While Leatherman has an extensive lineup of multi tools, the two I consider to be the best value are the Rebar and SuperTool 300. Price is just one area to consider when deciding on either of these multi tools. There is a lot to be said for compactness, weight, and features as well. Let's dive into these two multi tools.

Great video, I carry and use my Rebar most days at work and absolutely love it. I have been considering an upgrade to the ST300 as my daily work tool, the heavier duty pliers would definitely come in handy.

i chose rebar over wave mainly because of weight. it's more lightweight due to the simple design (even though i added scissors and a needle holder), and has stronger pliers (at least there was a difference when i bought mine). i had to reshape the awl to make any use of it but now it's 100% functional.

I have the Leatherman Super Tool that I got in the very early 1990’s, the Wave and the Surge. My two favorites are the Surge and the Super Tool as I have large hands and they fit better, but I love all three of them and they work great. I also had a Micro Tool which I received as a gift that was removed from my briefcase not long after 9/11 as I had forgotten that one of my students had placed it in there the night before I caught my flight.

Thanks for this comparison, those are two of the tools I was looking at. Not-so-fun-fact: In Germany, knives that can be opened with one hand AND have a locking mechanism are considered weapons and illegal to carry. Two-handed opening ones are tools (unless the policeman has slept badly or trouble with his wife....) Seeing both tools side by side, I think the Rebar is a better fit for my small hands. And my pockets - btw, not missing the clip, I'll make use of the lanyard ring and put it on a leash.

What a dumb law
@TheInchii
@TheInchii 7 ай бұрын
Actually it's a bit different, I was reading the blog about the knives and they asked the police what's up with this law and having multitool with 1h blade if this will also be considered as weapon. And they answered that thing is not about having it as if you have a reason to have it cause you will use it and can prove it there is no problem for example you go camping etc. but thing is about how you transport tool like this. If it will be for example in closed bag with zipper it's ok, it has to be transport in closed container so that you cannot grab it fast like for example from pocket or belt sheath. You can also transport it in a closed toolbox. But if you would have it in the car door for example you are busted. So you can have it but cannot have it somewhere easy to access. So out it in a sheath then out it in a bag or backpack with zipper and you are ok.

I’ve come to appreciate the long reach of a dedicated Philips #2 over the utility of a bit exchanger. I chiefly work in facilities maintenance and mainly on pools, spray parks, water features. I carry some other tools in my man purse that handle the jobs I used to use my Charge for.

The Rebar is my favourite Leatherman - I have three of them because I got a couple reduced to clear. It's almost a perfect size, weight and tool selection for me. The only thing I hardly ever use is the serrated blade. If you were making this video now, I guess you'd be including the Bond as well - most of the functionality of the Rebar for a lower price. One consideration in the Wave/Rebar comparison that you don't discuss is that the Rebar's knife blades have the cutting edge turned inwards towards the centre axis of the tool, and the Wave's has the cutting edge turned outwards. There are pros and cons to both options. Outward opening makes one-hand deployment easier, and flush cutting onto to a flat surface. But inward opening makes it pretty much impossible to close the blade on your fingers, if you have the plier handles closed.

Is the Bond the lightest full size tool I can put a pocket clip on? Do they sell it that way? Or should I look for an old Sideclip?
@stevefaiello3321
@stevefaiello3321 6 ай бұрын
@@michaelkulman7095 the Bond can accept a pocket clip, though it doesn't come with one from the factory. The Sideclip lacks the file and awl of the Bond, but if you're not going to use either, the thinner profile and lighter weight may be worth it. The Sideclip has a shorter knife too if that matters.
@michaelkulman7095

@stevefaiello3321 6 ай бұрын
@@michaelkulman7095 I'd say go for the Sideclip. I don't own one, but I do have a PST and a Bond and the PST is noticeably thinner due to its completely flat sides. The Sideclip is even thinner, so it's probably your best bet. I've contemplated picking one up, but my Skeletool does the job when I want to forget I have something in my pocket.
@michaelkulman7095
@michaelkulman7095 6 ай бұрын
@@stevefaiello3321 Thanks. I may do that. The PST still stands out in some ways. The PST was pretty efficient in terms of number of tools to weight and size, form factor and Sideclip maybe more so and comes with the clip of course. I'm not obsessed with locking tools, with the original design you get some safety by squeezing the handles together as opposed to a jackknife. The Skeletool is too stripped down for me. Some of the Juice models are pretty pocketable but I still think the PST and Sideclip filled a niche, hit a sweet spot in form factor, weight, size and tool load out. I've learned over the years I won't usually bother to thread a sheath on my belt unless I have some special reason so pocket clips or pocketability is the main thing. The bigger and bigger and more expensive models don't really appeal to me. I wish Leatherman had some inexpensive legacy models.

There's Rebar fans and then there's everybody else...lol. Great review. You are right about the pocket clip. Adding a pocket clip would increase the demand for the Rebar. One the plus side, the Rebar does fit ok in the 5th jean pocket. Another option is connecting a suspension clip to an a small niteize s-biner then connecting the s-biner to the lanyard. I do have plans to upgrade the cutters on the Rebar with the eod cutters based off your previous video. Thanks again 👍.

