@Keav so here is an interesting one. I installed the water drop spotless and an integrated tds monitor. Upon installation I was baffled that my ppm was only reading 65ppm (filtered) vs 266ppm (unfiltered). At first I thought my integrated TDS monitor was at fault but I quickly dispelled that theory by testing the outlet water with a handheld monitor. It’s essentially the same reading as my integrated in line tds monitor. I then watched some videos of other KZfaqrs that had the CR spotless and even higher ppm (285 and 320) before filtration yet upon running their water through the CR spotless they were achieving 0ppm. So this led me to believe that the filter medium of the water drop spotless vs the CR spotless system is of different quality. I decided to test my theory and ordered two of the CR Spotless resin cartridge filters. I installed them this morning before washing my vehicle but immediately my integrated tds monitor reads 0ppm. So I have to believe the filter set up of the CR spotless is superior to the filters of the water drop cartridges. Just an FYI and could be useful to others that are coming up through the process. So in future I’ll be buying the CR filter cartridges as my replacement.
@CarsWithKeav
@CarsWithKeav Ай бұрын
In the video I cut open the Waterdrop filters and they for sure don’t have much resin in them and I show how to buy empty bulk cartridges and resin to fill yourself. Those would be the equivalent of the cr spotless cartridges. The flow you are running has a big impact as well if going full flow from a faucet it can overwhelm their smaller resin filters. Needs to be incoming flow of 2gpm or so. Hopefully my next video is converting a Waterdrop to be like a 20 inch cr spotless.

for putting the inline TDS meter so that you can measure real time TDS, i bought a garden hose (GHT) to 1/4 push quick connect combined with a brass T connector and then just put that where i needed
@CarsWithKeav
@CarsWithKeav 10 ай бұрын
That’s a great idea! Appreciate the info! You could also drill directly and tap the hole into the filter housing using a push connect with a screw in. That is exactly what CR spotless does. You can tell they did it themselves just by how it looks. They buy the housings then modify them. I like the adapter approach better as well. Since these are calibrated to measure moving water you can get calibration fluid and there is an adjustment screw on the back. It can react differently to PSI and flow changes.

DIW-20 I have gets close to 650 gallons when 1ppm kicks in and that’s with my 52 tds and county water. I can get maybe another 150 gallons before it hits 10ppm. CR spotless are designed and rated for up to 2.5gpm and I have run mine many times on a garden hose at 3gpm. The flow meter in this video is the same technology just my wall setup ones were designed to work with plumbing pipes and not a garden hose. On the do will do a little better as it can hold 10lbs of resin and tank style tend to be a bit more efficient. @CarsWithKeav
@CarsWithKeav 10 ай бұрын
It’s an industry standard housing size so they should fit. I only tested 2.0 GPM, but think it could do 2.5 just like the cr spotless. I think it could run an active. I should have tested that in the video just got so caught up in the 4 hour ppm watch-a-thon. I actually checked that in my next video on the new wall setup. It’s all plated brass and looks to be nickel plating. Passed the magnet test and thought it was stainless as it’s plated inside and out, but the long tube in the center I can see the coloring . I think brass on the elbows and copper on the long tube.

Responded to the other comment before seeing this reply. I think it’s a mix. The long tube might be copper and the elbows are brass. It is all looks to be nickel plated. Hi Keav. Great stuff here. I purchased this unit for DI and mounted it to my cart. Ideally I would like to use QDs with 3/4 NPTs for in and out to my Karcher cube so I can store the hoses on my cart when not in use. Would you recommend skipping the QDs to reduce the possibility for leaks? Secondly would it be better to not run through the pressure washer and just use the garden hose with the Water drop affixed to my cart for the final rinse?
@CarsWithKeav
@CarsWithKeav Ай бұрын
For convenience using the pressure washer while off works well, but deionized water is corrosive to open metals like brass and can leach metals from the internals of the pressure washer over time. I prefer myself to use it out of a garden hose just have to make sure you are not flowing too much water as it will not get cleaned enough to be spotless. I like using quick connects whenever I can on a mobile cart. If they are quality they won’t leak just have to make sure they have Teflon and torqued down good on the thread side.

@CarsWithKeav 4 ай бұрын
In order to get their stated life out of the product they use 1gpm. What I meant is the system itself is not restricting as some of these systems have restricters built in that limit flow. This one you need to dial the flow to make sure the filters have enough time. This would all depend on the water quality. Good water quality you could flow faster and the worse it gets you would need to dial back to give the filters more time. If you run the bulk filters I showed they would be able to handle the water better as you have 2 to 3 times more resin and surface area.

Nothing pre-filter wise to reduce tds just got lucky with where the city water is coming from. CR spotless would have much more capacity than this Waterdrop which would be less refills just more resin during each refill. I would say CR spotless would be close to 3 times the lifespan.

@@coolwrld302 Going to bulk resin canister like I did in the video is better. Water is a deciding factor as their stock filters are pretty good for lower tds 100 and under. @CarsWithKeav
@CarsWithKeav 4 ай бұрын
Spotless water is for sure not a cheap thing especially if you have hard water. The water quality could have you getting anywhere from 300 gallons to even less than 50 gallons. The harder the water the more you will spend replacing filters and resin. DI is the only way to get spotless water outside of a distiller. Now if your water is high in tds then reverse osmosis might be the best way coupled with a DI system. The RO system will last years and will get the water to very low tds then the DI system cleans up the rest. Problem is you would have to store and pump the water since RO is too slow to wash at the same time plus you get waster water that has to be disposed of or used in some other way.

