Excellent questions! Mineral consumption is largely through a balanced diet and food. So while you are correct that some of these minerals have health benefits, it is preferable to have purified water and you can remineralize it if you so desire, with mineral drops or other methods. For your second question, you are asking about filtering water through a pitcher, and then filtering it again through a second pitcher? Your question on micro plastics is a good one. These pitchers use BPA free construction. Also, the Clearly Filtered for example, uses medical grade Triton material with won’t leach microsolastic compounds into the drinking water.

The Waterdrop is a great pitcher! Fluoride in general is difficult to remove with any water filter pitcher. If you really want to remove fluoride you should use something like reverse osmosis or distillation.

You should write a review on the company's website. I bought an undersink filter system from them. They claimed it reduced flouride. I tested my water with test papers, and my flouride levels were consistent with tap water for flouride. Anyway, the company modified one of their filters in the system I have. It now removes 100% of the flouride. The company seems to be very responsive to customer input.

Interesting! Thanks for sharing about the under sink filter. Glad it is working well! I would just say that using paper test strips are not too accurate, and if the claim is that it “reduces” fluoride, the filter could be reducing it but a test strip is not ideal to measure it. You could be talking about the difference of a fraction of an mg/L.

@Freshnss I am well aware that a lab test is far more accurate than what papers ever could be. I work as a firefighter and am also a Haz-Mat technician. I have a pretty good background in chemistry and testing methods. With that said, I went to the Environmental Water Group's (EWG) website to see what was reported to be in my water. That is how I chose/modified my filter system. Anyway, I bought Waterdrop's TSA 3 system. It is a three filter system that connects inline to my faucet. My city has insanely high water pressure (about 90 psi), whereas most cities are probably 45-60 psi. This allowed me to switch two of the filters in my system out. I got rid of the first and last filters in my stock system. Waterdrop makes a couple of stand-alone filters that fit my system (RF-10 and RF-10 UF). I installed an RF 10 in place of my first filter and an RF-10 UF in place of the last filter. I made that change for a couple of reasons. It slows the water down through my filter system. My water now flows through around a gallon per minute (rated flow rate @ 60 psi), which gives my water more time with the filter media. Second, my water has low levels of PFAS in it. I have three carbon filters in series (2 carbon blocks and a granular activated carbon with an anion exchange for flouride removal). I am going by faith as TAP Score's PFAS test is very expensive and only tests for about 12 out of the 4000 PFAS. I feel comfortable my system can remove a vast majority of the stuff from my water. Based on my research, carbon filters are a great filter media for a lot of these chemicals and emerging toxins. I also believe the anion resin helps remove PFAS, and I read that the ultrafiltration media in my UF filter should remove large chain PFAS as well. The main thing is to know what is in your water. Second, buy a filter to remove the contaminants you want removed. The only contaminant my filter system did not reduce a whole lot was chromium. However, my water was about 0.6 part per billion from the EWG website, and that seemed about what my test paper showed. That definitely was not a definitive test, but it seemed fairly consistent with what was claimed by the EWG. So, I will take that. It is the only contaminant my system did not address, and that is higher than the EWG's recommended levels. My water tested negative for several nasty chemicals. All of these were not found in my water: Copper Flouride Chlorine Mercury Cyanuric Acid Nitrates Nitrates Bromine Carbonate Root Note: The only media in this system that can remove nitrates and nitrites is the anion resin for flouride removal, which is why I believe that can also assist in removing negatively charged PFAS. I saw a review online where a person stated he had insanely high nitrate levels (40 ppm) in his water, and the stock system brought it down to 0 ppm. If his system does that for awhile, the resin has a large capacity.

@@isaaccutlip5815 officially they say something like 40 gallons, personally a few months where I am. Also despite their insistence on replace at .006, you can wait longer too. Judge by your taste. If you can visually see loudy/dirty water if will be less. Buy double packs filter costs less than single. And I've seen zero coupons as well.

We haven't actually seen any studies indicating demineralized water causing vitamin deficiency. The oft-quoted WHO studies only mention that providing demineralized water in areas where nutrition is already lacking is not a good strategy.

It really depends on what else is in the water. Filtration media can lose is absorptive capabilities for some contaminants based on what else its absorbing from the water.

Yup. Most radon in water is going to be from the breakdown of naturally occurring uranium present in the earth. Some parts of the country have very high levels due to the types of bedrock there.

You are absolutely correct. The way you just described is how we are already planning to do future testing. We will also use distilled water for the initial flush. The way NSF tests is they will go to 2x times the rated capacity and they have spiked water to ensure consistent contaminants. It's not feasible to do at the KZfaq scale unfortunately as they get paid thousands of dollars to run those tests. We're trying to at least get some good data but there will be inconsistency between locations.

yes, and every-time we drink from the disposable plastic bottles we consume micro plastic. i believe plastic rating in the triangle on items has to be a 7 for it not to leach micro plastic particles. I use a stainless steel bottle and wash it daily.

Unfortunately they are already everywhere, including in our bodies. Studies have shown that some filters themselves can leach microplastics. It's inconclusive what effect they have on humans so far.

@@Freshnss As someone else wrote, it seems to me there must have been a mix up with the samples. The carbon filter of the Brita wouldn't be able to remove anywhere near that level of flouride (if any), and Zero Water to have removed none just doesn't fit with other testing.

Wash pitcher in soap and water once weekly. No soap through the filter itself!

Yup, this is the right advice. Most people don't wash their pitchers often enough. If you're really worried, you can sanitize with diluted bleach as well. At a minimum, washing the pitcher whenever your change your filters, but ideally every week or two.

The source water and concentration of contaminants will affect the final results so things can vary just from that alone. The more you have to begin with, the more drastic results you'll see. With small concentrations of contaminants you'll see more variability with a single test.

@@Freshnss the epic removes around 224 different contaminants, not all were listed in these tests. Arsenic and chromium reduction were why I bought the epic. But, I like them both since I run water through the water drop first, then the epic. The water tastes better doing it that way then just using one pitcher only. Great question! A pitcher likely won’t get rid of “all” the toxins, just due to limitations of a smaller form factor of pitcher filters. Have you tested your water to know exactly what is in it? Then we can find the best option to clean up your water.

Hey there! Do you have well water or city water? Rust is really the symptom of different factors. It would be ideal to test your water to understand the chemistry behind it, because in some scenarios you can have an issue with toxic heavy metals due to the corrosive water.

This is a common result of water with lower TDS after fine filtration. Some people are more sensitive to it. Filters that do less filtration won't remove as much and preserve more of the mouthfeel of water with higher TDS.

We lean towards the Clearly Filtered but you really can't go wrong with either.

Most water filters will remove chlorine to varying degrees. Because activated carbon does a good job removing chlorine, and most filter pitchers use some amount of carbon, they can remove up to 100% of chlorine.
