I just ordered one of these for a fun project.... For memory, is there somewhere in the BIOS where you set the speed? Or does it read the memory's specs and set it automatically? I guess I'll find out when it gets here in a couple of days, I got barebones and 48GB (24GB x2 which is something I've never seen before) and a Silicon Power US75 2TB SSD. Also ordered an OcuLink board and cable to play with, I have one of those Razer Core Thunderbolt GPU enclosures that I'm gonna see if I can pull the stock board from and convert it to hold the Oculink board, if not I'll rig something else up with it. I haven't looked to see how the Razer's power is run, but it's a standard ATX power supply so hopefully it has a SATA power connector, if not I have old 650w modular PSUs around.

I seen another review where the reviewer made it more powerfull by adding the octolink and hooking up an external gpu. He was then able to easily run AAA games on maximum settings with no issue. So you can upgrade this thing with externals if you want

I have a UM780 XTX and a UM790 pro. The 780XTX is the one I use all the time, mainly because its IO is better set up and the Oculink arrangement is unobtrusive and stays connected all the time even when I'm not using it(Oculink is not made for constant connecting and disconnecting). Neither are cheap but if I had to choose one over the other I would go with the UM780XTX.

UM790XTX is out now. It's everywhere on Aliexpress. I was in the same boat as you a couple of months ago, but I went ahead to build a very powerful intel i9 14900k desktop instead. For some reason, I still find myself coming back and watching endless reviews about this mini-PC. I just took the plunge and ordered a barebone version of UM780XTX on amazon UK yesterday (currently selling for £385.99). That price is the cheapest I have ever seen for barebone since launch. It will arrive today but I'm sure I won't open it for several months. I had to buy it because of the good deal on it.

I'm torn between this and the UM780xtx. Would the UM780 be a better choice for future proofing? I could add an EGPU at some point. Looking specifically at the 4070 Ti. Which would you recommend?
@yissnakklives8866
@yissnakklives8866 4 ай бұрын
You need to ask yourself what is your actual use case? Remember that egpu's are silly expensive. Just the chassis for one is >$200 and are usually 4-5x the size of the mini, then you need the GPU. As far as future-proofing, you can only upgrade the memory and storage on these - right now, the 8940HS is the top tier in this market but very few Mini makers have adopted it yet, since its really not that big an improvement and still is running the 780m iGPU. If you plan on gaming on a mini, I would recommend the 790Pro OR the 780XTX, both perform about equally, however, Minisforum is generally selling the UM790Pro for quite a bit less than the 780XTX.
@gtech66

The UM780 comes with a smaller power adapter and is currently $400 directly from Minisforum with a 2 year warranty. The AtomMan LED display is just another thing that will fail over time. The newer UM790 has problems with the front HDMI ports at 120k resolution. I got the UM780 barebones, added 32gb Corsair DDR5 RAM, and 2TB. Patriot P400 Nvme, running at 7000MB/s and I love it. I even replaced the tiger screen with the AMD logo.

Realistically how much more powerful is the dedicated Radeon RX 6600M in their top mini pc compared to the 780M onboard in this one? The price is approx £170 more for the 6600M but what does that get you?
@yissnakklives8866
@yissnakklives8866 4 ай бұрын
There is still a significant difference. I can't find a direct comparison but the 6600M trades blows with the 3060m and the 3050m is about ~20% faster, in general, than the 780m. Bear in mind that both of those have dedicated VRAM and each of those GPU's consume more power by themselves than the entire mini pc. As an example, I have tweaked my 680m in the Minisforum UM690S to hit: Cyberpunk 2077~55fps at 1080p medium quality and FSR2.1 set to balanced, No FSR gets 35fps. GTA V at 1440p medium ~80fps with no upscaling. Witcher 3 medium + FSR (no RT) balanced = 50fps, Hitman 2 medium quality, no upscale, 1080p = 45fps avg, Fallout 4 medium preset, 4k 55fps no upscale (!!!); Skyrim ultra preset 1440p no upscaling, 30fps; high preset 35fps; 1080p Ultra: 40fps, high 55fps

If the masses with crap desktop builds find out something like these exist, they might jump into them. I see a lot of $200-$300 chonky builds that take too much space. Yet their use case can probably be satisfied by a sub 200 dollar mini pc. The future is exciting. 😊

I have both and I can't tell the difference. If I switch the FPS indicator on in steam I get no more than 2 FPS difference on demanding games like enshrouded or cyberpunk. I would point out that the 790 Pro only goes up to 6 gig virtual memory in the bios whereas the 780XTX goes up to 16 gig although I have mine set at 8 gig(both are 32 gig of 5600 sodim's) The 780XTX Bios seems to be better developed than the 790Pro. Although I don't overclock, I think it would probably be easier on the 780XTX's Bios.

Avoid buying these kinds of mini PCs, the have proprietary non upgradeable hardware and overheat like crazy after a while. I ended up buying the Nova PC from MicroPowerPC. At least present PCs that are both affordable and justified for their prices. A mini PC that costs as much as a full size form factor with more options is not an option.

Why don't you rant then about much more "unaffordable and unjustified" Apple iPhones, watches, minis, etc., too? If this advanced non-cheap MiniPC is not for you exactly, doesn't make it any bad or plain unjustified for some others. They sell those in masses and reviews are very good overall. I myself own a much cheaper MinisForum PC with AMD APU and I like it so far.

Uses far less power, maybe you should look up just how much it costs to run a full size tower with a 750W psu per year then realise why these are so appealing. My old desktop just causes my portable power station to shut down as soon as you start doing anything & quotes 3 hours remaining on the display whereas my minipc can run for 2 days straight from it & I see no difference in performance.
@alexmoneni9196
@alexmoneni9196 5 ай бұрын
its a crappy mini pc. I bought one 2 days ago and after all setup and all time spend on it, I found out that it has power issues. After shutting the mini pc down it will not power on unless I unplug and re-plug the power cord and then it turns on. I even updated the bios to latest 1.05 and checked all setting but nothing worked. Had to send it back for refund. So the um780xtx is junk untrustworthy system. It seems from reviews that many minisforum mini pcs types have various problems. So I will not get close to any minisforum pcs ever. Also wanted to try beelink one but have read issues with their system as well. Also the acemagic family are infected and a no-no. So ti leaves few trustworthy brands. I am thinking of getting a paladin mini pc and hope for the best. By the way this is not the only unit I had issue with? I also have a um690 and that one had faulty bluetooth.

MiniPCs/Nettops are getting more and more popular nowadays for a reason. They hit the sweet spot for many home/office users and there're lots of different models available to choose from. They're in the same league or above as desktop AiO PCs while being cheaper and/or more versatile/powerful. Not everyone needs a bulky power-hungry desktop or a less versatile and less powerful stationary notebook with a small shitty monitor for the same price. Also, longevity depends on parts quality and thermal design, not the size itself. Apple sells its Minis since 2005, Intel did it too with their NUCs for 10 years, so still do HP, Dell, Fujitsu, Acer, ASRock/ASUS, Gigabyte, etc. Year, how "ridiculous"!
