking for recommendations, the most used by japanese learning community are "genki" and "minna no nihongo". As for hiragana, i personally used some apps. Turning it into a sort of game was really helpful. Good apps are: Hinative ( here you can ask native speakers about any doubt that comes to your mind) Hellotalk (here you can interact with native to chat) Wanikani (a used to learn kanji) Kanji tree (an app to practice kanji) Nhk easy news (app to read easy japanese articles) Nihongo con teppei ( a good podcast for beginners) Japanese pod 101 ( a podcast that uses english to teach). Viki rakuten (free app and websites where you can watch dramas with subtitles) The most important thing is to immers as much as possible into japanese.

My brother studied languages at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in California. The pace of study was intense. Students had to master the language course in 36-64 weeks. Psychologically it was very difficult, but fortunately he was helped by Yuriy Ivantsiv's book "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages”. The book " Polyglot Notes" became a desk book for my brother, because it has answers to all the problems that any student of a foreign language has to face. I started learning Japanese so I can watch anime without subtitles and so that when I visit Japan next year, I won't need a translation app to be able to communicate with the locals. I plan on visiting Tokyo of course where there is a bit of English but I plan on spending most of my vacation in the rural areas where people don't speak English. I personally use human Japanese and lingodeer :-) those are two really good apps.

I've had a fascination with anime from a very early age (digimon and pokemon were my first two anime) and as I grew that interest grew into interest in Japan and Japanese culture as a whole. When I was in highschool one of my best friends had one of the group of Japanese exchange students staying with her. So we hung out a lot while they were with us. And some of my favorite memories of that time was going out bowling with them and they taught us a few Japanese phrases. Since then I wanted to learn the language especially since I want to visit Japan eventually and I was raised with the premise that if you go to a country even if its just for a short while you should at least try to learn a bit of the language.

My grandmother is from Kyuushuu, so I grew up surrounded around Japanese food, traditions, mannerisms, etc., despite being born and raised in the United States. I never really learned any language other than English, though, so I'd often hear Japanese or whatever other language and just be confused. Some of my family is also pretty shaky at English, so there can be communication barriers at times, too. I got interested in my heritage and their respective cultures, admittedly the largest being Japanese culture. Food, history, video games, anime, whatever. I guess I decided that learning the languages of my heritage and interests would be fun, so recently I started learning Spanish and Japanese. My plan is to study the two Genki textbooks and watch anime for now, and, if I'm feeling up to it, study for the JLPT N3! 家にいて一生けんめい勉強!

I'm a hafu and lived in Chiba for a little, but mostly lived in the US. I'm good with speaking and listening, but ughh reading is the worst. I'm practicing and studying as well with the extra time. Instead of relying on English subs, it might be better to have Japanese subs to force your reading skills. Then go back and watch with English to fully get all the little details. I haven't done this with anime, cuz I'm too lazy to rewatch but I've done this with some KZfaq videos (Ask Japanese Cathy Cat, Chiaki, etc.) I'ma need it since I'm moving to Okinawa to be a music teacher in August... 二人で頑張りましょう!

Because of that I'd love to learn it so u can watch Anime without relying on Subs and when I eventually go to Japan it will make the experience that much better. Also I love Nintendo. 😁

I've always liked anime, and I would practice basic hiragana and katakana with Duolingo every once in a while, but what really got me to want to invest time and energy into learning Japanese is music. J-pop and Vocaloid are two of my favorite genres of music, and a while back I discovered a Japanese artist named Eve whose music made me feel so... full. I know that's a weird way to describe it, but when I listen to his stuff I always feel so much emotion filling up my chest and head. It's truly a powerful experience that I haven't really had with any other music. So, I made up my mind that I wanted to learn Japanese so that I could start listening to his music without subtitles and still be able to understand and appreciate his art! (and some of it may be anime as well)

I tried Rosetta Stone when I first started learning Japanese, and it was great for vocabulary, but I found it lacking in the grammar side. Because of the no translation method, there's no explanations for grammar rules, so you are left to deduct the rules, not the most efficient way to learn grammar.

I read this novel called Young Samurai about a British boy named Jack Fletcher who washed up on feudal japan after his entire merchant ship was killed by wako and is then is adopted by a Samurai called Masamoto Takeshi(based of on the real life Miyamoto Musashi) and he has to navigate his way through the traditions of the japanese people, the strains of training to be a Samurai as the adopted son of one and protecting a precious navigational tool which not only is his last keepsake of his father but also his only chance to sail back to england, back to to his now alone little sister Jesse. It is the book that really sparked my interest in japanese culture and traditions. Oh and also anime.
