Best Way I Know How To Get Tires Off Rims FAST & EASY - Scrapping a Pile of Aluminium Rims

This one has been coming for awhile now, and I've been looking forward to it! Mostly because I have a new tool to make the job faster and more fun. This is the best way to remove tires from rims, assuming you're scrapping aluminum rims and not hoping to save the tires. The tires are definitely destroyed here! I also show what to do with the old tires, and how much you get for the scrap metal. I think that covers everything!

I realize I'm late and blades have come a long way in 5 years but the diablo 9" carbide thick metal blades on a decent corded Sawzall is where it's at. I scrap cars so I come across a ton of aluminum wheels. I cut down 214 of them Saturday which took just under 4 hours. Once you have the system down you can realistically remove 1 tire per minute. By far the fastest way there is. I average 50-60 wheels per blade before the retaining tangs break. (Tangs always break before the teeth wear/break)

I was going to scrap my aluminum rims with tire on them because I didn't want to pay a shop to remove them and don't have a sawzall yet. Then a fellow scrapper taught me how to remove them with soapy water and some hammers. Pour soapy water all around the bead then place the claw of a claw hammer and with another hammer pound the claw down on the bead all around the rim and it'll slip off fairly easily. Do that to both sides then simply pry it off really easily.

Let down the tire, remove the valve so all air exits. Get two wrecking bars (be sure to have two ends that are as flat as possible. Smash the tire as close as possible to the bead (caution - tire quality will dictate if the sledge hammer bounces back at you). Use the two wrecking bars as levers to pop ONE side of the tire over the rim. USE some kind of Liquid to lubricate the bead area, it will Help ALOT! No need for electric tools! Long ago use to fit truck tires and bob cat tires (I HATE BOB CAT tires)

Here’s what worked for me: 1. Break the bead on both sides by placing the end of a 3’ section of 4”x4” wood on top of the bead and back the rear driver side tire up the 4x4 until the bead drops loose. After the initial break, use your foot to push the bead down all the way around. Flip the tire and repeat. 2. Use a reciprocating saw (or other?) to cut through the side wall all the way around on each side. 3. Remove the tire tread off the rim by hand. 4. Pull the bead rings off the rim by hand. No cutting of the bead required.

Hey advice from a fellow scrapper. I cut from the inside edges where the bead seats on both sides then you don't have to cut the tire all the way through. It also doesn't break the bead loose. I can usually get one cleaned and loaded every 5 min and maybe go through a blade every 10 or so rims. Hope this helps someone have an easier day.

Now, I can collect these. Sad part we have to pay $4 each to dispose of them here in Illinois. However, the over all return will still come out ahead. It's a win/ lose. But now I can make it work. New IDEA below. Love the video. Helping a friend - who is a scrapper. Found rim with tire - he explained cost/effort. NEW IDEA: Cut the sidewall off the tire - parallel to the rim. Sort of like cutting the center out of the a donut. So make two (2) rings -- 1. the tire off the rim 2. the bead and the sidewall on the rim. Might save some saw blades this way. Might take more time. Often tire just come apart this way. You see them on the roadside. I cannot test this idea. I don't scrap tires and rims at all. Friend might try, get back to you either way. BTW, I do electronics, but not on this youtube account.

That was badass man, seriously, The going to the dump and then the recyclers and including how much you made was excellent. So many people do not include everything you want from a video. this was excellent. i don't have a bolt cutter, looks like i don't need one for this though , didn't seem to be a preferred tool for the job. i am not going to be getting any dough for this BS job here though, these wheels are steel and I have to save them for a new tire. Looks like your method of giant screw drivers to hold teh bed up for sutting will have to be the way I roll unless ," like you were asking about" I find some easier way to do this job. after watching you do this and get paid though makes me want top start collecting POS wheels from folks. I will have my eye out. OH! did you weigh your scrap first? i did the last two times I took stuff in and the sorry ass sob's robbed me on both accounts, it was two different scrap yards also and one stole over 40.00 the other about 28.00 from me. I only have one other place to try. I called them on both those scams and they threw me out rather than admit to the "Mistake" You might think I weighed in wrong but I have an old school Digital fairbanks scale that is powered by 6 D cell batteries and it is accurate to the 10th of an OZ. they didn't throw me out because I was violent, they threw me out because I broke out my scales to show them and they F'ing knew they would be screwed in the argument. wow though, nice haul. it would be a rad answer to unemployment if I could do what you just did everyday.

I'm going to say the bolt cutters are best for cutting the bead, or at least the cleanest. I wasted some clothing using the grinder/cutter, as melting rubber dust shot all over. Not only that, but the toxic smoke was a choking scene, that probably erased years of my life expectancy. Also, it saves damaging the rims, in case you clean and sell them for re-use. So; *Reciprocating Saw, and large Bolt Cutters* (or friend with a tire machine)

Why do it the hard way? I work in a scrap yard and have cut off hundreds if not thousands of tires off of alloy wheels. No need to let the air out either. Use a Stihl gas cutoff saw with a metal blade. I can do about 50 an hour or so. We have tried numerous methods and it's the best way. Trust me it works. I could have removed 10 in the time it's takes you to do one.

Just skip the sawing, split the tyre from the side 1/3- 1/4 of the tyre lenght with a old kitchen knife. Angle grind from the side untill you feel a pop when the bead brakes, slit it from the split to the grind spot and wheel will fall through. 20-30 rims in hour... Sharpening the knife with angle grinder for every other tyre and it will cut like butter

The purchase of an old coats 40/40 tire machine ($200) on Craigslist is much better than a package of sawzal blades every time you want to do your tires and rims and when your friend's find out you have a tire machine you'll make more money than with just scrapping. I've been doing it for 20 years.

Yeah, I’ve been thinking about it. Of course lots of people don’t have that startup cash right away, but it would pay itself off quickly. Is that the type that you can balance a tire as well? Cuz if so, I could definitely see a reliable little side-income there!

Why would you put lead weights in the battery pile.. I get $0.50 american for lead and only $0.28 for batteries.. just a general question no hate.
@thubprint
@thubprint 7 жыл бұрын
+Madden_Mobile I didn't think of that! I always have such a small pile of lead, I just bring them in together. That makes more sense though, thx!

looks pretty quick to me! here in the uk we have to pay to dump our tyres, even if its at our local rubish tip, i think about £2 each to dump them!!
@thubprint

+Re-cyclops that kind of sucks, that would cut my profit down by £26!

$6 / tire at regular tire shop. $2 / tire at Super Walmart tire shop. Local dump won't take them.

... and proper tire irons are super cheap at the harbor freight outlets.. I like a long 2x4 + small 2x4 setup using my boat trailer as the fulcrum to pop beads off the HF irons do the rest.

Its funny how people sit here thinking that scrapping rims are making money... i know countless tire shops that will pay more for them than a scrap yard ALWAYS, and selling them online local also makes more. Ive sold rims no less than $100 a set, $300 for a set of escalade rims, single bmw rims for $75, spares for $50-100. You just destroyed those rims, aswell as $3 worth of a saw blade to make 40-60cents a pound, probably not even $50. DONT FORGET PEOPLE BUY WHEELS WITH RUBBER SECOND HAND ASWELL DUH GUYS do yourself a favor and dont be this guy. Sell local and dont waste money, time and effort for something that someone else can get use out of for more.

I'm pretty sure there is no easier way then that. I mean you could burn the tires. that wouldn't require much work, but that's frowned upon here in the USA. but I would the rubber would melt on the rim making it dirty aluminum.
