I used to work with a gentleman who flew the A-20 with the 47th BG, 12th USAAF, in North Africa and Italy. He received the Silver Star for a mission he led over Italy in 1943. The plane 'Dirty Gertie' (shown at 11:24) was from his squadron. Sadly Jim passed away in 2011. RIP, Jim. And thank-you for your service. As a side note, Jim's wife, Kate, was an army nurse who also served in Europe. In fact she was among one of the first units to enter the Concentrations Camps after they were liberated. She didn't talk about it often, but when she did, the stories were heart-wrenching.

My great UNCLE served in the south PACIFIC during WW2… The 5th AIR FORCE… He developed film from BEFORE and AFTER , the A- 20 HAVOC BOMB RAIDS… They filled A- 20s with CAMERAS… They were the first squadrons to eliminate the bombadier with 4 50cal machine guns, and skip bomb and strafe airfields and harbors…FIREPOWER

Love this aircraft. There's some awesome footage of Free French low level stuff. Have a model of it in 1/32 on order. Will paint it as 89SQN aircraft STEAK & EGGS. Next year when I'm in Cairns I'll go visit its wreckage. Informative presentation, I was unaware they mounted such light MGs. But I wish the narrator knew what he was talking about & not just reading the script verbatim.

The plane had a tendency to drop out of the sky if pulled into avery tight turn. They never fixed it until the later A26.

Yes, ive read that, and also, care had to be taken with the cooling flaps as they did not allow enough airflow over the wing when fully open, resulting in loss of lift. Very bad situation on takeoff !

The DB-7 was originally purchased by the French. The British took over the order after France fell and christened it the “Boston”. The French DB-7s had to be modified for British service such as changing the gauges to British Imperial measurement and reversing the direction of the throttles. French aircraft throttles were designed to pull them back to INCREASE speed! Despite what you say the A-20 was designed from the outset as an attack aircraft, not a heavy fighter. In the Pacific, the A-20s of the 3rd Attack Group were modified by replacing the bombardier nose with a solid nose of forward-firing .50 caliber machine guns. This was achieved by Captain, later Colonel, P. I. “Pappy” Gunn developing the technique to make the change without changing the plane’s Center of Gravity. Gunn would make similar changes to the B-25.

@bacarnal
@bacarnal Жыл бұрын
@@Bidimus1 I would tend to agree with later variants. The A20 was also able to carry auxiliary fuel tanks and the ranges seem to be comparable on the earlier versions of both. Take off runs also seem to be comparable. Speed of the Havoc was better and it carried less crew, which are some of my reasons for favoring the A20.
@flyingwombat59
@flyingwombat59 Жыл бұрын
Nope. The A-20 would require auxiliary tanks just to get China reducing the bombload to almost nothing. Yes, so would the B-25. But, the Mitchell had a larger bombload. The secondary mission of the Doolittle Raiders was to stay in China as a medium bomber force. OK. one squadron. It would have been a start.

@shawnbeckmann1847 actually you're wrong, and the original commenter is 100% wrong. The model G and the model j were both made in specific variants for use as night fighters. And I might add they were extremely successful and there were several dozen Pilots who became Aces as Strictly flying the A20 . They were used in Europe both to nightcap the German night fighter airfields, along with patrolling above English bases protecting returning bombers from prowling German night fighters. In the Pacific The Fifth Air Force commonly used them to go after night Intruders from the japanese.. so contrary to what you think they had a very long extensive history as fighters. They also were considered a light bomber and basically fulfilled every single mission that the mosquito flew, contrary to what you might think. Honestly the only thing the original poster got right in this comment was it wasn't a mosquito he's very correct, it was an a-20 Havoc / Boston

Thanks for your correction. My uncle flew one in New Guiney, and survived 135 combat, mostly a few feet above water and ground, missions, and I thought he said they had fifty caliber guns, around 14 or 16. His skipper let them add more than usual. Most crews never survived their tour of duty.