168 is less than the national average for TDS. Hard is more defined as calcium rich. The chemicals and minerals in the water is what can really impact resin. I've just been trying to find anyone else who has done this on YOu TUbe but haven't been able to locate anyone as of yet whose tried it. I stopped by a detail store the other day and this is the way they create their DI water which they sell to car detailers who come by and pay to fill their tanks. They do however use a commercial RO system which runs about $8000 but I can't see why it wouldn't work with a standard residential RO unit. Only thing I can determine is they use a commercial RO because they need to produce a lot of water faster to sell to their customers. But for a guy doing a final rinse on his cars at home, I don't see why a residential RO system couldn't work, it just produces the RO water at a slower pace.@@CarsWithKeav

The refills with the canisters will always be better for spotless water. More resin surface area will clean faster and allow cleaning at a faster flow and way less times to refill. At least Two times less refills more than likely. In the end way cheaper. All higher end filter systems use the same type of filter cartridge with full bulk resin instead of the type the Waterdrop uses.

Is the bypass working when you try the different valves positions? Are the blue housings full of water? Did the filters come wrapped in plastic or anything like that? What's the purpose of making your own resin filter that cost 2x as much the cartridges?
@CarsWithKeav
@CarsWithKeav Ай бұрын
Not sure what you mean by twice as much. Most resin filled cartridges are around $90 for this size already full. The bulk setup costs about $75 and you don’t have to buy the cartridges again just refill them. If you are referring to the Waterdrop filters I explained in the video they don’t have much resin so they won’t clean as much. The bulk filters will be twice if not more capacity.
@rsi2493
@rsi2493 Ай бұрын
But didn't you pay $90 for the resin and $45 for the disposable cartridges and both yielded 0ppm? What am I missing. I think the disposable cartridges made 300 gal...maybe you mean the diy cartridges will produce more? Even if it produces almost double the di water isn't it most double the price?
@CarsWithKeav
@CarsWithKeav Ай бұрын
@@rsi2493 The disposable filters are what comes with the Waterdrop and are $45. The reusable bulk ones I made are only $12 a piece and the bag of resin was $50 which fills both for a total of $74 and next resin change it would be just the resin as you already have the refillable cartridges. The DIY hold at least twice as much resin if not more. So even if it was exactly twice as much you get twice the clean water and more resin which means you can turn the flow up a bit. I would pay the same money per gallon every time to not have to change filters twice as much. So the breakdown is $45 for Waterdrop filters at almost 300 gallons. $90 for cr spotless pre-filled cartridges or $75 for DIY filled cartridges which will both get around 600 gallons with my water. $.15 a gallon for stock filters. Cr spotless at $.15 a gallon as well. DIY gets $.12 a gallon. Remember though second fill you already have cartridges so the subsequent refills only cost $.08 a gallon.

@@rsi2493 The resin should be stored moist and sealed that will keep it from losing charge. If the filters are in an area that can be frozen most will drain the water and dump the filters or bulk resin into a bucket with a lid and put in an area that stays warmer.

@@CarsWithKeav 2 questions for you if you don't mind 1. They use chlorine + chloramine to clean my water in my area. Does this mean I should look into 3 GE filters (Chlorine, Chloramine, and Sediment) as a pre-treatment? What are your thoughts on this and how would you go about this? 2. What are the structural differences between running one of these spotless systems vs whole house systems. Can you not replace the filters in the whole house systems with a refillable one with resin and run it as a spotless system? Thanks in advance
@CarsWithKeav
@CarsWithKeav 6 ай бұрын
@@user-lj5wv2tt9d chlorine and chloramine blocker filters for sure. If it’s treated water might not need the sediment filter, but if you have room it always helps out. I try to use 1 micron filters. The systems from a cartridge perspective are all the same 2.5 x10 filters or 4.5 x 10. Spotless filter housing usually have some type of flow restriction to make sure the resin has time to filter. Whole house systems usually have less restriction to get more flow as they are designed for carbon, water softeners, sediments filters, etc. You can use a whole house system with resin cartridges just have to monitor the flow rate. Most 2.5 x10 filters should be limited to 2gpm max. Bigger housing such as 4.5x10 you can go up to 2.5 gpm or sometimes higher.

@@VincentNguyens RO system is probably the way to go and then pump that stored water through the Waterdrop to get it to absolute zero. That resin would last a very long time. @@VincentNguyens You only have to store enough to wash a car which could just be a 20 gallon trash can unless you are doing this for a detail business then you need to store a couple hundred probably. If you are storing ahead of time even a cheaper $200 RO system will do just fine. CR spotless will filter better and give you a little more time between refills. Jamie the cleaner runs a cr spotless and he has 400 to 500 tds, but has to refill once a month. One other option is to look into DI tank rental which will be much cheaper if somebody can deliver and pickup in your area. Check out Culligan see if they have a service near you.

@CarsWithKeav
@CarsWithKeav Ай бұрын
I’m a bit lucky with my TDS, but I have lots of chlorine that make the resin last like it’s 100 tds. Not much you can do to make the filters clean any better all you can do is have a bigger DI system so you have more resin which will allow you to run a higher flow rate and refill less often. In the end though you will still be buying the same amount of resin. If on city/county water running a pre-filter with a carbon filter will help reduce the chlorine which eats at the resin. I’m working on a video now that will take this Waterdrop and convert the housing to 20 inch and run my own bulk filters basically turning it into a cr spotless with an awesome bypass and when buying the 20 inch they come with manifolds so you can take the old 10 inch out them together and use them as carbon filters. If all works out should be done in a week.
