I tried that method, doesn't work. Then tried that with 90% isopropyl, worked ok, but I think the 2 together softened the clear coat, it was raised in sap spot. Just the isopropyl worked good, lot of work still though. Then I got tired, roof still needed doing after 8 hours, so tried thinners too slow still Then........ Gasoline!! Worked so fast. Just wiped down immediately after. No issues at all!!!!

I haven't tried it on the paint yet but it did work on my windshield.

Although this info is helpful . . it's important to know the active ingredients in the particular 'hand gel' that you found to be successful. I have tried some gel with 70% IPA and it did Nothing. I have since heard that it must be at least 90% IPA to help remove the tree sap. There are a lot of hand gels on the market that don't even have any IPA in it . . . so . . . this is why the active ingredients are important.

Scrubb free and wet wipes (walmarts parents choice) work great

Just use boiling water, trust me it works 100% all the time
