I think it is really important that you call it like you see it. When you say you weren't a fan of a certain place, everyone knows those are your impressions, not an edict from God. Those of us that will follow in your footsteps later can better choose where we want to go if what you say is honest and you are open about the challenges. Keep up the good work! Cheers

I agree. I wish every travel vlogger would state what time of year they visited a place. It would help give the viewers a better idea of how busy it is, what the weather is like, and how to dress (and pack) appropriately.

Double thumbs up for this idea. Weather can make all the difference to a visitor's experience of a place; everywhere looks better in sunshine! Likewise, a week of rain in Jan in Paris is expected (museums!) while a week of rain in Aug in the Gili islands can be more of a washout.

We are full-time travelers, too, currently in Kuala Lumpur in the same building where you stayed. We fell for the hype and booked five long weeks. We feel pretty much the same -- it's just not resonating with us. There is a great variety in food, but the traffic is horrendous and the area where we are is not at all walkable because of the weather and the difficulty crossing streets safely. We don't love Malaysian food, so we have to take Grabs nearly every day to the malls for a better selection (agree about the excellent Chinese food). Medical facilities here are world-class, but once we are done with our medical stuff, we may bounce out early. Next scheduled stop is Da Nang -- maybe we will head there early for some extra time in Hoi An. Thanks for your videos.

Yes, it was unfortunate as so many had said they loved it. Just showed us, once again, we are all looking for something a bit different. You will love Da Nang and Hoi An, the food it wonderful and has such a much more relaxed back feel from KL. Safe travels - Cheers!

We're happier in smaller cities/large towns - near to water. A cool sea breeze even in the tropics is preferable. A high-rise apartment, no flying insects, open windows - no aircon. A balcony overlooking the seaview - happy days!

Great timing. I am in Montenegro atm and am making up my mind between Albania, Tirana and Durres and Istanbul and Antalya, Turkey. I have to agree on the best beer - Czech being my number one. Had a Budvar today :). I also found a great brewery in the heart of Vienna around Xmas time. It is called '1516'. The atmosphere is great. I sat outside as they had the heaters on. Food is very tasty and affordable. Salzburg was on my list but didn't make it. I must visit. I wonder if you considered Budapest. I truly enjoyed the beauty of that shiny town, its bridges and Danube river, as well as the great food and specialty coffees. Great and cheap public transport although their people don't speak English much and aren't that often friendly. It depends. I truly fell in love with this city and Xmas markets etc. I also love Bangkok with its friendly people and great food. I might go back on the way back to Australia. Not a fan of muggy days either. I almost fainted once or twice. I was also there during the rain period. I also forgot to say that I find Munich boring after day 3 and I went three - four times in the past two years. I'd rather go to a Bavarian village or to Alps. Thank you for your great travel insights!

What a great overview, thanks! Isn’t it wonderful to be able to look back at all you’ve done and seen. Looking forward to the cost of living one as well, and can’t wait to hear what you thought about the repositioning cruise! I’m a bit claustrophobic and haven’t flown in years, and now you’ve got idiots punching flight attendants and windows blowing out 😬, so cruising to get to different areas of the world is sounding pretty doable. Yep, I’m ignoring legionnaires disease, norovirus, sea sickness and hurricanes… 😂 (PS I really appreciate all the comments and suggestions everyone else leaves on your vids, too - also such great info to add to my travel lists.)

Hello from the PNW... Grew up in Skagit Co., went to WWU and now live in the Tri-Cities. Thanks for the great summary of places you've been and I've added a few to our own bucket list. I apologize if you've covered this in another video, but one city that we really enjoyed traveling to this year was Ljubljana in Slovenia. After getting off a cruise ship, we took a Flixbus from Trieste and stayed for 4 days before heading to Vienna. We mostly stayed within the old town area. Good food, friendly people, and wonderful sights. One of the best farmer markets that we've seen. Btw, couldn't agree with you more about Vienna. What a beautiful city!

Great travel summary vlog!!! Bangkok has been my #1 city since first going there in the late 90s and then almost annually up until I came home in 2020. I love that city. Bangkok has excellent medical services. Back in the early 2000s, I went into Bumrungrad and got a medical card just in case I needed to use it. About a couple years later, I had a bad knee injury here at home, still went to Bangkok for the annual trip, and when I got there went to Bumrungrad and got excellent service and for under $40. I went there as it's closest to where I usually stay as it only took around 15 minutes to get there and was close to Nana BTS station and my serviced apartment building is right at Promphong BTS. Plus, Bumrungrad had a free shuttle service that dropped one off right at Nana BTS station and then one could just take the escalator up to the skytrain area which saved my injured knee on the way back to my serviced apartment building attached to Emporium Mall. I also found Chiangmai beautiful and interesting, but was there in the late 90s. I've heard, over the years, how much it has built up. I probably wouldn't recognize it. I really wish I had also gone to Vietnam and I had planned to go on the 2019/2020 trip while still in the region. But, decided against adding on another country and stuck with Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore for six weeks. It's too bad that you didn't get to Indonesia. Milan is wonderful. I'm glad you got there and also liked it. I love Milan. Florence is also great! And as for Istanbul, it was a wonderful experience. I hope to get back one day. Greetings from Los Angeles

funny that when i was digging around on KZfaq for Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Koh Samui videos last year, i stumbled across your channel. I enjoyed your content and although i had been to Thailand a few times before, its always good to see whats new and things others might have done. I then started searching Turkey for a trip in September and boom and there you guys were with another great video from that area and i absolutely fell in love the country. Istanbul is pure magic. The history, food and vibe are so good. Ditto for Goreme and Antalya. Then when i was searching for Andalusia videos, you guys popped up again and i got some good ideas for my trip there. Just like you said, southern Spain is fabulous. The food was beyond good and the scenery was gorgeous. Vietnam is next and i enjoyed your videos from there. Looking forward to getting the plans set for that one. Thanks for the fun content!