I must admit i do love the rebar for medium sized multitool! I got mine for a warranty replacement for a PST i sent in a few years back and its got the classic look to it? The bit extender i find jams on the screwdriver end so im not in favour of it! I use the Leatherman original bit extender that came with first generation wave. That one sandwiches between the pliers and fits in perfect. That also gives proper 1/4 drive too? I do have supertool 300 that was also a warranty replacement for a core i believe? Love it too! Like you and i guess most of the viewer's one Leatherman leads to many more? I dont buy Leatherman tools anymore though as i believe the models now are crap in design! Im thinking about the free as i write this!

For myself, if I had to choose between the two I would go with the Supertool 300. Mainly for the larger saw, file and serrated blade. I am a surge user so size obviously isn’t a factor for me. Good point on the Robertson bits. Pretty standard screw for us Canadians with Phillips being neck in neck for popularity. One thing I have noticed with Leatherman is their love of the slotted driver. There are nine between my Surge and the two bit kits lol.

Hi Ben, I have the Rebar, what I like on it is the simplicity of construction, the good size and the ease of clean, that I consider an important factor. The choice of tools is quite good. A huge reason I carry a Supertool over a Surge is that I do a lot of trench work (watermain construction) and use my multitool very often for things down in the water and mud. I carried a Wave for a while and I'll tell you the amount of sand and grit you can stuff in all those tight tolerances around the outside tools is incredible.. and the sound that thing makes when you open your knife blade past all that grit is cringe-worthy (the sound of small metal parts being sanded into a habdful of scrap!). The closed-handle architecture of the Supertool/Rebar/Bond is a huge selling point for me because it handles the dirt work a lot better, and it's much easier to rinse out. That being said, you don't need a very diverse tool set for water utility work either, at least in a multitool. Pliers and wire cutters for manipulating/stripping utility tracer wire, a file, and a fat screwdriver are basically it for me. So the simplicity of these toolsets are also very appealing in the sense that I don't really miss what I don't really need.

If you get an aftermarket sheath with a belt clip (such as the RAE gear ones) you can also clip it inside your pocket. That's how I've been carrying my rebar the last few weeks, on my left side with the lanyard loop to grab onto. It is really wide for a pocket clip but it hasn't inconvenienced me at all, in many cases it's preferable to having it on my belt, and both scenarios are way better than having it loose in my pocket.

I have been daydreaming about making myself a knifeless/bladeless ST300 by replacing the 2 blades with t-shank holders from the ST300-EOD. The only thing holding me back is the money to obtain 1 regular ST300 plus 2 EODs or the shank holders therefrom (none of these things is cheap).

My big issue with multitool is the driver. I need good plyers, cutters, straight edge knife that can be accessed from closed position, and a damn driver that takes regular 1/4" bits with a bit of length. If Leatherman would make a model with 1/4" exchangeable bit driver, magnetized for standard bits and stick it in any model with the easy access blade I would buy it for whatever they wanted. As it is I carry a Kershaw select fire and an old model 100 super tool mainly for the plyers and cutters. I was interested in the center drive but kinda hate otf plyers and don't love Gerber. I have been thinking of a skeletool cx with but extension and then either gluing a bitty magnet into the extension or buying some wiha bits, they apparently work with the locking system on the Leatherman extention. But man, 30$ for the extention is steep.

It is, but you may consider the Surge over the SuperTool 300 as it offers the same styling as your Wave. Big factors for me are the one hand outside accessible blades, scissors, and smooth plier handles. It is more expensive, but I feel it is worth the extra money.

Good evening Ben . I hope that you are fine . This is an off-topic comment . A couple of days ago I was asking you about a dual pen/pencil . I have found one but sadly (or at least where I am ) it is out of stock .The lamy cp1 twin pen version . If you can buy one , I hope that you will like it . God bless you
@txtoolcrib
@txtoolcrib 3 жыл бұрын
That actually looks quite nice. How does it work for dual functionality? I assume you either have to have the ink refill or the lead refill in at one time. So that you can use this for either a pen or a pencil, is that correct?

@@txtoolcrib Look Ben , I don't fully understand what you mean but if you mean that at a moment the pen is ,say, a mechanical pencil then you change its "internals" to make it an ink pen , the answer is NO . Although there are some pens like this but it isn't the case here , and this is what I like about this pen . Using a simple gear mechanism and by rotating the pen to your desired choice , the writing device becomes a pencil or a pen . Note that this design is used by many multicolor pencils .

I EDCed the ST300 for a long time. It’s three ounces more and considerably bulkier that the Rebar. I love the Rebar. I wish it didn’t have a hole in the file blade. Really could have done that differently. Like you, I went to the Surge. But if I had to choose, I’d go back the the ST300. I keep it on a pack now. I like the integrated tools design better for outdoors.

I think the pliers suck because the only reason why they're detachable is because the very first ones that Leatherman made were indestructible on there was nothing wrong with them at all so you're guaranteed to buy replacement carbide cutters on every one of these as to where the first one they're perfect

The sad thing about this video is the fact that both 300 and Rebar are not only the best bang for the buck but pretty much the ONLY Leathermans left that have a good value. Where I live the two of them are the only "real" MT by Leatherman for under 100€. The Wave used to as well but it did climb from 90€ a couple of years ago when I bought mine to over 140€.
