What's the best type of Oil Lighter?
Taking a look at what type of oil/petrol/gasoline lighters are the best for wind resistance and fuel retention, one of the big issues with oil lighters is that the fuel evaporates fairly quickly from them, compared to lighters with compressed gas such as butane lighters.
Zippo style lighters are much better at being wind resistant, however the lack of O-ring seals means that the lighters tend to lose most of their fuel within a week or two due to evaporation.
Peanut lighters are the opposite, the compact size and O-ring means the lighter can hold fuel for well over a month, however it has no protection from being blown out.

I filled up a peanut lighter...literally forgot about it in my truck...found it about 3 years later and it lit right up.

Well all are oil/petrol/gasoline based fuels.

I find that the fuel retention is determined by the surrounding temperature. Carrying a zippo in your pocket is warm and the fuel does not last as compared to keeping the lighter in a drawing in your house. Hot car not long, cool office drawer last much longer.

The good thing about a real star lighter is that its almost exactly the same as a zippo and its so cheap that when replacing a flint or wick its just cheaper to buy a whole new one.

I would advise getting the mark 2 peanut lighter , think I've said this before but the mark 2 has a flat bottom so you can sit it on a surface and use it as a candle It's just another awesome feature to an already awesome lighter , I do agree with the wind proofing behind slim to none but if you use a cupped hand it will protect it

Sounds good, yeah I imagine if they added windproofing that would add more size to the lighter and then mean it would get bigger or not be as good at retaining fuel.

And is refilling always messy? My bottle of zippo fuel always leaks from the tip and makes a mess stinking up the place

Maybe don't hold the bottle at as steep an angle? But it may just be a dodgy spout.

i have two peanut ones and the one that was left in a light place got its o-ring cracked/damaged(and the fuel gone) the one that was in a shadow in a box is ok.

Yeah UV can be quite irritating if you leave something in direct sunlight for too long.

You know to replace the flint on a clipper you can also just replace the actual flint inside that rod instead of the whole rod. there should be a little screw cap on the bottom to replace the flint.

I'd only want to replace the actual flint on the metal clippers with the round wheel, the hexagonal wheels on the cheaper clippers tend to misalign after a while.