I was just in Bangkok (for a yearly health check) and stayed for about ten days. I have been to that city about 20 times (and twice to Chiang Mai) and still look forward to every time I visit. So many new things to explore each time!!! I've traveled around Turkey a bit (it's one of my favorite countries!), but never made it to Antalya (I always had an image of it being the Cancun for Russian oligarchs :-) but I can't wait to check it out now! I lived in Saigon for three years and loved visiting Hoi An multiple times. I would move back in a second. I wish I could give this video more than one thumbs up. ;-)

Loved this video. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on each place. I am headed to Vietnam in late February and was planning on staying in Da Nang for 2 months and using it as a home base to visit Hue, Hoi, My Son, etc but now I am thinking that I should spend more than 3 nights in Hoi An. Thanks for that. I was also looking at Istanbul last year as a longer layover from Toronto to Africa. Now from your review of 3 different places, I might look at going there on my next trip. I usually average 2-3 months at a time so that would be enough time to visit the 3 areas you mentioned. Thanks again for this very informative video. Happy New Year from Cozumel, Mexico.

Absolutely love all of your videos, and this one especially. Would you consider doing a video exclusively about health care in your travels? How to access it, apply for it, what to expect, e.g. My husband and I are retiring to a life of backpack travels in two years (we are selling everything as well) and really appreciate your expertise! Cheers from California!

Dropping in to say hello and thanks for your work! I found you when researching Türkiye and slow travel. We are from the Shuswap in the interior of BC so in your same time zone when you are home. We have been to many of the places you shared and have some similar experiences - we missed out on Cefalu in Sicily because there was a downpour (funny how us PNW folks still struggle with the rain!) and didn't love Palermo but really enjoyed Catania. Puglia was also a wonderful place full of many memories and Vienna is our favourite city. In March we are off to Paris for a long weekend then jumping to India on a food tour then wrapping up with a 5 day stop over in Tokyo. We are saving Türkiye for a longer trip next year (and perhaps a stay in Antalya! I'm interested not only in your upcoming finance video, but how you make your travel arrangements and if points is part of your system. Happy New Year - I'm now going to review some of your other videos for Eastern Europe!

I love your slow travel approach. We’re not full time travellers but we try to take the same approach to our 3 week trips. We find 3 nights is our minimum for most places, that gets us 2 full days to explore. Five nights is our minimum for bigger cities. I also take the neighbourhood approach to big cities. It has worked well for us in Paris, Lisbon, Rome, Lima, and Auckland. But like Carrie, I often appreciate the smaller cities and towns that we visit the most. Sintra, Portugal; Ollantaytambo, Peru; Nelson, NZ; Paestum, Italy and the Dordogne Valley in France, all come to mind. Türkiye is the country that keeps coming up as I consider our travel plans for this year. I was delighted to hear your thoughts about Antalya. I’d never heard of it before but I watched one of Karl Watson’s videos about the Türkiye tour he put together with Intrepid and Antalya instantly pinged my radar. Do you experience that when you’re planning where to go? I had it happen for Sintra - I saw a photo of the inverted tower at Quinta da Regaleira and had the immediate thought “I want to go *there* !” And that was the genesis of our trip to Portugal. That ping also happened for Ollantaytambo, Peru. I read a few things on the tripadvisor forums and I just knew Ollantaytambo had to be part of our itinerary for Peru.
@BrianandCarrie
@BrianandCarrie 4 ай бұрын
We do have that happen. Cappadocia is a good example of that. We will be back in Turkey this spring and very much looking forward to it. In the past you said you loved Romania and I do as well but no matter how much I search I can never find cheap flights how do you do it? Thank you both for such an amazing travel review of 2023 - we totally loved it! We're not quite at the stage of pulling the ER plug but hoping that perhaps this year might be the year (fingers crossed!). Our current plans are to travel about 6 months of the year (returning back home to Scotland in the Apr-Sept months to see our kids, friends and family & when the weather should be a 'reasonable'). However, can I ask how long in total do you normally return back home for and do you rent or stay with family/friends when there? We're currently grappling with the whole do we keep our house., down size or sell up completely and go full time travel. If we keep our current home, then we need to factor in various additional issues in terms of costs, maintenance, security etc. but this might also balance up with accommodation costs and time to reset, recharge and replan. We'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

Great question! We are usually home for 6 to 8 weeks in the winter and again in the summer. We are doing 3 house sits while home this time, but we still need to cover about 4 weeks, so we stay with family. As for owning a home, we didn't want to take on the responsibility of everything that you mentioned. We decided to sell everything and be debt-free. Not having a home base is something that would be nice to have but we simply couldn't afford to travel and keep a home. Don't hesitate to ask any other questions. Thank you for watching! ❤
